I have the D60 with kit lens 18-55mm non VR and the excellent 70-300VR, I'm new to DSLR's and find this is a great camera for me.
Don't forget the D40 if your budget is tight. Try this flckr group for research.

i want to take some motor sport pics, will the 18mm lens be ok for that
Thanks for advise everyone
does anyone else have any views on the D60
really temped to order one, are they user friendly,i want to learn about photography and am looking for a good camera to start with
They seem to be - if you forgot the remove the lens cap, the camera says "subject too dark" etc!
Its an entry level camera, and dead simple to use. TBH you could hand me any Nikon camera and I could use it without needing to read manuals etc, so for me its just a small light backup, with nice image quality.
User friendly? I reckon so yes.
I love my D60, my missus bought me it for my xmas present and I hardly put it down
I got it with the 18-55mm VR... I definately say go for it... I want the 70-300VR lens as mentioned above next.
My only problem with the camera, is also one of its qualities. It is quite a small body and I have huge hands which means I seem to get quite a lot of camera shake because i can only grip it with two n a bit fingers. Unlike my girlfriends dad's d80 which fits into my hands perfectly. However we didn't have the budget for a D80. Gf's dad really likes my D60 though and compares it quite similarly to his D80.
