Nikon D3xxx owners thread

Just a quicky... is it a myth that only genuine nikon batteries can be used with the d3100?

Thanks

It is true, however, if you use a battery grip as long as you put the genuine one in first for the camera to recognise you can then use a third party one or I think it's one for the othe version of it from Nikon (think it's for a p3100?) for the second.

I do this and can confirm it works.

Bit late joining this thread, but a (relatively) new and very happy D3100 user here. Very glad I made the step up from a ageing bridge to this. My only regret is I wish I'd done it years ago. :)

Evening, I'm at a loss here and having a proper blonde moment

When I set the flash compensation to say -3.0 and then pop the flash up to use, the compensation returns back to 0.0 .

I've read the manual, had a google, but just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong

Any thoughts please :)

in the menu you have set the flash power to manual rather than auto TTL

Change it to Auto in the menu and its all good. Leave it manual and you cant change the flash compensation (obviously) and it shows as 0.

Just tested it on mine and that's what happened.

Thanks biggles. Helpful advice :)

Happy to say I joined the d3100 family a few days ago! Also have a nikkor 55-200 on the way for my first bit of zoom help.

Will get some pics here asap

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with either the Nikkor 55-300, Nikkor 70-300 or Tamron 70-300 VC with a D3100, and if so, if it's been a good one. Currently looking to upgrade my 55-200 non-VR and looking most closely at these options.

Thanks in advance.

I have a 70-300 VR with mine. It's a great combination - the lens is very quick and sharp. I see a couple in the classifieds so well worth it IMO.

Do any D3100 owners get their camera regulary 'serviced' and if so, how often and where to send it?

Being new to DSLR stuff this year, I'm not clued up on this side. Do you normally get the camera checked over once a year?

At the risk of asking a really noob question...

So are there two versions of this lens? I see some prices mid £200s and others just over £100...

Yes, you need the af-s version as it has a built in motor ( the body of the d3100 doesn't have a built in motor )

The cheaper version of the 70-300 nikon would be manual focus only on this body.

I was right - a really noob question - I knew that :bonk:

thank you, sir!

Cheers for the response. As it happens that's the only one of the three that falls above my budget new, will have to keep a look out for one second-hand.

Get posting and then look in the classifieds here. Only just went for £250-ish I think

D3100 people..! Recommend me a remote shutter release please?

What you all got

:)

JD

I brought the same as Phil-D, great bit of kit and works from a fair distance away.

Thanks both think ill get one ordered :)

Schoolboy question. ..where does it connect? Looks odd in the pics.

Thanks

Hey all.. juat after some recommendations for useful bits of kit / lenses that you guys can recommend..

Currently using my:

18-55 kit Nikkor VR and 55-200 Nikkor VR lenses.. picked up the above mentioned shutter release, got an 'average' tripod.

Interested in wildlife/pet shots along with a bit of landscape/street at the moment..

Anyone else reeeeeally paranoid about taking the dslr out in not so clever weather? I feel like I havnt touched it in a week or so due to this flipping weather :(

get some grad filters for landscapes - hitech are a good place to start as not too pricey.

I'm that paranoid about my camera that I'm about to buy a d7000

Grad filters are a good shout.. think ill get buying some filters next before more lenses..currently only have a uv filter for each lens for protection purposes.

I fancy a nice prime but in all honesty not yet up on the full benefit/ best use of one

What about the D3200...

Oops........................................................... :$ :$

Sorry - hangs head in shame - not my intention to be unfriendly :(
If you have a question about the functionality then ask - the D3200 is basically the same as the D3100 as I understand

I have got a D3100 with the two kit lenses, 18-55mm and 55-200mm. I am looking to get a lens in the coming weeks, either the Nikon 50mm 1.8 AF-S or the 35mm AF-s. What would people go for?? I know that I am going to get asked 'well what sort of picture do you take' and to be honest there is no set answer, I do take a lot of pictures of my 2 boys, I also fancy doing a bit of portrait photography in the future. If you have a look at my Flickr you will see that there is no set pattern to my photography so far..... Thank you

Set your 18-55 to 35mm and 50mm and see which focal length you like best, personally i would have a 35 over a 50 especially for indoor shots.

Hey guys, what's everyone preference on grips for the d3100? And do the all come with the cable for extra button?

Talking of cables does anyone know if I can buy the cable on its own ?

Let's just say had a little accident with mine.

Hi David,
there are no official grips for the 3100 - the unofficial ones all have a cable round the side

Perry - do you mean the cable for the grip - in which case I don't know as I havent got one
