Nick T's 52 for 2010 - Week 26 - Beginnings on page 16

Simply Wow Nick. Excellent.

Thank you very much :)

I'm speechless Nick - that's just beautiful.
I particularly like the opening scene of the pier at twighlight

Thanks Sarah - that's my favourite bit too - maybe I should have put that at the end of the video, but after waiting for 35 minutes for my computer to make it I wasn't going to be picky

That's a really clever take on the theme, Nick. Excellent

Looks like it was a successful weekend.

Jenny

Thanks Jenny - yes, it was a good weekend, I got quite a few photos I'm happy with. If anyone wants to see them, this is my thread and I'll be adding more on over the coming days

I produced a video...

It's not the fastest moving most dynamic bit of video I've seen. But I do like the hypnotic effect of the rippling waters. And I'm really just jealous that you have a Mk II. :p

Well done Nick.. that's a bit different and it's bang on theme.

Great video clip Nick.

Just shows that you can get some great video out of dSLRs after all. Well, as long as you're not hoping to do much panning and zooming. Makes me wonder what I can get out of the 500D.

As a hardy northerner I didn't really have much competition. It's very nicely put together Nick even if a little cheesy with the music(in a good way)

Oooh, very nice indeed and it fit's the theme. Who was hiding under the bridge, was there a troll ?

love 0:38 to 0:48 great scene!! do like this, good take on the theme!

Very clever take on the theme Nick, wouldn't have thought of doing this for a theme but might now use it for one in the future.

Spot on!!

;) To be fair - for my first real video I just wanted to keep it to ripply waters - something I could tripod up, hit record and leave it

Thanks guys ;)

If only it was only a troll - no, I suspect it was one of the 50 strong mob of schoolkids which descended on the bridge moments after we got there :bonk:

A nice piece of work Nick, nicely produced and i like the music, i think it fits the scene well.

Thanks all :)

Still unsure what I'm going to do for this week. Will have to think overnight and come up with something. Really want to use one of my nice shiny new lenses but have no inspiration!

Perhaps the vidoe could then have been further advanced with the camera man running from behind the camera towards the bridge waving his arms screaming obscenties at the little b*gger who popped into shot ? :D

Lovely, very inventive nice piccys and music.

The day i aspire to do something like this will be a bloody miracle :lol:

Hah - that would have been a good addition

And so - on to week 13. Do I reshoot something, do I do quad? Well, for now I think I'm going to be doing 'Quad'. After asking the wife for some inspiration she reminded me we had four cats. Job done!

Another throwaway this week really, but it allowed me to do a couple of things I really wanted to do.

  1. Get to use my brand new Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS Mark II lens which arrived last week whilst I was in the Lake District. Lovely lens, it really is :)
  2. Play around with my new Wacom Bamboo graphics tablet and get to learn how to use that

So, that's my submission for this week. I may still go and reshoot 'Speed', but I need to find the time - despite having loads of time off from work I have no time to myself!. If I do reshoot 'Speed' I'm going to try and use the Canon 24-70 f2.8L which also arrived last week... Due to the utter loveliness of the 70-200 the 24-70's not even been on the camera yet!

Cats Nick? Remember the chart :rules: ?

Still, all in all a nice quad of quadrupeds :coat:

This is the second Quad I have seen and I wonder how many pets will appear :D. Well I'm an animal person so I like Cats and Dogs ;), 4 geat shots Nick.

I'm not really a cat person but these are a nice set.

Molly needed to look at the camera and Diesel is a little soft and blown around the eyes. Tabby is spot on. Good lighting and perfectly sharp.

How are you finding the graphics tablet? I'm hoping to pick one up at the gadget show next weekend.

Andy

Cheers mate :)

Aww - lovely cats! Do they all get on?

Thanks - they get on most of the time. Tabby gets a bit annoyed with the others every now and again, but on the flipside she's always the one who will go round, give them a wash and cuddle up with them!

