Nikon D5xxx Owners Thread

Hi and here's a dumb question - i were glasses for close up so when using the view finder i can adjust the viewfinder to get my eyes in focus
cant use the back lcd screen cause i cant find a way to adjust it so to be fair in the 15 months ive had it never used the lcd screen
or am i missin summat here

supose i asked for that - dont always remember the darn things lol:D
 
:D On live view the lcd shows what the lens is showing so you cant change that, in playback it shows the image in focus (hopefully) so you cant change that, you want to buy some string off me to tie 'em round your neck :shrug:

Specsavers are doing 2 for 1 I think :p

Not sure if you guys are aware but there is a control update available for the D5000 from the sipport/firmware section on the Nikon website.

"Distortion control data are used to correct barrel and pincushion distortion during shooting and editing. They can be loaded into cameras that support distortion control".

There is a link at the bottom of the page with installation instructions.

Hi all, can anyone advise me on a book for the Nikon d5000. I'm looking at 3 books but I’m undecided.

David Busch's Compact Guide for the Nikon D5000
David Buschs Nikon D5000 Guide to Digital SLR Photography
Nikon D5000 For Dummies

Has anyone any thoughts on it.

As per my reply in your other thread. Magic Lantern guide is worth a look.
 
Thanks for that, I didn't know about the Magic Lantern........I'm just a starting with the dslr so i need a step by step simple book......I could relate to the dummy part of the dummies book LOL.

I was a new comer myself back in October when I got my d5000. Being honest, I found the more generic photography (eg understanding exposure) more beneficial than my camera guide. The magic lantern book had a few nice tips but I can't help thinking I'd have found them without it. I'm not really sure what my point is other than maybe suggesting that if you only buy 1 book, maybe something more generic would be of more use.

By the way if you have an iPhone, there are some good d5000 aps available very cheaply.
 
Rita - I bought the book at the same time as the camera and found it very useful to read and do at the same time. I already had a little knowledge of aperture/depth of field/shutter speed so found the book great for refreshers and also some of the neat stuff in the menus.

Other folks will rave on about "understanding exposure" book, which I think I will buy later. For the moment, enjoy having fun and experimenting with your camera.

Thats great news mate. Ive ordered now anyway:lol: BigYin and Steve had both shown the one i ordered so im happy to go with it and also some of the others stated they fitted the D40, 60 and D5000.

Hi all, I'm trying to get some landscape or scenery shots....has anyone any advice on what mode i should be shooting in and what would be the best settings if the light is good ?

Also i have a picture to show, but don't knoe how to post it. :thinking:

Hi Rita, I would say use manual for full controll but if you're not confident with that then there is a landscape 'preset' in the scene mode.

As for posting pics try here for a guide.

many people upload their images to a host site
but i dont as I've useless at computer stuff -- ages tells !

so reduce image to 800x600 using Paint.Net or similar and save file size <200kb

open TP - at the top menu bar open "Galleries" in a new tab
select "Upload Photos" - browse - goto your image - select/open
back to Galleries - Upload
your image is now in your folder at TP

open the image..........copy Linked Image URL NOT the thumbnail

open your post in relevant TP forum
click small mountain icon
paste OK
should now load into your post

Jeeeez --- sounds worse than it actually is..........:thumbs:

Just noticed this post. I'll download it tonight. Any idea how this works? Does the camera recognise which lens you have fitted and apply a preset? I only ask my 18-135 distorts like a b****r at it's widest end.

NIce find....just updated mine....its a piece of cake. There is a list of lenses which it can deal with.....I guess it DOES apply a 'preset' distortion value and the camera certainly recognizes the lenses as it stores the lens info in the meta data.

Sounds perfect. Does this apply to RAW files or Jpeg conversion only?

I just bought a Nikon AF-S DX 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens, i cant wait for it to arrive.....hurry hurry postman :)

may I ask what you paid/and where..? PM me if shy...:D

should you wish to buy filters, I recommend
a Marumi 58mm DHG Protector
a Marumi 58mm DHG circ polariser .........i have both for my Sigma 72mm filters

if you can afford Hoya Pro-1 Digital or even Hoya HD series - they are prob better - but not markedly so considering the higher cost IMO

would really like to know what you think in a couple of weeks - as it is the next lens on my list....so post up some at 55 and at 300mm ............:thumbs:
 
I got it on ebay for £219, i thought it was a good enough price...but maybe i'm off the mark...thanks for the filter advice..... god this is and expensive hobby :lol:

:D.......you dont ''need'' a CPL right away ...good for blue sky in landscapes

the protector is up to you
the front element glass on my Sigma 17-70mm is rather exposed so i use a Marumi 72mm ''Protector''

you could get a Hoya 58mm HMC UV (0) or UV (C) as a ''protector''
(0) is original....(C) is modern slimline

must be HMC Multi-coated as I found the standard UV(0) - green box - although quoted as ''coated both sides'' are not as good at reducing flare as the HMC version

I would buy new from "Englor"...£11.99.............after a few bad experiences on eBay with used filters being scratched
 
Ya i wouldn't buy a filter for ebay, but i will take a look at englor's page .....looking forward to getting the lens and shooting with it.....there is so much to learn, but this forum is great.

Hi All,

A new member here and another D5000 owner. Current bag of lenses are 18-55 VR, 55-200VR, 35mm f1.8 and my latest, a 12-24 f4.

D5000 is my first DSLR and I'm really enjoying it. I did make the mistake of asking to have a play with a d7000 in a shop today though. Very nice.

i think raangefinder for focus only works in A and S mode. in manual mode it is for exposure.
need to check it bit i think thats how it works

i contacted Hahnel USA some months ago

they didn't make a specific D5000 grip at the time

so i used the Hahnel one off my D40 - fits ok - only batteries though, no extra controls
