Nikon D300S or D2Xs - Any owners? What think?

And there's me typing my fingers to bloody stumps for him to only go off and buy a commoner's camera - sheesh!!

 im with you on that one but sometimes :bang:

which ever one you buy will give you good service but i can help rembering you said the d2 felt better untill it was ruined by the feel of the d3 .......get the d2 in that case .....if you do go for the smaller the 300s benrfits from a d300 are not worth the extra imo ....put the 300 you save towards your glass

I hope not. You'll never be able to work all the little switches and buttons on your D2X with bloody stumps.

Had a fiddle in a camera shop with a d2xs and my d300 grip on a d300s..

Honestly, if you buy a D2Xs over a d300s - i think it's a mistake... you can learn to live with the slight ergonomic disadvantage the d300s has in comparison to the D2Xs, but all the extra features (ISO, Video, FPS, the better looking menu system, resale value etc etc), and capability for me are just too vast to throw away when spending my precious little money. If you think the D2Xs has a specific 'look' that you want ( i couldn't see any noticeable difference) then just download the free color profiles on the nikon website and add it to your more capable d300s.

Furthermore, I LOVE the fact that I can take off the grip and take my camera + maybe a little 35/50/85 prime to a family event, out and about with friends and take pictures without intimidating everyone with my Mahoosive professional body, but then when I want, I can grip it up and throw on a heavy 70/200 and get serious..

Not trying to start an argument, but honestly in my opinion a d300s wins for my money and bang for the buck.

I've got a D2X and a D300, the veiw finder of the D2X is awsome! Its so nice to use compared to the D300,

As a veristle carry everywhere camera when you are not sure what your going to shoot, then the D300 (with out grip for me) is the winner,

If I know what I'm going to be shoot and it will be under 400 ISO then I will prefer my D2X.

Stuart

Well, I thought I'd solve this dilemma by putting an offer in on a D700 in the classifieds but it was sold elsewhere. Darn! Back to the drawing board.

Nice to have the D2X for such specific circumstances. How decadent. ;)

The D300(S) is the better choice most of the time though. And with and without the grip, more versatile imho.

Going the D700 route could take you down a more expensive lens path if you weren't going down the top of the range lens route already. ;)

I would have one of those though if somebody gave one to me. Though maybe with only one good lens.

paulcamcas.................................quick heads up d2xs on ebay just over 5k on the clock says was insurance replacement 6 months ago ....??? has a best offer on it so may be worth a punt and not too far away from u in barnsley

it is only 1 of 3 on there 1 i wouldnt bother with and the other is way to overpriced even with what he has with it

Basicly I mean it is my prefered portrait camera, as I normaly mount a f1.4 or f2 lens on it then in most cases ISO400 is more than enough,

But if our man is concidering a D700 then surely he could afford a D300 and a D2X?

when shooting primes having two cameras is more valuable than having one nice camera, (in my book anyway!)

Thanks Grudie, I tried what I thought was a sensible offer yesterday but it was turned down flat. What's the max you guys reckon I should go?

I'll probably have a bid on the other one ending tonight.

Despite the offer on the D700, I'm trying to keep as much money for glass as I can. And, it doesn't seem to matter how many times my head calculates that a D300s is a better camera, I just don't seem to want one. I'm thinking that 2DXs + 85mm f1.4 + 20mm f2.8 will do me while I get the hang of Nikon. Then who knows... better glass, 2nd body, back to Canon :bonk:

Was also thinking about a 20-35mm F2.8 zoomie for the wide end. Anybody used one of these old boys?

paulcamcas ....depends on what it is worth to you try him at 900 and see what he says personally for that low milage i would go to 950 .......i wouldnt be interested in the other one as that IS going to let all sorts into the battery chamber and also looking at the pics the cover is cracked as well (tho u can pick up replacements)

yep, I've got one on my D700 - excellent lens and incredibly well built, along the lines of the 28 1.4, 85 1.4D etc. 20mm is plenty wide enough for most purposes (I've got a Sigma 12-24 for ultra-wide) and image quality is great, nice and sharp at 2.8. A lot of lens for the money, and no old AF-S motor to break

just noticed that the 2 on ebay have gone ....did you get one ??

