Wasn't there a thread on here about this lens, can't seem to find it now?

Anyone got it? thoughts please? :)

Hi! Yup I have one, got it 2 weeks ago, it's v v nice indeed. Feels great to use, optically? About what you would expect! Amazingly sharp from the word 'f1.4' ! Seriously it's so good wide open, focus is accurate, image quality is just the best, expensive? Yes. Worth it? Depends how useful the focal length is to you? But if you like using 35mm, you love it, if you need to know anything just ask or pm mate .

Going to bump this rather than start a new thread. For those that have used both, is there really a grand's worth of difference between the 1.4 and f/2? I really like the f/2 but IQ compared to the 24-70 at the same length means the 24-70 will get the nod. I'm sorely tempted by the 1.4 G but due to the price I'm a bit apprehensive.

If it's the image quality of the 24-70 your after, but in the 35 then the 35 f1.4 g gives you that and more, I ll post some samples to you when I'm back off hold if you like? I had the f2 version but really didn't care for it's harsh bokeh, I mean yes you could really make your subject jump out the frame at f2/f2.2 but the out of focus elements were just a bit distracting for me. The f1.4 g however does the job so much more elegantly. I use it loads, i just love the images it gives me, so yes it's worth it, or at least to me and how I shoot.

Awesome lens, just makes the 24-70 look ordinary. If you want a look/ try of mine you're welcome

Cheers. Hugh I may just do that, or I may just go for it.......

Matthew, if you've got anything you can post up, that would be great, cheers.

I adore the 35G. I bought mine to replace my 24-70. It is sharp at 1.4G but like with all 1.4 glass, you'll need good focus technique to make the most of it. There are supposed to be some samples with major AF problems so do check your copy out, assuming you buy one of course ;)

Have you tried the 35 1.8g? It does vignette on full frame but is easily corrected on post. It's so much lens for the money.

It is good value, but has none of the magic the 35 f1.4 g has, if it's a pro lens he is after, and one that's even better than the 24-70, the f1.8 doesn't really compare.

I've got the f/2 on FF anyway so that isn't an option. I think I've pretty much got my heart set on the 1.4 now to go alongside the 50 and 85 equivalents.

Right, used the f/2 again at the weekend, realised what a great focal length it is so ordering the 1.4 tomorrow. Will keep you posted :D

I'll keep bumping it until you get one.

Ordered, will be with me tomorrow.

Just a quick bump to say don't bother buying this lens. It looks great, feels even better and has the weight of a truly cracking lens.

You'd hate it :D

How does this compare to the 35mm 1.8?

By about £1250 for starters! Not familiar with the 1.8 DX lens though, to be honest on a crop body I'd probably be more inclined to go for the excellent Sigma 30mm 1.4

Well I currently have the 18-55 and 55-200 lenses which I am happy with, but I was thinking of getting either the 35mm 1.8 or 50mm as an xmas pressie... but not sure which would be best... and now I see the 35mm 1.4... hmmmm it's for my D5000.

I think a £1400 lens would be overkill for you right now. Try shooting at 30, 35 and 50 on your 18-55 and see which you prefer.

I would say the nikon 35 f1.8 or the sigma 30mm f1.4 would be best. I've had both, the sigma is nicer optically.

Thanks guys, I will decide which i prefer between the 35mm and 50mm 1.8... they are both miles faster than anything I have now :)

Cant wait to see some samples.
Had been thinking about adding one of the wide primes to my collection.
I love my 85 1.4g

Definitely next on the list, even though I currently have the D version.

I will when I actually get a chance to use it in anger. Got a wedding on Tuesday so will probably be then.

Would you say it worth ditching 24-70 f2.8G for 35 f1.4G?
I've been using 24-70 and loving it especially the ability to go right close in at 70 range. But it's size and weight is really a pain. I've been looking for a replacement and tried 50 f1.4d and I don't think IQ is as good as the beast (IMO). I usually shoot at 24-50mm range. Thanks.

I think only u can answer that, try your lens at 35mm for a while, see how you like it, do you need the large f1.4 aperture? And Is it worth ditching the flexibility of the zoom for?

I couldn't possibly say you should do that, depends on your shooting style really. I like to shoot pretty wide open these days and on Tuesday I did my second prime only wedding and I think I'll be getting used to doing that more in the future. Whether I sell my 24-70 though remains to be seen, for me it's still the best lens that Nikon have and it's too versatile for me to ditch just yet, especially as 35 is the widest prime I have.

That's my biggest dilemma. Only thing I have against 24-70 is it's size and weight to use as everyday lens. I don't want to loose the ability to go wide too. What about keep that lens and get 20mm 2.8d as walk around lens on my d700? Or get 24-120. Or just get use to the beast???
I don't shoot professionally though.

The 35 isn't light, I'd say there's not a huge amount in it between that and the 24-70.

I tried the Sigma and there is no way on earth it is better. Okay, it has the bokeh edge, but it's not as sharp and the focus accuracy is a joke at times.

My 30 was as sharp as a tack and I didn't have any focusing issues to speak of. I guess that's always going to be a problem with Sigma lenses though, inconsistency in the quality.
