Nikon D750 & D780

Thanks got it sorted.
Out the just now with the kids so I can have a little play, exposure is very different to my d800. Seems to under expose/ make everything darker in matrix mode. Will see if its just the rear screen or tge files when home.
Will take some time getting used to this camera but overall very happy.
Check the histogram that will tell you ;)

Pondering macro next, I'm pretty much down to the Tamron 90 VC or the Sigma 105. I think the 90 is supposed to be sharper (on dxo) but that's not everything so I thought I'd ask

I have the sigma 105mm OS and can't fault it tbh. Tamron is 2 marks sharper on the D750 according to DXO though. I went for the extra working distance as I very much doubt I'd see the difference in sharpness, there's soooo much more to getting a sharp macro shot that it comes down to the user more than anything else IMO.

The Sigma is supposedly better by all accounts but I have the older non vc version of the Tamron and can't fault it all. It's easily one of the sharpest bits of glass I have used as you would expect the a.f is ridiculously slow. But with macro it's not really an issue.

Guys, don't get too hung up on DXO in the real world it's virtually impossible to tell two images apart unless you get the loupe out.

Yep, as I said far more of the sharpness is down to the user when it comes to macro compared with other types of photography IMO (not that that's not true of all photography ;))

Very true - I only looked at DxO to get a base point (BTW I had the Nikkor in on mine, but it was like a mini flashback on the link ;)), figuring every little helps.
My style such as it is is handheld and natural light as I never got to grips with flash - well except on the MP-E, but thats a different beast all together, so I have to consider AF and to a lesser extent VC\OS\whatever, that said on the Canon I did ditch the IS'd L lens for the non-L and was perfectly happy with that.

Tamrons certainly tempting - £287 (£302 after conversion tax) from Amazon in Germany, which seems pretty good - I forget how anal Tamron are about UK vs EU though

Not anal at all and even honour the 5-year extended warranty. It's Sigma that don't honour extended warranties, although they still honour the first 12m. Actually that's not true per se, after the first year sigma extended warranties are honoured but have to sent back to country of origin.

I never use AF for macro, just set it to 1:1 and then move myself back and forth to get the focus.

Job done...
Thanks for that - thats my birthday present problem solved

I've tried and have manually focused (tried it today actually with the Raynox), easy on MFT with a really good live view system with peaking and fine on DLSR, if the subjects static so you can zoom right in, but with my failing eyesight, diopiter to the max and I hate wearing glasses manual with the viewfinder isn't the best combo ;)

Any thoughts on third party batteries? After a couple of spares to keep in the bag

I use this and it's flawless on the D750

You can of course buy that little IR remote (which I did) but it costs as much as the shutter release I've just linked and you can't use continuous release with it, which is a pain for me when I'm doing bracketed shots.

thank thats ideal, really looking for something that i can use with continuos also so i can do bracketed or star trails. the range on the wireless looks useful also.

I usually use Expro and they're very good, however they let me down on delivery (basically they didn't send it) so I ended up with some Fosmon this time (link) as I needed to get them next day and so far so good.

I have three of the Fosmon and for me they are operating the same as the EXpro batteries ( I had the Fosmon's free with my old D7100 ). The EXpro I have used in the past have all been excellent and no different to the originals IMO.

I'd never heard of them before I got them (well ten mins before during a rapid research)

I have orded the Sigma today and another 50mm 1.8g so some new toys to play with next week. I just hope I can manage the weight of the Sigma until I have my shoulder and elbow operations.

Cool - did you favour the Sigma for the weight, or did you find it cheap somewhere?

Same for me, never heard of them. I have been using the EXpro for a few years on the Fuji's, due to recomendations on here and they have been faultless for me as the Fosmons are now.

I have gone of what other people have used and recomended and I though the extra 15mm maybe useful. The Sigma seems to be popular for FF and theres more user reviews around than the Tamron. I think all Macro lenses are good and sharpe for any brand in general.

b****r. I lost my Nikon remote last week and ordered the same of Amazon....bloody annoying it doesn't do continuous release, might order one of these and use the Nikon as backup.

Cheers.

Loosing kit is never fun - my problem is I keep finding things - mostly accessories from old systems...

Anyway a question for you guys - I was (and sort of still am) considering the 35mm 1.8G, price doesn't seem too bad, but I do have a semi specific function in mind and I want to know if its likely to be the right choice or not - its the Christmas day shots, the pressie opening, that sort of thing, so in close(ish) with in awful lighting (I don't use flash much but really wouldn't want to compete with the tree, plus when I do use it I really really suck), scale wise the rooms not that big, maybe 3.5m x 4m - here are a few pics to give an idea of scale (link), plus I loose the best part of a meter for the tree\pressies etc.

I'll need fast to combat the light (a very early December morning, probably with dim blub light) and short for the room.

So what would you chaps suggest?
