Nikon D700 official owners/users thread, anything related to the D700

I'm coming from DX format with plenty of lenses but at the moment I've only got the following that are suitable for FX-
Nikon 50mm f1.8
Nikon 70-300mm VR
Tamron 150-600mm

Could do with a good walkabout Zoom, any suggestions?
I will also be keeping my D7000 so I'm hoping to have the best of both worlds.

I think budget and requirements dictate that i'm afraid :) How wide do you want, how much do you want to spend and do you need a constant 2.8? :)

The options that get thrown around on here are:

Nikon 35-70 f2.8 £200-250 s/h
Tamron 28-75 f2.8 £200ish s/h
Nikon 24-85 f3.5-4.5 VR £400 new, not sure s/h
Nikon 28-70 f2.8 £600-ish s/h
Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC £750 new
Nikon 24-120 f4 VR £750 new, £600 ish s/h
Nikon 24-70 f2.8 £1200ish new, £800ish s/h

There's plenty more but these seem to be the ones that get mentioned.

That above tends to be the price order too give or take, some are close. Some are second hand etc so it's a tough one to put properly in order. I personally have the 35-70 2.8 which is a good lens by many means, just not particularly wide which was fine for me at the time as I have a 19-35 too albeit the quality of that is lacking a little. It's been a good lens but doesn't get used much after picking up an 85 and a 35. One day it might get replaced but it's perfect for me at the moment :)

I'll pitch another vote in for the Nikon 35-70 F2.8 AFD, I've got the Nikon 24-70 F2.8 as well but i prefer the older lens for just about everything, there's certainly not £800 of optical difference between them thats for sure!

The 35-70 F2.8 is a cracking lens, up to £300 depending on condition

Or for value for money the 28-105 f3.5 / f4.5 D IF is going to be lighter, offer a greater range and should be £100 - £150 used, an absolute bargain for the quality of images it can produce.

My D700 arrived this week but with it being dark when I have arrived home from work I've not really been able to give it a go until the weekend, and not really the best weekend to try it out either. It is in excellent condition and only 11k on the count, very pleased.
From what I have seen so far the results are superb. I have a D7000 and was hoping the D700 would be a better option at this time of year due its better high ISO capabilities that I have read about. The D7000 is very good at lower ISOs but at ISO 200 the D700 is in a different league altogether, files are so clean its astonishing.
At high ISO and heavily cropped the files are also superior to my D7000, which I have to do less cropping on, obviously, due to it having a 1.5x crop already. That is something I wasn't really expecting with the D700 also having a lower resolution sensor.
One from late Friday afternoon in a fairly darkish wood ISO 3200 Tamron 150-600mm (wouldn't have even attempted this with D7000). What little noise there was in the image was easily cleaned up in ACR.

Given my D700 is nearly 7 years old, I'd say it definitely still holds its own against the D750 apart from pixel count and maybe 1-2 stop improvement in high ISO image quality. I'm quite happy to have one of each for weddings, for now.

Just got myself a second hand D700 - was a DX user for ages (D70s, D90 and D7100) but wanted to go FX for a while now. So looking forward to having a proper play with it.

Any suggestions on a good walkabout lens for it?
I have a 90mm macro, 50mm 1.4 70-200 and a 10 - 20mm.
My current walkabout lens is a 17-50 but is only a DX.

The Tamron is a good lens, another cheap one is the 28-105afd, heard works well with d700.

Bought one to try with my D90 and am happy with it.

I had a 28-105 and it is a great lens with a really useful macro function BUT it suffers from terrible flare so I sold it in the end.

Im more inclined to go for a shorter zoom as i already have th 70 - 200 range covered
So something like the tamron 28-75, Nikon 24-70 (bit out of my price range atm)

What sort of money are you hoping to spend? :) I put a list of the usual suspects towards the top of this page :)

Not to sure at the moment as i need to sale soem bits n bobs to free up some money before i can confirm - so bit like catch 22

That's fair enough :) thing to remember is that you can spend what you want, there's choices for every pocket :)

Pleased to find this forum as have just bought a second-hand D700 - moving up from DX (D7000, which I'm keeping as second camera). Have the 70-300 VR from my DX days and am torn between the Sigma Art 24-105 and the Nikon 24-120 as my walkabout lens - my pics vary from landscape/cityscape to modern architecture and abstract. Keeping my eyes open on the classifieds here as would rather buy second-hand decent glass than new stuff with less IQ. Also thinking about the Sigma Art 35 + 50 primes. Anyway, haven't been out much with the D700 yet but looking forward to getting to know it.

Welcome to the club Carol.
I love my D700. I know it's a (relatively) old camera now, but there is something about it. "Only" 12 MPX is fine for most of the portraits I do.
Can't help on the zooms I'm afraid, as I have gone down the prime route now. The only zoom I have left is the Nikon 80-200 f2.8 which is awesome, even if I rarely use it!
Quite heavy for a walkabout though.
Another zoom I used to have is the old 35-70 f2.8 D Nikon lens. Very sharp indeed, less distortion than the 24-70, and has a macro setting too. Cheap if you can find one.
The Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art is simply awesome on the D700, it's the next lens I'm getting for sure.
Anyway, enjoy your D700.
Cheers,
Gary.

Thanks for the welcome Gary. 24-120 is now purchased (secondhand from MPB) and am using it as my walkabout lens whilst I find out exactly what I'm doing. I've heard good reviews of the Sigma 35mm f 1.4 Art so may well be the next purchase.
Cheers

Carol

How is your combo doing @Carol S ?
Are you settling in yet?

What are you paying for the D700?

And I have the 85mm f1.8D and can vouch it's a superb lens.

Depends on the type of portraits, 85mm doesnt work for everything.

470 with mbd10grip and 2 batteries

Cheers guys
Good price.
How many shutter actuations?

Not being nosey, I'm going Fuji so will be selling my D700 (13000 clicks), 50me f1.8d, the afore mentioned 85mm, 80-200 f2.8, 35-70 f2.8 and battery grip.

I have been using a D700 for a few years.. my go to lens is the Nikon 35mm f/2, this stays on my camera 95% of the time.. only other lenses I own are the 85mm f/1.8 and a cheapy Cosina 19-35mm for anything wide and architectural..

Its only on 36k has a. Little wear which I can live with camera are meant to be used in my eyes.

I had a year and abit with Fuji xt1 set up and loved it but when I was laid off I had to sell it just kept the x100s and conversion lens

Hope you like it Mrbaker.

Only selling my kit due to weight and age. Weight of gear and my age

You will love the d700, I got one mainly for family stuff but I've used it for birds too, I think it's fantastic.
Can't decide whether to sell my 50mm and 24mm and get a 24-120 f4 to cover family use.

Well, it wasn't the plan but I appeared to have just bought a D700 on the forum - arrives next week..........tic, toc............(-:

I love my D700, even though I keep saying it !
When I got my D750 I couldn't bring myself to get rid of it. It just works so well, and gives "nicer" results with a couple of my lenses when compared to the 750.
Maybe it's the bigger pixels, I don't know.
I know it's staying though.
Enjoy your new camera.
