Nick T's 52 for 2010 - Week 26 - Beginnings on page 16

For a throwaway that's excellent. Well done Nick. The one of the 3 against the wall is also excellent...

Appreciated, thanks :)

And so on to Week 5. I really wish these themes were drawn on a Friday so I have more time to get it done as once again this weekend was taken up with wedding appointments (and processing the hell out of a test picture I took of the church) :bonk:.

So, I'm sorry to you guys again, but here's a quick and dirty cliche for you...

<disclaimer>It's not really drugs - just salt.</disclaimer>

Here's another one which I took last Saturday at the Charity do which is quite interesting... I'd call this one 'The Speed of Light'.

I'll get round to commenting on some other threads later on - the wife is now complaining I'm not spending enough time with her this weekend...

Interesting concepts Nick. I was struggling to work out what the first one was until you mentioned drugs. I like the second one though, very well thought out and captured.

I find the first shot very disturbing :D I think it must be the Arsenal emblem :nono: but then again <cough>PAUL MERSON <cough> good connection. Good use of DOF and muted colours.

I like the way the second shot has turned out, gonna give this one my  as it's different from anything else I've seen this week.

Gotta get 'The Arse' in there somewhere <- That's going to be censored isn't it?

What did the first one look like in colour? Any good?

Really light the look of The Speed of Light, think it's a great spot and works well.

Another great week Nick.

Thanks mate. The second was a complete 'play' to be honest. The lovely squiggles was just dust that happened to get caught in the longish exposure

Heh - it wasn't great in colour hence the mutedness - but yep, got to get the Arsenal in there somewhere... not that I've used that membership card for a couple of years!

Cheers regarding #2 - just thought I'd have a play during a particularly boring act at the show
Not sure I share your 'great week' comment. Just hoping for a good theme this week that I can really get my teeth into, because I feel apart from the first two weeks I really haven't produced anything decent, and it's p*ssing me off... :(

The first shot, appears to be a typical theme for this - strange given the possibilities but hey.

The second shot I liked better - it was different made you look and concentrate more as what it was or could be, also liked the title ;)

Yeah, like I say I've completely given up on the 'Speed' week - I had so many good ideas, but just didn't have the time to do them due to work etc. Sorry for the cliche - I think I've really let myself down with this week as I always want to challenge myself and stretch my repertoire, and my 'speed' image is pure horsecrap.

I've got a good idea for 'present' though... hopefully it will work nicely and go some way to making up for two rubbish weeks.

Second one for me Nick.
The first is good, but I've seen so many of these already (my own included) and I think that the second one is so much more original.

No idea how you managed to do it, but it's a beautiful effect and I think you're really selling it short if you're not pleased with it.
Maybe a slightly tenuous link to the theme, but that's my only complaint with it.

Hi Sarah

The first one was just so I could take an image for the week - it was either that or nothing. :(

As for the second - it's tenuous because it wasn't taken for this week's challenge, but thought I could shoehorn it in to make up a bit for the real one I took.

It was simplicity itself to be fair - it was just one big spotlight used to light the stage... the squiggles are just dust particles that were caught in the beam! Because of the longish exposure they came out really nicely :)

the first one looks a bit soft - though maybe you intended that. I much prefer the second which is beautifully simple and conjures up a real atmosphere.

The speed of light shot works for me Nick. I've seen a few drug related speed shots and I think it must be the subject that puts me off. Would be interested to hear how you set the shot up if you don't mind.

Like the B&W conversion too.

Ian.

I don't really have anything of value to add, except that i really like the 'Speed of Light' shot. Kept me staring for ages trying to figure it out :)

Nick, if you spent less time getting smacked up and concentrated on the job in hand(no thats not right) concentrated on your work more, you'd have more time for work and your Mrs:thumbs:....Mick

Cheers Ian - as for the setting up - I assume you mean the speed of light one? As mentioned above it was a simple shot of a high powered spotlight. The streaks were dust particles caught in the beam, and because of the longish exposure and my camera shake it looks like they're oscillating :)

Hi Nick, sorry i have missed your thread so far. I like all the shots up to week 4(which is my favourite) I prefer your second shot for week 5 as it is a unique take on the theme. Well done.

Don't worry about missing my thread - there are so many I've missed too, it's hell trying to keep up with them, and I've neglected other people for the past couple of weeks - so I must make amends :) Thanks for the kind words so far, hope you come back!

