weekly NickD's Photo52 Challenge - 2013 - Completed!

pattern works nicely for me - simple shot. nice and sharp on the cut end and the OOF background adding to this. good radial patterns, can't fault the composition - its on a third, small log lower left draws the eye in. Would have been either this or a square on just the large one. think you made the right choice.

movement is great. more about timing than panning. how many trains went through before you got the timing right. :naughty: also liking the inclusion of the underground sign to give no doubt as to what and where it is.

'Ello, Movement, bang on theme and the red front on the train really appeals to me.

Crit, well, it's a tad too tight for me, especially at the front.

Cheers.

Cheers!

I did actually crop it from a wider shot, but there were so many conflicting horizontals... platform, cables, pipes etc, that it confused me in terms of straightness, so I consciously cut it down to what I thought were the essentials. I see what you mean though.

It certainly says movement but as Andy says the crop is a little tight, I dont know if you could have got more distance being on a station platform though

Thanks! As above, I did have a little more to play with, but it was a bit messy.

Movement certainly has movement but it's hard to tell which way its moving if that makes any sense, good colours and focus though.

Cheers... It is an odd effect isn't it? Obviously it was coming in forwards, but it could even be rocking back and forth by the looks of it.

I like how the train just meets the sign on the far wall.

Thanks!

That was the core of the idea really, just the moving train and the static roundel... not really much thought beyond that. I'm sure I could have picked a station that would have allowed for a better shot given a bit more time. I picked South Harrow for no other reason than that's where I had to go to pick my car up!:D

Hi NIck

I think thats a cracking shot for movement & thanks for saying how you did it.....

Cheers!

Very nicely caught Nick... I too like how you can still work out the sign

Thanks! As above, that was the important bit for me. A bit more time to let the idea develop a bit would have helped though. This keeping up lark is tough!

Believe it or not, I only shot two trains coming in as I'd got to pick my car up before the garage closed so I couldn't hang about. Had it on rapid fire though to maximise my chances of getting one right (-ish)!

Hi Nick

Pattern - on theme certainly - good detail, textue and tones. I like the comp and the b/g but just find the half log at the RHS a bit distracting

Movement - good for theme, splashes of colour seem to emphasise movement. Wold just like to see a bit more in front of the tran and the station sign not clipped - but minor points

Below - good simple idea well thought out. Clean focus and colours. Maybe lose some of the table at the top of shot

Hi Nick, looks like a leaflet shot. Nice exposure and light. Focus just as it should be.

Hi Nick, I like your submission for below, a different take on the theme:thumbs:
It tells a little story IMHO, good work!

Thanks chaps... I did struggle with this one, particularly having submitted an underground shot for the previous week... Doh! Kinda worked out ok in the end though:thumbs:

Not like me to get in early, but here goes...

By no means as crisp as I'd like, but I managed to fit a whole church fete into a 6 inch bubble... sort of!:D

In my head at least it's size related, but I included a couple of different sized bubbles too, just to be safe!

Fete in a bubble by NickD71, on Flickr

Thanks for looking!:)

HI Nick, Great idea, the different size bubbles fit the theme as does the whole fete -and Church! - in the reflections.

Colours and exposure look to be spot on, and the shallow depth of field make the bubbles stand out well.

Lovely. - and congrats on being first one in this week

A bit of a lucky spot really. I'm an opportunist photographer for my 52... I'll either grab something in the course of things I do with the family, or try to pop out on my lunch break and grab something. I took a bubble shot and noticed a rough reflection, so hammered off a few similar shots to try and get what I wanted... while pursuing an excited 2 year old!

Didn't realise I'd got in first... Yay!:)

Nice one Nick

Cheers, thanks!:)

:nono: Hey Nick, don't put yourself down mate, the opportunity wouldn't arise if you weren't looking for it AND not everyone would have spotted the possibility and worked it into a great shot.

Must be tough with kiddies to look after too! Extra kudos

Hi Nick

Below....different take on the theme which works well , great use of DOF ...as per Alan , maybe lose the bit of table that's showing ?

Size....didn't spot the church reflection until I read your words...crazy neat idea...love the sharpness of the bubbles , the fab use of DOF

Morning, Below, interesting take. Nice low angle. Paper looks a tad gray.

Small, very nice. Wasn't sure at first then I saw the church. Bet that we easy :D

Cheers.

Pattern: Nice shot, lots of detail and holds the eye well.

Movement: My first thought was WSBK @ Doni too. Really like the shot but like others have said feel it is a bit tight.

Below: Nice take on the theme, like the dof and lighting.

Size:

Its not easy with kids about, i used to have one on reins while at bike racing and panning, fun!

Really like this shot, the details in the bubble of the fete is one element to the theme but having the other sized bubbles in adds to that too.

Nice bubbles I tried that myself last year it was almost impossible you have done a good job on it, well done for getting the church in

DOF and focus and composition spot on for below, looks just OOF to start with, but then as you go down the page ... BAM, there it is. Nice blacks, whites and the marking pen in red adds the final touch...

bubbles I like too - did the "reflection" of the church come out the right way up, or did you have to flip it... just thinking of Iain (blakester) and his crystal ball shots??

