Nick T's 52 for 2010 - Week 26 - Beginnings on page 16

Think your self portrait is a little too black and white for me, would personally like to see a few more greys in there with less contrast.

Cat image is my favourite Nick. Cat and pet shots in general usually do little for me but love the composition of this and the DoF used gives it a great feel.

Well done

I see a common theme developing here, and I'm going along with the trend.

SP dark, moody, atmospheric . . . all those good things, but just a little bit (and I really do mean just a little bit) too extreme on the contrast between the dark and light for me.

The cat shot is great though.
I love the high saturation in the grass, the DoF works brilliantly and superb focus on his eyes.
In fact I love the way that the grass complements the green of his eyes.

I like the SP Nick, except for the left eye - just a little too dark where it loses the iris.

The cat shot is great though - lovely colours.

As promised, here's the original, untouched version of the stare self portrait...

And if I process it slightly less aggressively, and slightly more sober, we get...

What do we prefer? Original or this version?

Thanks again for all the comments, and especially the crit this week

The sober edit is a vast improvement in my opinion.

Also, I think the fact that you got the dark half of your face in focus and the light half in the DoF has made the shadows seem deeper (if that makes sense)

Sober wins out on this occasion then! :)

Ian.

Ok... Both shots were with the same lens - the utterly awesome Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS Mark II

:agree:...

anyway...

The cat is a corker... such an intent stare...

The second B&W SP works better for me, I'm not so keen on the blown out bits on the left hand side either... sorry...

That is a great cat shot for Stare :) love the dof and the composition works well, of the SPs the 2nd b&w wins it for me too, looks like there's a story behind that LOOK :)

Oh yes, I was not a happy bunny that weekend ;) Thanks for the compliments

And so on to 'peace'.

I absolutely love doing landscapes some times :D

I think I missed last week's, Nick. I agree with the others - the second B&W SP is best, but still not sure about the left eye.

The cat shot is really good. Love the colours. Both fit the theme perfectly.

Peace - beautiful shots, both of them. I think I marginally prefer the second, mostly because of the rape in the foreground. The colours are glorious. I really must learn how to take decent landscapes. Isn't this time of year wonderful with so much colour around.

They don't shout out "peace" to me, but are very definitely peaceful scenes.

Jenny

Do you know what... I'd like to see a combination of them both.

I've noticed that I like to see "interest" on the left hand "third-line" with the space to the right rather than the other way around. So I prefer the composition of the first shot, but the sky is not as good as that in the second. Worth trying a horizontal flip of the second to compare the two properly?

Also, the second has some good foreground interest going on and a wonderful sky.

If I had to choose, it would be number 2, but give it a horizontal flip and see what you think. No need to post it unless you think it's better :)

Ian.

Thanks Jenny
I was going for the more 'peaceful' scene rather than the expression of peace itself :)

Ian: Will give that a try sometime this week. Thanks for the detailed FB :)

Great colour, clarity and composition.
Certainly a different style of windmill from the norm and certainly looks peaceful. Where is this situated?

" I absolutely love doing landscapes some times "

I'm not surprised, these are wonderful.

Number 1 is my favourite although the sky is a bit more saturated in shot 2. I think it is the angle of the windmill that makes number 1 stand out more. It is more square on in the second.

Andy

Wow both brilliant landscapes.
#1 - I really like the angel of the windmill but in #2 the beautiful blue sky with the yellow flowers works a little bit better

Nick number one is a cracking shot, beautiful colours and well exposed. The sky is great, real good contrast of colours.

Cheers guys  It's funny isn't it. Same subject, take a few steps in a certain direction and you can get two completely different photos :)

Thanks . It's in Chesterton, near Warwick. Down the M69, onto the A46 past Cov, turn left at the airport, go past the old Ryton plant then pick up the Fosse Way. You'll see it as you're driving down. It's on a public right of way so you can just park up and walk over to it. Well worth a visit :)

I absolutely love doing landscapes some times :D

:bang: :bang: :bang: You mean in between the grey skies and incessant rain that we've had for the last 4 days ????
Oh no - you've got blue skies and sunshine there  :dummy:
I've never really tried landscapes - and given the way our weather's been the last couple of weekends I doubt that I ever will

And to top it all off, these are both brilliant too!
Perfectly exposed and pin sharp.

