Yes
I have been looking and trying different Nikon's and for the price like the d5100.

I will be buying the 5100 but they through a curve ball at me.

Kit deal 1, 5100 with Nikon AF-S 18-105mm f3.5-5.6 ED VR Lens
and a Tamron 70-300mm F4/5.6 DI LD Macro (Nikon AF)

For £599.99 (jessop shop near me)

or

deal 2
Nikon D5100 Twin Lens Kit +nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm VR +nikor DX 55-200mm VR (online)

for £489.00

So not really sure what to do, understand the jessop price is naturally higher, but like the idea of having a shop near me to walk in if things go wrong.

Like the idea or having slightly more range, but on the other hand the second deal offers both nikon lenses and saves me £110 which i would like to put towards a small 50mm F1.8 or similar.

any help or advice would be good, the extra lengh is nice but would i be better having 2 nikon lenses or is the tamron perfectly fine ???

Or maybe another good starter lens i could sway in or mix in the deal ??

:bonk: :bang:

i want to be rich and not have to make these decisions

cheers
wayne

I've only used the lenses you mention in option 2 and they were fine, Nikon sells a lot of these and for the money they perform well.

The argument of buying online vs a shop is a completely different thing. Personally I'd buy on line and get yourself a 35mm f1.8 with the money you save, you certainly wouldn't be disappointed with that.

Just to note, I'm not sure if the D5100 has the focus motor built in the body, I know the D3100 doesn't and if that's the case you need to use Nikon lenses with the motor in the lens (AF-S). Something worth noting as the 50mm f1.8 you mentioned is available with and without the AF-S.

I don't think the non vc tamron 70-300mm lens was particularly good and vibration control is always a nice feature for a tele zoom lens. I would prefer the 2 nikon lenses accompanied buy the nikon 35mm f1.8 prime which can be had for £140, giving you a nice setup for little over £600.

i second this

It doesn't, OP will need to get the AF-S version (or buy a D7000 ;) )

hi

i would personally go for the all nikon set up
also dont know if it helps i get nphoto mag and it looks like nikon are doing cashback from 1/11/12 to 21/01/13 and when i bought my camera from a nikon premier dealer they were running a scheme called nikon plus which means you get discounts on additional products and vouchers vaild for six months so it may be worth giving your local nikonpremier dealer a ring to see if they still run the offer:) hope that helps

Thank you for all the help, i heard something about grey imports, i assume the kit deal 2 is that.

So my question is, does it matter, will i void warranty or not have one or anything silly ??

Blowing £600 on my first dslr will hurt for a while so i need to try and get the most versatile set-up to last some time till i can afford or more o know what i want, hense the questions.

thanks again

also, what sort of money is the 35mm af-s ??

Grey imports will not have a Nikon warranty just a shop one. if anything goes wrong you will more than likely have to post it back to Hong Kong. You may also have to pay import taxes on the door.

The 35mm on a d5100 is equivalent to a 50mm on a full frame camera which is a more useful focal length. UK price is around £140-£150.

Canon and Nikon UK won't normally touch grey imports if anything goes wrong, so stuff would have to be sent back to where you bought it from. Some eBay dealers only give their own warranty not the manufacturers.
There are perfectly respectable grey importers - HDEW and FlashCamera (Kerso on this forum)being the two most well known and used on the forum. Digital Rev deal direct from Hong Kong but have a big following.

Personally I would give eBay a wide berth (apart from perhaps the Canon Refurb Outlet (if you were looking for Canon products) - canon_uk1

Thanks peeps, had the strange feeling it was to good to be true, maybe thats what made me ask.

:'(

Looks like im back to the drawing board, i see their is a online deal at curry's 449 with 18-55 lens plus £50 off with online code.

So £399 and need to decide which lens/lenses i need/want.

ill have about £200- maybe £350 left.

certainly want a small good indoor lens, and/or a tele

Panamoz are a grey importer but they have a uk office and offer a replacement warranty. If anything goes wrong you post it to the uk office they check it over then post out a new item for you, so no waiting around. Prices are a little bit more than you quoted but the price includes any import taxes. Price is £575 with the replacement warranty. If you pay by bank transfer you can get another 5% off.

I bought my D7000 from Pamamoz and had no probs, it's like anything, you pays your money, you make your choice.

Thank you so much for all the advice.

could i please ask your opinion on these :

NIKON 50mm f/1.8D AF-S LENS (£79),
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G (£265),
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G (£179) -- this is what i leaning towards
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D (£295) -

not really looked into prices so dont, i assume these are about correct.

So what im thinking now is basic d5100 with 18-55 standard kit lens and then 1 of the above and a nikon sb400 or sb700 flash.