Nice focus, can;t have been easy - bet the AF kept trying to go to the trees!!

I did lose the table in one version of Below, but felt it lost the 'homework' context, so I posted a version with it left in. Might mess about further.

It was pretty easy after the first couple of shots, once I realised what to do. Luckily the fella with the bubbles was there for a fair while, so I had chance to faff about.

It can be tricky can't it? I've taken so many racing shots panning with the boy in a sling... makes it pretty tiring. Having said that, it was the reason I first bought a DSLR, so I can't complain.

Nice bubbles I tried that myself last year it was almost impossible you have done a good job on it, well done for getting the church in

Thanks!

I got a bit lucky really. I noticed the reflection in a throwaway shot, and luckily the bubbles guy was around long enough for me to chase a result!

Very clever Nick what an excellent idea, great composition the use of 3 bubbles and love the DoF

Cheers, thanks!

Love the idea, dof and colours

Thanks a lot!

Oddly enough, no flipping was necessary, it seems to work differently to the crystal ball. Focus wasn't a problem really, the light was really strong from behind me (and the church) so the surface of the bubbles was quite distinct. Also, I had my lovely (super cheap) Sigma on, and that hardly ever misses!

Hi Nick

Size - well on theme with bith the relative size of the bubbles and the church within one of them. Well done. Good focus on bubbles and good b/g

Many thanks! :)

Really like the size idea, very nicely done

I like your take on the theme Nick, its got a lot going for it

It has depth too, with the different sized bubbles floating off into the background. The colours, reflections and composition all come together to make a very pleasing imge.

Good work all round

Sorry to have been slow in commenting, Nick. I hope I can get to a few of yours in one go!

Movement: you've pulled off what I attempted and failed at. I found a lot of the time the moving object rather disintegrated (shuuter time too long, I guess). There's the merest hint of that here, but it really does look covincing and the background is solidly sharp!

Below: nicely done, good control of focus and colour to make the point.

Size: an amazing idea, well executed. Great shot, well done that man!

Great idea and great capture, the bubbles look like baubles.

Thanks!

They do a bit don't they? Got lucky with the light behind me, really gave them a solid feel.:)

Shutter speed for Movement was pretty much dictated by the minimum that I could get away with for getting the sign sharp (LUL conditions of carriage state no tripods), which with VR was 1/30. Luckily that seemed to work ok with the speed of the Tube coming in to the platform.

Week 24 - Process.

Back to my 'late lunge' behaviour this week.:D

A bit of a shoehorn job, but I reckon it just about touches on 'process of elimination'... to those of us who grew up before the advent of computer games anyway.

Candlestick in the Study by NickD71, on Flickr

Thanks for looking.:)

Great idea Nick - i had process of elimination in mt mind but couldn't convert that idea to a useful shot...

Great job this week, liking the shallow DOF, and the placement of the characters through the BG, feeling you have got 'just' enough DOF, but might like all the candlestick in focus - there is an area in focus in front of teh candlestick, I would trade for a bit more to the rear... but as we're talking millimetres here, that would be being ultra picky.

Nice one.

I really like this too. Nothing to add, but agree with the DoF comment in relation to focus on the candlestick

You're both entirely right. If I'd taken a bit more time I'd have come to the same conclusion. I'm blaming the focus issues that the D7000 is noted for... Deffo not pilot error... no sirree!:D

I did actually want a shot across a 'Guess Who' board, as I think that would have worked better, but I couldn't find anyone who had the game. I eventually realised I could do the same take on the theme with Cluedo, which we have, but by then I was in rushing mode!:bonk:

Hi Nick

good idea & well placed items ,well lit with great use of DOF to isolate the focus item....all else has been mentioned :)

ps...might be worth sending the D7000 back to Nikon....I did & they fixed the autofocus....only problem is that now I have nothing else to blame for OOF shots

Thanks a lot people! :)

A proper panic move this week, as I leave for Assen tomorrow (Please let next weeks theme involve something that can be tied in to either motorcycles or drunkeness!) . Just got in from packing the bike, during the course of which I decided I have no option but to post something from the few pics I took on Sunday.

Pass me that shoehorn will ya?

Still Rockin' by NickD71, on Flickr

Thanks for looking, and please accept my apologies for the half-arsedness. :)

Hi Nick,

Process, yes bang on theme for me
Dof, composition and the colour scheme all come together well to make this really work.

Rock, again on theme for me, tells a little story simply, yet effectively.

Good work!

I thnk this works well for the theme, "rockers reunion" fitting perfectly, great use of shallow DOF, agree is quite central, but not too central for me.,

Have a good one in Assen!!

Hi Nick

another biker....yayyyyy ( you I mean as opposed to the photo ) ....what's your ride mister ( possibly asked before but memory like a sieve !) Went to Assen for WSBK a few years back , fantastic circuit for viewing with scummy fries n mayonnaise...toilets are a bit strange for lads though  have a great time mister

Not really shoehorned...good DOF as well :)