Cheers Rich - see above for explanation - it's far too simple ;)

I can see you're going to be the camp comedian at the lakes  Look forward to meeting you :)

Well, as for week 5, I'm hoping to draw a line under it tonight and get my present shot done. I've got the idea, I've got what I need, I just need to get it done - and hope it works, because it's something I've not tried before. This will either work well, or it won't!
But I'm having me dinner first :D

Key board warrior Nick, quite shy and quiet really. Alcohol helps...Mick. And I'm not a bit camp I just help em out if they're busy!

Really like the second pic for speed, very original.

As has been mentioned before, I cant believehow many people shot the first one.

Well done

Dan

Nicely done on both of them Nick... The muted colours and DOF work well in the first one...

I really like the second one... it's got a very mystical feel to it...

Thank you very much - and for the second week in a row you're the last one to comment on my previous week's photo...

For here is week 6 - (A Magical) Present!

4351390073_4db9aa84f1_o.jpg

Inspired by my chum Michael Bosanko, I decided to do my first bit of light graffiti. I took the 'present' theme literally, and decorated the box that my 17-40F4L (a present to myself ;)) came in. A number of small torches with Quality Street wrappers over the front and one long exposure later and here you go...

As always, thanks for looking, and I'll try and comment on as many threads as possible this week.

:)

Oh, and as appears to be becoming my custom - here's another shot. This is the first ever bit of light graffiti I did - which I did tonight, in my back garden, just to see if I could do it!

No - there's no relation to present in that picture - but who cares :D

I like your present a lot Nick.
The colours and compositition are great.
Simple but effective using the sweet wrappers to good effect.
The light trails look 3D:thumbs:

I love your present shot.. nice lighting on the box, fabulous swirly colours and a great idea!..

prefer the 'speed of light' out of the 2 speed shots.. love the little dust squiggles ;)

present is a great shot and that doesnt look like a first attempt at light graffitti!!

Love the light trails - nice shot!

Phil

Love the present idea - great one!

Getting some practice in eh ;). Very good job with the light painting, I think you just need to tone done the lens lust...must be a Canon thing

Another top shot Nick. I completely over looked the gift idea of the 'present' theme and got stuck on time.

Is it okay if I secretly really love the pac man shot and will try to recreated it?

Much appreciated :)

Oh, trust me, it most definitely was - I sent the wife out to buy me some torches that lunchtime, and had to raid the house for batteries - but I like to think it was worth it :)

Love the light trails - nice shot!

Ta Phil!

Hey - if you Nikon chaps had a luxury lens line like us Canon devotees then you'd understand! And yep - got to get some practice in for the camping light trail bonanza

Cheers mate - go for your life with the pac man shot - I'm sure I must have seen someone do it to inspire me to copy it... it's where I get most of my material from anyway

Present is absolutely superb
I LOVE it.

In a finicky girly way, it would have been nice to have some shredded tissue paper around the lens in the box . . . but that's my OCD about gift wrapping talking  It's a brilliant shot!

I like the Pac man shot too. Very inventive . . . but embarrassing confession time - I actually thought it was writing spelling out "Boom" until I read the comments above. I was wondering where that 3rd O came from

Oh! I thought it said Booom too :)

Great idea and well executed Nick. Very colourful and you've controlled the light on the box/lens very well

That's a cracker of a shot Mr T :clap::clap::clap:

And, in my experience, the 'presents' we give ourselves are often the best too :D

Wow, can't believe I haven't come across your 52 yet! Some cracking shots in there. Love the chopped photo! Some nifty PP in that (it better be PP :suspect: ). Really liking street too.

Nick... I'm probably gonna be the last one to comment again :D... It's finding time to go through all the threads...

Anyway... the images...

A good first attempt at that for the Boom image...

That looks a lovely present... I thought the ring looked red even in that light. Very nice, and I love the light painting in it too...

That certainly looks like you wrapped the box,it's scruffy,us men can't wrap. I said, I said, I said wrap not rap.But the theme and photo are spot on, great colour and top marks for the effort you've put into this one....Mick

Another great shot Nick. Very nice work, and an excellent interpretation.

Ian.

Nick, let me begin by offering a swifty bit of advice for your speed shot#1which you referred to as a dirty cliche:
It'd be a lot less dirty if you removed that reference to London's second team ;)

Yes it is cliched - there have been quite a few of these and I bet a fair few of us (including myself) did consider such a shot, and that's the reason why I prefer speed#2. I think the dust squiggles in the beam work well within the theme.
Nice shot.

I loved your present. The colour of the gift wrapping, the overall composition and the colour/positioning of the light trails all make for a fabulous image.