If we're playing favourites I'll opt for the first one. Having the windmill at a slight angle seems to sit better with me for some reason.
I think all the elements seem to work together better in this one too.

As much as I like the second one, I'm struggling to work out whether the image is about the field of rape or the windmill.
The rape certainly has a really strong foreground position, but then the windmill is sat facing square on to the camera bang on the horizon - another very prominent position.
I feel a bit like the two elements are fighting for dominance in this one if that makes sense.

p.s. Second (sober) B&W image for stare is much better IMO.

Stare is a great shot. Think I slightly prefer the colour version, but both are very good.

Also, that windmill shot is wicked. Think I prefer the second one. It really works very well in all ways. Awesome!

2 wonderful shots this week Nick... a tough one... I think the second wins... for the rape in the foreground and the slightly better skies, but I do like the position and angle of the mill in the first...

love the angle and the hills on the horizon so no1 is def my favourite

Peace - No.2 stand out the most for me. Nice Blues in the sky and the yellow just goes so well. Windmill is great,

2 great shots Nick, love the composition of both but that deeper blue in the second one is the winner as it really complements the yellow.

cracking shots there young man!!!

At first glance I said the second was stronger as it lead into the windmill whereas the first was impact then empty space, but after looking over them again, and again, not sure, like the cleaness of the first is great, but I prefer the colour of the second - the yellow flowers in the front competing with the flowers in the back doesnt work so well, to my eye (in the second shot). but there is more for the eye to enjoy.

DRAW ;)

Second B&W stare for me too. Menacing as...

I'd go for the first peace shot too. It's close, but the angle is just so much more dynamic. I love the clean blue sky with the band of cloud on the horizon adding enough interest, but detracting not a jot from the windmill. Very nice work indeed.

#2 image gets my vote Nick but with a few tweaks.
The bottom left hand corner, there's a dark green patch which distracts a little and to my eye, it looks like it needs a slight cw rotation. I am just being picky on what is a fantastic image, which is colourful, sharp and very pleasing on the eye. Cheers iain

Both shots look very peaceful, but I'd go for #1. I prefer the angle of the windmill and the fact that you can see the stonework and the arches more clearly - the windmill is definitely the focus of the picture and the scenery just enhances it.

#2 is also good - I really like the shadows of the sail on the inside of one of the pillars, but it doesn't have quite as much impact imho.

A good take on the theme!

Jean

great SP's (prefer the mono) but have to go with the cat for stare.. great capture of it stalking and fab colours and DOF.. have a soft spot for ginger moggies :)

and wow for the windmills.. both stunning, pin sharp and full of vibrant colours.. think I prefer the composition of the first one.. hard choice though

Evening all :)

Just a quick note from me because there are far too many comments for me to comment individually. I appreciate all your views, and I thank you all again for the great feedback you've given me this week.

Unfortunately, there are not going to be any more photos from me for the next few weeks as I'm off to Cyprus on Sunday for a fortnight. This is why I've been very lax in commenting on others photos this week (as I've had to go shopping with the wife most nights and sort out everything for the holiday!).
I'll try and catch up when I'm back - I've not had a chance to get an 'indulgence' pic this week so I'll likely have three themes to work on when I'm back in the UK.

So - thanks to everyone for viewing the thread so far - and I'll see you all in a few weeks

Have a good holiday Nick!

Ian.

Have a great time Nick

Ok - time for some shoehorns to catch up :D

First off, week 18 - Indulgence.

So - I was in Cyprus, and we went to the village where my Grandad was born, and where my dad considers his second home (due to the illegal Turkish occupation stopping him from visiting Famagusta, where he was born), Leivadia. This is a tiny little village in the Troodos mountains where my family built a little house about 15 years ago. This was the first time I had visited it. The house was lovely, the scenery was fantastic... and the sunrise? Well, that was my indulgence ;)

Sounds idyllic, and looks it too. Although I'm guessing I wouldn't be able to get out of bed that early. A nice silhouette that does make you want to go there.

Lovely.

Ian.

I'm not sure that getting out of bed BEFORE sunrise is much of an indulgence
For me, it would be staying in bed past 7:30 at the weekend that would be a real luxury.

It's a beautiful shot though. Stunning sky and lovely silhouette. It's got a real postcard feel to it.