Thanks Andy
You can't tell Mally to do anything - I wanted him looking at the camera but in the end I just had to get an action shot!
Diesel - he's so difficult to get a good photo of what with being a black cat!
I am very pleased with the Tabby one though :D

Oh yes, and the graphics tablet is quite good actually. Went for the Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch for £70.50 from PC World (£89.99 in the shop! Got my iPhone out while I was in there and 'reserved' it ). Got home, tried it out, quickly turned off the 'touch' feature and tried it out. Feels so 'wrong' after 20 odd years of using a mouse!
Had a proper go with it today though and it's starting to feel more natural now, especially for writing. It's something that will take a bit of getting used to, but I can see it making a big difference

I'm a dog person, but these 4 cats look full of personality. The pics are all really nice and varied. Tabby seems to be my favourite shot and Molly looks very interested in something!

Quad fits the theme just fine and each image is full of good detail but what I really like about this set is the way all four images look very harmonious together.
I wonder if that reflects the reality?

Hah, depends on how many of them are asleep at any one time ;)

Thanks for your comments Rob

An excellent take on the theme Nick, a quad of quadrupeds in quad shaped crops :D... all 4 shots are crisp and clear too.

Top cat shots! I've tried to shoot an animal this week and know how tough it can be. To shoot four is masterful.

Not that masterful - it took many more than four shots to get that montage set up I can tell you! Tabby was the easiest to get - she just sits there humouring you. Diesel was the most difficult as he's very black and the camera can't focus on him very well. Mally was too busy trying to rub up against the lens, and Jess was busy hiding!

Good set Nick. I particularly like Tabby as a shot on it's own.

Very nice entry for quad, something a bit different  (and I like it much more than if it had been dogs :D)

Cheers both

And so on to 'Shoot'.
I've had so little time to do this this week, I was starting to think I wasn't going to be getting a shot.

Without further ado.

A bullet, shot from a gun, still smoking.

If that's not 'shoot' enough for you, then here's one from an impromptu portrait shoot I did for a mate of his kids...

See you next week :D

Bullet is amazing, great take on the week theme, nicely lit and the smoke is the cherry on the top.

I'm no good at crit when it comes to people shots, BUT it's good although it looks a little desaturated on my screen.

Point noted regarding the portrait shot  (although the little one really is a pale ******* ;)) Thanks for the positive words about the bullet :)

That's a smokin shot Nick! I like it. How did you manage this shot or was the smoke added after?

Cheers!

Ok - I'll give the game away early this week
Camera on tripod, 5D Mark II and Sigma 105. Interfit EX150 studio lighting with a FITP convertible brolly above and slightly behind camera left. Triggered using the RF602's.
Focus on the bullet, take a few shots, realise it needs a little bit extra.

Run downstairs - get a joss stick and light it. Remember to open windows . Wave joss stick around the bullet and keep taking photos until there's some nice smoke going on!

RAW tweaks as usual for contrast, enhanced blacks etc.

That photo in particular I actually had the joss stick in the end of the bullet, then cloned it out in Photoshop afterwards before doing the B&W conversion.

 great job then and pretty good thinking

The trick has worked very well Nick, that spent case looks like it's just been fired

The portrait looks good too, although I think I'd be inclined to agree on the colours.

Excellent as always Nick.

I am not sure about the smoke though. Do you have a version without smoke? The lighting, compostion and processing is brilliant but I think the smoke is a bit overpowering.

Andy

Great shot of the bullet, and nice idea with the joss stick! :) Lovely portrait shot too, well lit.

Thanks Briony :)

Ok - here's my original thought for the photo...

As you can see, multiple bullets, no smoke, in colour. To me, that looked boring as hell. Others may disagree (as what usually happens ) but I don't like it, which is why I introduced the smoke :)

Really like the smoking bullet, I don't think it's cheating as it is still a shot from the camera and not really manipulated...

Great shot and great lighting as always, well done
