Nikon D750 & D780

After my failed attempt the other week, I thought I'd edit what i have before my road trip tomorrow.

I have had the 35mm f1.4g on loan for a bit now and I so wanted to love it. In actual fact i have been trying to force myself in to living the 35mm focal length for a while but it's just not working!

I'm not sure if it's the way I use the lens, what I use it for or I just need to accept it's not a focal length for me!

Anyone struggle with certain lenses?

Not sure how you will compare them, but here it is on the camera for scale. Check out the small and nimble 'nifty' fifty. :D

I won't really be using it on camera so size doesn't matter (in this instance at least anyway!).

My 35 1.4G is probably my most used, favourite every day lens. For general people snaps the FL is ideal. How long have you given it? When I first started to use primes I did persevere and used the 35 exclusively for months which certainly helps you to 'see' in the FL. It helped me immensely understand this aspect.

I recently went away for the week and took only the 24-70 and realised how I have got used to seeing in those FL's, my default is 35.

The FL that I'd say I'm least comfortable is 24 and below. Distortion kicks in with people up close and at times I find that a challenge. If people are your thing, persevere with the 35 but if it's not you, then I'd chop it in for at least the 1.8 version - I wouldn't want all that money tied up in an expensive prime.

I might be trying to hard, I dont know.

Wanted it for all round - people, landscapes, portraits (people and horses) but prehaps I'm using it all wrong! I was trying to get some half body shots but felt quite close to the subjects which I felt made them slighty uncomfortable.

I think I felt more comfortable with the 50, maybe its just an easier focal length to work with and I need to try harder with a 35.

Or maybe I just need to realise that different focal lengths work for different people!

35-50 are perfect for getting in close. Depends whether the people you mention were primed for the shots or candid? The FL's are ideal for having report between you and them; for a half body shot should work fine.

I think I am going to stick with my 50 rather than investing in the 35 I have had on loan. Its a lot of ££ to invest in a lens I am not 100% sure about. Thank you for your input though, its always helpful and useful to get users thouhts and opinions!

Didn't you have a zoom with that FL anyway? I do like my little 50 1.8G, very handy to have.

I have a 24-120 F4 & 70-200 F4 so got pretty much everything covered, but just want a prime for walk about to cover pretty much anything when I want to leave the zooms at home!

I was considering using the 35mm instead of the 24-120mm to cover the 24-70 focal range, and just have a 35mm/70-200mm combo, but thinking I would be losing a lot of focal lengths.

If you're not sure, best stick with a zoom. I made myself learn the FL as many of the wedding snappers I admire swear by it, I just needed to learn it properly.

I think its definantly a personal preference - I have been looking at some truely stunning wedding shots taken just with a 35mm, and then some equally as good ones with just a 50mm.

I think the 35 should go to a home where it will get lots of use - its an expensive bit of glass just to sit a round a lot!

It's strange isn't it, the thought of restricting myself to a prime is a 'scary' thought and I don't know if I'd manage. However, when I think back I grew up with film 'compacts' that just had a 35mm lens and knew no different and managed with that. They were the ultimate P&S, no zoom, no focussing, just look through the rangefinder window, point it in the general direction and hope for the best

My first proper camera was a tiny little IXUS with 3x zoom lol. Found it in my draw the other day!!

I think I will play it safe for now, keep the 24-120mm and try get the 50mm attached as much as possible.

I would like to give the 35mm more time, but he needs to sell it and I'm not prepeared to gamble that much money on a lens that might not work out for me!!

Just use the 24-120mm and restrict yourself to using it at 35mm or 50mm and see how you get on. If you start to like the focal length then maybe look into the prime. I just wish I had the time more to get out and shoot different things and experiment a bit more, I'd definitely be more inclined to try the single FL approach then.

I still have a 50mm, it was too small light and cheap to give up! I just need to use it!
