Nikon D750 & D780

Has anyone used both the Nikon 24-120mm f4 and Sigma 24-105mm F4 Art on the D750 (or D610/D600 I guess) and has an unbiased opinion on them?
This might help.

I think most people who have used the Sigma talks about the centre sharpness being better than the Nikon 24-120 F4 VR and is also supported here with the test results.

It also has better VR. Its corner performance only shows promise from F8. I was seriously considering this one for my D600/D610, but after doing some reading and looking at my needs, I settled with the 24-85 VR.

I personally think that comparing these walk around or general purpose zooms should be done on specific parameters one is looking for. If one is using these for travelling and just general casual shooting, it will be hard to find any difference. People using these for landscape will not shoot anything under F8 and all these lenses are pretty similar in F8-F22 range.

You might have an edge with sharpness going with the Sigma and 1 stop better VC. This is one Sigma lens that does not get too much love and its thunder is stolen by the Tamron 24-70 2.8 even though you loose reach, but you gain one stop of light, the point here is most other Art lenses have much wider apertures where they shine. The 24-120 at F4 doesn't offer much other than sharpness to differentiate against competition.

Sadly I have never used the Sigma, it does get pretty good reviews. Its bigger and heavier than the Nikon. Its atually heavier than the Tamron 24-70 too.

Looking at reviews the opinions are pretty split!

I spent ages trying to figure out what I wanted and the Peak Design Slide seems to fit the bill. I will report back once I get a chance to give it an extended run upon arrival.

So I'm thinking if the Tamron 24-70 stays with me I might upgrade my 50mm f1.8g to one of the Tamron Primes if they fall in price!

I think its been sorted.

Im using my BR for time being as it works with my QR plate - I know you can get one for the Peak Design strap at additional cost.

Having sold my D610 a few weeks back, I've held back from ordering a D750 as I'm now on holiday in Fuerteventura until Monday and if I had it I would have wanted to bring it with me on holiday.
The temptation was too much as I ordered the D750 with 24-120mm kit lens, l'm not sure if I'll use the lens much as I have the 24-70mm and 70-200mm but at an extra £389.00 for the lens I got it to use as a walkabout lens.
I ordered the camera from Panamoz this morning and it will be delivered on Monday (I get home early Monday morning) now I can't wait to get home.

I just ordered the same kit from Panamoz on Monday (can't go wrong at £370 for the lens)....delivery should have been today but a clearance delay in Paris means it should now arrive tomorrow. The refresh button on the Fedex tracking page is getting a hammering at the moment!! :) I also ordered a Tamron 15-30 from Amazon Germany at the same time and that arrived yesterday.....just need a camera to use it on now! :)

Came across my first problem with my camera today! Was trying to take a shot of partners horse back lit from the early sunrise and it wouldn't focus once, changed to my d610 and focused first time every time..... Hopefully it's a 1 off but going to try it again tomorrow and maybe get a light to back light a person and see if it causes the same problem! Would this be camera error or lens?

I bet you can't wait, the 15-30 is a great lens, my 1st image with the D750 will probably be with my 14-24mm you've got to love wide.

I've had a similar issue. 99% it's fine but the odd time it struggles. The outer points are pretty useless in anything other than optimal conditions but the more sensitive centre spot is usually the one i need to get the focus locked on.

Having a D7k also, i would echo your findings with the 39 point AF system.

That sounds bit odd as the D750 have arguably the best AF module of Nikon so far (other than D4s) and the scene described does not seem like challenging.

as for the outer points, I never had any issues with D610 although I never stressed it in low light much with outer points. This is one are where Canon 5D MKIII has an edge with more cross type AF points on the outer zone and DPreview has demonstrated this very well in their D750 review.

I guess Nikon is up to something on AF for the next gen FX cameras.

My shipment is showing 'In transit' in Kowloon bay. Not sure how long it would take to reach me. Any guesses or experience on delivery turnaround from Panamoz.

Mine arrived in rural France at lunchtime today after being ordered early Monday morning (which included a delay of nearly a day in Paris for customs clearance)! It's my second dealing with Panamoz and I would say from ordering to delivery in Europe should realistically be 3 to 4 days....not bad from the other side of the world!!

It is showing 19th as tentative delivery. Wish I ordered it a couple of days early for weekend.

After reading this i had a try today shooting my daughter with the sun shining thought her, with my 85 @1.4 it really did struggle and when it did lock and take the picture it was a mess, out of focus and i guess down to the lens a real lack of any contrast.
If I've still got it will post it later when i upload them to the computer.

To be fair I've always had an issue trying to recreate these images with the flare shine through people.d700/and d800e also.

I think many bodies could struggle depending on how much the backlight is destroying the contrast of the scene.

haha to be fair it was extreme today when i tried

I've found the AF on the d750 to have released an new life into my 85 again. I always had slight issues with it on both my d800s at 1.4, neither seemed to give consistent results. where as I've had issues with my sigma 35,i can't get consistent results on it at anything over 5m. lots of out of focus shots where ever i set the af adjustment. Think i need to finally up it on the dock and have a play.

Lack of cross type outer AF points is arguably the D750's biggest 'flaw' IMO. The outer ones can struggle in less than perfect conditions and are noticeably less sharp some of the time.

That's interesting you say this, I've found mine behaves a bit oddly on my d750, yet on the d610 it seems spot on out of the box. Seems to drift a bit and shots can be slightly out. I'm going to try put it through its paces next month or so and if the problem persists they will go back for calibration. You just know when something isn't behaving as it should.

It would be nice to have them but tbh they aren't that bad ime and I'm constantly shooting moving subjects in poor light (way less than perfect conditions) with fast 1.4 primes @ 1.4.

Well no they're not that bad and I use them a lot for sports using single point CAF in portrait orientation, but it would of course be nice if they were cross type and even better if they were as sharp/accurate as the centre one :p

I do wonder why Nikon choose not to/can't put cross type on the outer points when that other brand can. Tbh even my Sony had cross type on the outer ones  ;)

Nukon seems stuck in the old days with there af system and points its the same 51point system from 3/4 grn back just tweeked to make it better. Yes its improved a lot but its not pushed the boundaries. Lets hope fpr nikon 1 type af across the board.

Isn't it amazing that we can 'complain' of such minor imperfections these days? ;)

I just find it a bit odd that top brands can't implement things that other brands have been doing for a while that's all. Don't get me started on Canon and their well below par DR ;)

Im must say I do like the simplicity of the nikon system. I couldn't be done with canons 101 different settings for every scenario. The rumour posted for the d5 had something like 108 af points maybe nikon have been holding back until it's perfected.
Then maybe we woukd have the top sensors and af ;)

Overall I have been mightily impressed with the Nikon system over my old canon. The files just seem so much better to work with and prefer the colour / tones. I haven't experienced an issue with the outer focus points, they're still far better than the old 5D2 I replaced it with and I managed to get by most of the time using the central point with that as the others were pretty useless.

I was looking at those glass screen covers. Seems there are 2 options. Maxsimofoto and GGS. Anyone used either and can comment on best fit?

Nikon used to have screen covers - had one for 7100 - which actually the second one fits the 750!! Check out Nikon site

Screen covers don't work so well when your screen is a flippy thing though

Nice pics! My D750 is heading to Nikon, I hope it come back quickly.

My D750 from Panamoz has turned up in Liege Euro hub of TNT as per the tracking info. Hoping to have it delivered tomorrow