No I didn't and I'm rather peeved about it. I went to up my offer to £900 for the better one and it had already gone for exactly that amount. Somehow I entirely missed the ending of the other one.

I've just posted in the Wanted section here for either a D700, D300s or D2Xs - I'm an equal opportunities camera buyer - and listing some glass that might do me. Hope something decent comes up. Tbh. Also watching ebay like a hawk.

thats a shame paul thought you would have bagged one of those .......is well worth watching ebay as the d2xs do come up sometimes hopefully someone on here will have something you want ...cex have what they call a b grade in not to far away from you which may be worth a look ....bit pricey at 685 but you do get 12 months warranty ??

Keep an eye on the Grays of Westminster site too - they don't tend to hang about for long on there - so check often.

www.graysofwestminster.co.uk

I kick myself on an hourly basis for not buying the one I tried while I was there. It may have been a hundred quid more expensive than I thought it should be but I've wasted so much time since it would have been worth every penny.

Was that the 95 clicks one? :)

No, I know you bought that before I even knew 2DXs's existed

It was 3k clicks for £995. Although after I'd tried it in the street outside it was probably nearer 4k :D

I am very sorry to tell you helpful Nikonians that I just couldn't get to grips (literally) with Nikon bodies and have returned to Canon with my tail between my legs. I genuinely appreciate all the advice given and greatly regret not following it.

Well, my attempt to return to Canon was a big fail! Park Cameras told me today that they don't actually have the camera I ordered online last night. Not really Canon's fault I suppose but I expected better of Park Cameras.

take that as a sign you are meant to have a nikon !!!

After all the twists and turns maybe he's not supposed to have any camera.

Or even worse, an Olympus. ;)

What Canon did you not get btw?

PS Olympus was chosen for comedy value not as an indictment against the brand. ;)

Hah! I've already got an Olympus E-P1. Very fine little camera. I've half a mind just to wait for an E-P3 and the two fast primes they've just announced.

The camera I didn't get was a 5D2. The really annoying thing is that I bought OneTen's 70-200mm F4L in the confident expectation of being able to slap it straight onto my shiny new 5D2. It's sitting ion my desk as I type, I'm sure it's sneering. Man plans and the gods p*ss themselves.

dunno what your budget is or if it is what you are looking for but cex coventry have a 7d with a 24-105 in for a shade over 1500£ with 12 months warranty (and if you are paying cash ask for 5% discount it usually works)

The saga ends. Much as I wanted to switch to Nikon, whichever model I tried didn't quite fit my hand/iq/lens/price/availability balance. I think if a good d700 had come up, I would have gone for it. But it didn't, so I have turned away from the light and await delivery of a minty 5D2 bought from the classifieds here. Devil you know and all that.

Many thanks to all of you for your excellent advice. Sorry I was too dumb to take it.

Ah well, someone has to have a 5D2 - think of it as repayment for sins in another life...... ;)

I must have been a wonderful person in my past lives.... just returned from a wee trip to Grays with a D300s + 17-55 f2.8. Now, I just need to work out what all those little buttons and levers do

Bought my D2X just to use as a second camera, Couldn't really afford it and planned to sell it at the end of summer.

Have to say that I am slowly falling in love with it. I don't know why but I can hand hold it at stupidly low shutter speeds! there are just so many small things that make it a brillant camera.

Not as flexable as the D300.

I have the same with my new D300. I have recently upgraded from d5k, and the difference is just so huge! And it's not only slow shutter speeds, it's the controls, ergonomics and overall feel of the camera. Lovin every moment with it!!!

Good man - great choice of lens BTW.... great sharpness and contrast from the 17-55. Camera choice isn't too shabby either
