Guys,
Picking up new D3s on Tuesday...........any recommendations on must have accessories that I should pick up at the same time. i.e. remote trigger, memory etc etc

A superb camera that you will absolutely love! A couple of things you may want to consider getting for it would be:-

Nikon MC-36 remote release if you are doing any long exposures over 30 seconds.

Spare battery - Although the battery life is good it is always good to know you have a back up.

What lenses will you be using with the D3s?

I guess the remote that I had for the D7k is NOT compatible??
Battery for sure
I was going to get 2 x 32 GB cards
Maybe a mono pod....what do you think
The lenses that I have now are the;
50mm f1.4G
24/70 f2.8
Will get the 70/200mm f2.8 on Tuesday with the D3s Body
The lens I plan to get over the next few months will be the;
14/24mm f2.8 and a Wide Prime
I already have a CPL and ND filter, I have been trying to get a GND filter as well but cant find one anywhere.....maybe need to look on eBay

An alternative strap - something like a Black Rapid RS7.

Tried various memory cards and settled with the Sandisk 16GB Extreme Compact Flash Card 90MBS.

What make and spec are you getting? I tried them and the buffering was very slow even with a camera firmware upgrade. It may be different on the D3s but I would check it out.

You got a decent tripod and monopod? You will enjoy a nice carbon jobbie with a posh head, cool engineering ;)

Billingham bag? Lovely taste of Blighty.

Large bunch of flowers prolly a good idea. You will need four :D

I had the Scan-disc Extreme in the D7K and they worked good, so was planning on going with the same brand

Steve,
I just checked out the RS7 strap online and it looks great, I hope I can pick up one of those puppies here in KL, if not then I will get it shipped in.
A question, if you are using a tripod shoe on the bottom of the camera and say a 50mm lens how can you attach the strap??

I would go for 4x16gb cards personally. If a card goes tits up you are less likely to lose a ton of images. Perhaps even 8x8gb cards...

Neil, you can only use the tripod attachment for the strap so when you want to use a tripod you need to remove the strap (if thats what you mean, sorry if its not?).

I also invested in a hand grip (Nikon AH4) and I use this about 50% of the time on its own. This still uses the tripod attachment on the camera but this has a screw inlet to allow you to still attach either the strap or tripod while it is on.

The hand grip is a bit of a pain when you shoot in portrait because it slightly reduces access to the 2nd shutter release button, but... its works for me as I have got use to it. It may seem OTT but its a big investment you have there.

Agree with that. It feels really uncomfortable and cheap to me but everyones different, try it out first Neil, I changed it within a week.

I wouldn't go for the 14-24 and a wide prime. TBH at the moment, with the kit you have, or plan for I'd just go for the 14-24 and not duplicate any point of it with a faster prime.

For a GND un;ess you want to fit it on the 14-24 specifically I'd look at the Cokin holders and some square filters

the strap that comes with professional nikon cameras is perfect...

No they're not. The strap on my D3S is crap and cheap looking considering the price of the body Nikon have scimped on the strap. The straps on my old D2H were made of a better quality and were fine but the new ones are cheap.

I have replaced my straps with the TP branded OpTech straps and they are great and comfortable for the price. Have a look in the Talk Photography Shop for the straps.

Hi

The strap that comes with the D3S would just about be OK for walking the dog.

Who would want to advertise the fact that they have a real goodie hanging from there neck. Somebody might cut your head off to take it.

I don't have any accessories for any of mine... apart from a copy of the intervalometer/cable release that I use about twice a year

Straps are fine, however I generally always have big glass on mine so never carry it by the strap anyway

OpTech Pro Straps are my choice of strap, super comfy too! I've got a Hoodman clip-on cover for the rear LCD. People say the screen is scratch resistant but I'm not about test that theory. I also have DK19 eye cups hooked up to my bodies but it's not really a necessity.

the D3s rear screen isn't scratch resistant, I have proof of this :(

Same here. Although I had a D3 for several years and now my D3s for almost a year and I've never used screen protectors and only put my first scratch in the rear LCD recently. I still wouldn't put a cover on it though.

A new strap is a must if you need a strap. The OpTech ones can't be beat IMO.

I'd got for 4 x 16gig cards, purely because I use two 16gigs in mine and I've never filled one up in a day, so 32 might be overkill (unless you shot a LOT and do video, or are thinking about using them in a future higher res camera).

Likewise Richard, I didn't buy them to sit on a shelf looking pretty :D

I keep around 4 x 16gb cards per body, but I shoot to both at once in case one fails, never used more than that in a day

Hay man,
I noticed that the 70/200mm has two treaded slots on the tripod mount, should I attach the strap to one of these or should I attach the strap on the body when using the big 70/200mm?????

Buy a book on how to use it, make sure it covers lenses as well.
