:agree: how do you find it compares to the 85 and the 50? as this are on my to buy list?

sam

The 85 I've not had long and have only used it a couple of times. I love it, this is one lens that I know will live up to expectations. As for the 50, again it's a great lens and if 50 was the focal length I needed then I don't see why I'd use the 24-70 over it. I use the 50 when I go street togging and have used it for portraits a fair bit, although it may find itself pretty redundant now that I've got the 85.

If I was confident enough to shoot weddings using only primes, I'd sell the 24-70. When I get my second D700 I may just do that.

got my d700 and 24-70 today. :)
now need to ask a few questions...
is there a way of having all the focus points show in the view finder,i had this on my d90but cant find a way to put it on with the d700.
im not sure if its the light in the house, or user error but im finding it hard to get anything in focus.even when it shows the focus point after viewing the picture the bit thats in the focus point tsill isnt sharpor in focus.
i think the term all the gear and no idea, sums me up at the moment

Congrats on being a D700 owner by the way

IIRC - You wont get all 51 focus points to light up only those that are in focus  usually about a dozen...

  I'm in the same boat - with all the gear & no idea :$

edit:

Got mine out (D700) what position is the switch at the rear on (under the thumb dial)??

To get multiple FP it should be on the rectangle (top symbol) Dynamic I think is the correct name (but maybe wrong - as stated above - all gear no idea)

In the Autofocus men menu A3 what do you have that set to?? 9, 21, 51 or 51 with 3d tracking

Hope the edit helps you remember

Try a6 to ON (instead of AUTO or OFF).

It's not the same as on a D90.

when its set to dynamic theres no focus points.
on multi(i think it is) or single point theres only one focus point in the centre thats movable around the no. i have selected.
wasnt sure if its just because there are so many thats why its not the same as the d90(it only has 9 points and all can been seen in the view finder, just the selected is in red)
got a3 set to 51 and had a6 set to on.

still having problems getting sharp shots though, with either my 24-70 or 50 1.8d. think its down to the realy bad light in my house though, struggles to get a shutter speed of over 60 even with auto iso at 3200 and either lens wide open at 2.8 or 1.8.

sry onemore question is the shutter ment to be so loud,it seems 2-3 times louder than my d90,it has a real clunk to it.

The D700 doesn't light up all the points so it's not the same as your D90.

Re focus - try it in daylight and see what you get. I'd be very surprised if the D700/24-70mm combo is playing up focus-wise.

Don't worry about the shutter clunk - it's normal

PS. Try it on single point AF (p 74 in manual) - do you get any focus points lighting up?

just checked my shutter count and its showing 389.
ive only taken 100 shots at most, should i contact jessops.they got it from another shop for me,and with this many shots looks to be a display model, should i say something to them.

I'm pretty hot on things like that and always check the first image that I take. If you're 100% sure (check the EXIF of the first image you took) then I'd take it back, although I wouldn't say that you've already put another 300 clicks on it, just make out you've only taken a handful of shots.

A lot of people wouldn't bother, but when spending over £1700 I'd expect it to be completely mint and untouched.

Treated myself to a 70-200mm VR II and a 135mm f/2 DC. Both lovely lenses from just playing about so far. This 135mm will take a bit of getting used to though.

The 135mm is a superb lens just don't move the front/ back focus ring and then forget that you had done so :'( its very easy to do this as I once found out...

Yeah I did make that mistake a few times and sometimes. I've ended up with some soft focus type 1940s glamour shots which although look distinctive wasn't exactly what I was going for. I was deciding between completing the trinity with the 14-24mm, but I never feel like I need wider than the 24-70 and the fact I'd need a £300+ filter for the 14-24mm sealed its fate.

I can see why the 135mm is called the King of Bokeh though from some shots on Nikon Cafe, although mastering it will be another thing altogether.

LOL, I have the 14-24mm and its just an expensive paper weight I just don't find the situations where I need to use it, still its paid for so it can sit on the shelf ;)

I'd just like to once again endorse how utterly superb this camera is. I had to shoot a Christening today, not yet had to go above 2500 but today I was shooting 3200 and even 4000 for a couple of shots. No problem whatsoever, the camera saved my bacon with ease.

I'm definitely getting another one of these within the next couple of weeks.

Well I've got enough now for a 70-200vr2 if I sell my 80-200 f2.8 but need to decide if I could gain more from spending the £1200 on something else! I don't have a shorter lens than the 24-70 or a long lens than 200 so maybe a Sigma X-500 or the 14-24......... I really do need to try the 80-200 against the 70-200 vr and 70-200 vr2 all in the same conditions.

Got my second D700 on its way within a few days, now want to go wide. Has anyone used both the 14-24 f/2.8 and 16-35 f/4 to be able to give a comparison?

I'd never use filters, in fact it would be a rarely used lens, only for going wide occasionally at weddings. I must admit, the 16-35 does tempt me more than the 17-35 purely on price. I know the 14-24 is very expensive but from what I see, it's well worth it.

Cheers Brian, it's the same link but it's very informative, although I've since read that vignetting is pretty bad on the 16-35. Maybe a second hand 17-35 will be the better bet.

considering the 16-35 is a fair bit cheaper then the 17-35 would it be worth hiring one (the 16-35) for a while to see if you can address or realise your worries with it

Maybe, but I know I want to get a wide angle so I think I'll probably end up going down the 17-35 second hand route, they go for around £850 I think, which is a new 16-35.

Hey all, im considering selling my D40 and DX lenses and getting a nifty fifty 1.8 for one of my D700's to make it a bit more compact for family days out. I have not used the D40 since getting the D700's so I guess it makes sense to sell it.

Has anyone got any sample shots of the 50mm 1.8 on a D700?
Or is there something else I should consider that is a bargain?

On a d700 I'd push the boat out a little and go for the 1.4 over the 1.8. I would of thought that your d40 and lenses would cover it

What sort of price does the 1.4 go for SH?
Is it a D mount like the 1.8?

Cheers

there is a D version and a much improved AF-S G version around. The G goes for around 250gbp (if you search hard)

Here's a few of mine taken with the 1.4. As Hugh says, I'd certainly pay the extra for it.

Thanks everyone. Some great shots, it certainly looks like a good lens.

If anyone spots a bargain if they could PM me a link it would be appreciated

Don't worry peeps found one for £230

Looking forward to trying it out, should have it on Saturday.

It's my combo when out on the streets, can't beat the good old 50.