Again having no knowledge of this stuff, im trying to get a versatile set up which should see me through most situations untill i find my feet and direction i would like to go.

By all means if you know or have another idea, please feel free to suggest, i have no real plan, just their will be indoor shooting, and maybe the odd landscape, Saturday football type thing and would like to try portrait/baby/animal stuff. (mainly my own :) )

Only the af-s lenses will auto focus on the d5100. The £140 35mm sf-s f1.8g is better suited prime lens for a d5100, being the equivalent to a 50mm on a full frame camera. Saturday football will need a zoom lens have a look at the 55-200mm vr which can be had for only £130.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR

Just wondering now if it would be better to get body only and spend the other £400 ish on one good lens ??

The 24-85 is a full frame lens 24mm not being very wide on a d5100 for landscapes etc.. I went body only then bought a tamron 17-50 f2.8 which can be had for £250 leaving you money to buy the 55-200mm zoom lens too. The Tamron 17-50 is one of the sharpest lenses on the market and a bargain. Knocks spots off the 18-55 kit lens. At f2.8 it's a much better low light shooter too.

I have the 85mm 1.8G on a D90 and it is rarely off my camera now. I use it indoors for candid portraits of our toddler and love it. Quite a bit more money though than the 35 and 50 1.8G's though...

You must have a big house! I find them lens than ideal for chasing kids around indoors.

You must have a big house!

:) not that big, just that she is 20 months old and if I get too close she tries to grab the camera and gets very distracted - easier to stand back a bit. I have just experimented and from about 10 feet away can get a full body shot without getting her attention too much.

My boy is 23 months and he doesn't sit still long enough to shoot anything over around 35mm i'm forced then to crop:)

So are saying the 85mm would be useless in doors ??

From reviews I'm looking at body only with tamron 17-50 thing (thanks for that)
And the 85 f1.8 g

Do you think this would give me varied options ?

no not useless just quite zoomy so you need to be a distance away from the subject.

I just bought a tamron 17-50 this week and I am totally impressed with the results! Very sharp and great colours and contrast.

Thanks guys, looking to get body and Tamron 17-50 and 85 f 1.8g

A bit over my 600 Max price.

But from what I have read, it should be good

I hope this wont disappoint ?

For info Nikon have just launched a cash back offer (may only be applicable when buying from UK authorised dealer?) £55 on the D5100 so can be found for about £290 body only or £350 with kit lens. D5200 may be announced next week?

Oh great, any idea if the 5200 is going to be much difference ?

But thanks I will look into that body deal,

How much warranty do you get with UK model ?

I'm not sure if they still do it, but Nikon used to offer 1 year standard, or 2 years if you registered it within a month or so?

Something like that at least.

Yeah it's 2 years....or rather 1st year with the retailer and then when registering nikon give you another year in top
Not sure about the cash back, may have to do a search for that

Scott,

Where did you find this deal:

deal 2
Nikon D5100 Twin Lens Kit +nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm VR +nikor DX 55-200mm VR (online)

for £489.00

Was it HDEW?

Al

Al

No it wasn't mate, online somewhere.

After speaking to hdew, they might match it ? But I didn't ask as I've decided against a long lens now

Thanks for the link, but I'm lost why are they comparing to the 3200 and not the 5100 ?

Sorry I thought you asked what the difference was between d5100 and d5200
In specification that's why I posted link?:)

yes i did and thank you, just the link compares the 5200 to the 3200,

so thats got me confused, me thinking the 3k range was lower end and the 5k range middle ground type, yet the 3200 seems to have better specs than the 5100 ??

I know im missing something, but not sure what, or have nikon outdone the 5100 with the 3200 ??

Does anyone know a shop/person i can actually talk to that knows more than whats wrote on paper in front of them ?? tried 3-4 different shops now and they are tell me the same, the specs.

Yes the d3100/d3200 are Nikon s entry level cameras the d3200 is the newer model with with 24.2mp sensor etc the d5100 which is up for replacement has the d7000 sensor which is a excellent sensor 16.2mp the new version d5200 will be 24.2 but if it has a similar launch price as the d5100 779 with kit lens is nearly twice the price if it was me I have pets kids etc same a as you I would save yourself the money and buy the d5100 and the extra money would be better in lenses some times I think we can get carried away with specs

I would try lce in Colchester for advice they do mail order speak to dave:)

Thank you so much, I totally agree I am one of those that gets hung up on specs.

I wonder how we ever managed to buy things before the net. ;)

Decided getting 5100 with Tamron 17-50 and Nikon 85 f1.8g.

Now vc or non, ummm

Is it just ice or ice photography, can't find a number
