thanks for the link! that's very helpful. yeah looking for an allrounder lens for the moment. but allrounder lens means gotta sacrifice the IQ. so im still thinking. will the £700 be worth it? :D

Those that use it, and I'm talking about some fussy buggers ! Reckon IQ is good enough. Sure its an all rounder, bound to be compromise somewhere but good value.

Nice! Small world, I live 5 minutes from there.
Ive just bought a sigma 12-24 specifcly to shoot in the Cathedral. Ive lived here 24 years and never shot inside it before!

Cant wait until I can get out and start shooting.

Thank you for your nice comment, Tom.

It's a small world. A close friend that I met through another forum and also a forum member here, also lives near there too and when my wife and I went to the UK we joined up with him and his wife for a number of days and we toured the area with them. We spent 5 days around the Gloucestershire area visiting Bath, Lacock, Broadway, Slimbridge's bird reserve etc. We also met up with them when we went to Paris 4.5 years ago and spent a few days with them there.

Hi Tom (and Lance ;))

I'm the friend Lance mentions, if you're ever interested in doing any photo shoots, I'm always up for that!

PM me if interested.

Cheers

Certainly will be when Im able to. Im still a bit fragile, so could do with some "backup" for the night shoots I have planned!

Last time I went to the docks at night, I got chased by a gang and saved a man from topping himself. Was an eventful night!

Yeah a couple, they werent all that though. I salvaged a couple the other day when I was going through all my old pics.

I've just managed to land myself a 24-70 AF-S, so I'm keen to check out the benefits of this commonly praised 'dream partnership' and have a good play...

Im sure you wont be disappointed!

24-70mm is a great lens, I had one for a while in team with a D3x.....cracking partnership... then a D700 stilll good..had to sell though due to financials! but back looking again now.....dont tell the wife!

I have the 28-300 running on a D3/D3s. It's brilliant and will be just as brilliant on the D700.

need some help :)
just recieved my new secondhand d700. but when you press the shutter release it open then takes 4-5 seconds to close and take the picture(theres a shutter lag)
the dials are set to s and apiture prioraty, and it still does this when the shutter speed it 1/60 or more.
anyone have any ideas, ive tryed the two button reset, but that didnt help either.
another thing when in live view i cant get it to focus as soon as i slightly push the shutter release it take a photo even when not focused

thats of,mirror up is off.its reset to standard settings and still does it with my last one when you had it on Ch it sounded like a machine gun.this sounds nothing like that
it clicks when you release the shutter then clicks 4-5 seconds after as if it was on a realy low shutter speed, though its not

Check the custom setting in the menu. CSM d9; exposure delay mode

And just to double check, this mirror delay problem, you are definately not in Live view.

That could be the answer!

(I'm hoping it is something simple as I was the one who sold him the camera!)

Cool, glad its fixed.

NR normal and i use it up to 6400iso with the occasional need to turn to b&w for better effect if its quite noisy.

Great. An actual owner. How's the image quality though? I know its an allrounder lens and I can't expect it to be as good as those pro lenses NIKON produce. Even the 24-120 f4 is more expensive than this lens.

And I have a question. Is there any way I van turn up the brightness of my focus points on my d700? My eyes are hunting here and there when it comes to night time. Seems the focus point is a bit dim.

Not sure if it would help but have you tried the DK-17M

It magnifies the view in the viewfinder - maybe that may help them stand out if not be slightly larger.. I've one fitted to my D700, but I cant remember what it looks like without it tbh :$

:suspect: Not saying it will be brighter thou - its just a suggestion..

DK17M is a brilliant bit of kit. You get a much larger view of what you are looking at. It's like watching a large TV in the dark when you look through the view finder and then with the DK17M someone has swapped the TV for a bigger one :)

Yes - fully agree. Add the rubber eyepice (DK 19 I think) it excludes extraneous light reaching your eye and the detail in the viewfinder is easier still to read.

Image quality is brilliant. There are 100s of professional photographers shooting on the 28-300, especially on the red carpet where the versatility makes it absolutely wonderful.

As an all round lens, there is nothing better.

I have that, but I find it a bit annoying sometimes. I think its because I cant close one eye! I might get the DK17M too, see if that helps any.

I heard that too. And this lens is quite famous with photo journalists as well. Tried it but I'm just not sure if I should really buy it. Hmmm

The DK-17M is great - the only problem with it is that it makes the vertical exposure scale on the extreme right of the viewfinder (D3 series) much harder to see.
I find I have to angle my head/eye slightly against the eyepiece to find the scale.

This happens only on d3 or it applies to the d700 as well?

IIRC There's no vertical scale on the D700 - only a horizontal scale as such... Then again I spose that if you tilt the D700 then the horizontal would become vertical

It only applies to D3 series bodies which have a vertical exposure scale on the extreme rhs of viewfinder. The D700's horizontal scale is along the bottom - it's closer to the centre of the v/f so it's still easy to see when using the DK-17M.

I still prefer the D3's scale though since it's a lot less cluttered, plus the vertical orientation makes more sense to my small brain :).

Guys just a quick question, is it possible to set the maximum ISO and minimum shutter speed when I mount a flash on the d700? Because everytime I did, it sets the ISO to 200.

i dont think so, using auto iso with the flash is ok but it does tend to select iso 200.
your better of in manual and using bounce, iso 400 f8 shutter speed 1/200th. the results will be top. heres a quick sample.
and adjusting the power of the flash, i find +1ev pleanty. in a room about 20x20

f2.8 iso 400 1/200th sec.

Thanks. So this means that the auto ISO will only work without the flash ey? Okay then :D

Well went to get a 24-70 or 85 1.4d today to go with my d700 as i had just been using my 50 1.8d.
They didnt have either so ended up walking with a 85 1.4g as it was only £100 more than the 24-70.
Only had a small play with it on the train on the way home but it seems like a cracking lens, cant wait to use it in anger.
