Nick T's 52 for 2010 - Week 26 - Beginnings on page 16

Missed this one so far. Nice strong colour and the drip is either well set up or a happy accident. Liking a lot

And I almost missed this reply! I know what you mean about missing the threads though - there's just so many people taking part!

The drip - that was a happy accident - I poured a bit too quick and a bit just splashed on the outside of the glass - wouldn't look the same without it though! :)

Ok - week 2, poem/poetry.. First. the poem :)

Frozen Lake, by by Heidrun Paula Emma Kordholste-Nikander
Beautiful is the frozen lake
Don't walk on it, it might break
Ducks are landing on the ice
Tumbling over like a dice
They are sliding on their buts
Someone whispers, do you have guts
To walk on the thin icy layer
Don't do it, not even with a prayer
It is glistering nicer than the stars
Breaking ice doesn't jars
It is ringing sweet like gentle music
Waves are covered, can't make you seasick
But this beauty bears a danger
Don't disregard the warning of the ranger

My photo this week is a winter sunrise at Thornton Reservoir in Leicestershire. Yes, it really is all frozen over!

The first time I've really suffered for my art after getting up at 5:30am to drive down there!

Decided I'd try and get a nice sunrise shot from Thornton Reservoir after I'd seen Simon Gladwin do just that in a photo he had shortlisted for the Leicestershire through a lens competition months back. Unfortunately, the boats that were supposed to be in the little dock, adding some foreground interest were all chained up on shore, and the sunrise I was hoping for was obscured by all the snow clouds :(

Still, was the first trip out with the Canon 5D MkII and new 17-40mm F4L lens so it was nice to see a little sample of what it may be capable of!

I don't think it turned out too bad! :)

That's a very good combination Nick, the poem and choice of location work really well together. Did you use an ND filter to get the sky looking silky, note to self add to wish list. Nice to see you getting up at a proper time :D.

Cheers Scott :)
There was no need for the ND filter actually as it was so dark (relatively speaking) that I didn't need one (plus I don't have any in 77mm size yet so it was just as well!). It's a 30 second exposure which worked out quite nicely in the end!
Proper time! Way too early - I'm usually up at 6:30am, that's early enough for me!

Lovely poem and photo. It must have been freezing outside at that time!
Really good shot. I love the colours :)

Thank you! It wasn't actually that bad - the car said it was 1 degree! Fortunately though, I have loads of thermal gear for when I'm on my motorbike - just made sure to wear it this morning

Nice poem and good photo to go woth it, i think we have some good conditions outside this week that have had alot of poem written about, will be nice to see them all. Good luck with week 3 will be watching

Thanks Jon,
To be fair, I was so stumped this week I resorted to just getting a shot, then googling for a poem to go along with it :bonk:
There really don't seem to be any written about frozen reservoirs so a lake will have to do

Thankfully, my 17-40L turned up this morning - I wonder where this one's going!

Is it me or do all Canon users highlite the L on any lens they own.

Does remind me of something though

#1 - Love the 'contrasty-ness' between the glass and the wine and the little drip completes the image.

#2 - That sky is smooooooth, top job.

Cheers Rob :) I'm pretty pleased with how the previous two weeks have come out... It's bound to all go to pot now!
And you can't beat some smooooooooooth skies :D

Aye, something very emotive about that sky Nick....even if it was taken with one of those inferior L thingies :p

:boxer:
Thanks Yv ;)

The image really suits the poem  shame about the boats and the clouds I don't know how you managed to get your self out of bed to go and stand in the freezing cold!

Cheers Dougie
Wasn't too bad getting up that early really - was fairly warm at 1 degree actually!

Remind me what I was doing getting up that early?

Beautiful shot and very well lit I would have that hanging on my wall any day

Don't you get a buzz being out so early just you and the camera? Works for me every time.

An interesting shot... I wasn't entirely sure what I was looking at to begin with. It's certainly got artistic licence, but again for me I'd prefer a little more clarity/detail.

Actually, I did really enjoy it once I got used to the surroundings and got over the fact I was alone at a reservoir, in winter, with just over 2 grands worth of kit on my back
I'll do it again though, I love the salmon pink of some of the sunrises I've been seeing around here recently :)

Thanks . I myself would have preferred something a little more interesting in the shot, but I was banking on those boats being in the water - I thought a nice sunrise, with the boats and the ice/snow would have been awesome but I was let down in part by the weather, and in part by the people who locked the boats up on the shore! I just didn't want to leave there without getting one shot though!
I'll definitely be going back there and trying the shot again - whether it be for this challenge on a reshoot week, or just for the sheer fun of it :D

Is there anyone else who can't wait for week 3? I'm champing at the bit here!

 Nope.
Only just got my week 2 in, and now I'm trying to look at as many others as I can!
(and with reading the poems too it's taking me twice as long as last week )

Lovely shot from you for week 2
Simple and minimalist but really has some impact. That sky is beautiful and I love the subtle bit of purple that's reflected in the lake.
Not too keen on the vignetting at the top though I'm afraid :( (sorry)

I love your poetry image, I think it's possibly better without boats as it keeps the simplicity of the image, boats might have just added clutter

I'm the same by the way, even though I've only just uploaded my poetry image, I'm looking forward to thinking about week 3!

Very nice Nick, the image works well and suits the Poem.

Thanks Sarah - now I've seen the theme for this week I'm not so enthusiastic! Going to be hard to get an original shot without ripping off 68lbs week one shot! Hmm, thinking required here :help:
Appreciate your comments - and don't apologise for having an opinion (regarding the vignetting) - I don't take any of this personally, only constructively :D

Thanks guys, always appreciated :)

Great image Nick and fits well with the image. top notch.

Hi there Nick. I do remember you, and I can still remember how to say your name too :D

Curves, I really like this kind of shot, crisp and clean and I think the wine drop adds interest, and there are a few curves in there too

Poem, that's such a beautiful, dreamy shot that I'm glad the boats weren't on the water. They would have detracted from the simplicity of it.

There's also an aurora borealis effect going on in the sky.

Cracking start to your 52 :clap:

Woo - my 500th post! Here's to another 500 more :D

Great image Nick and fits well with the image. top notch.

Thanks Dave - I really love 'landscape' photography so I really want to start nailing some good photos now I've got the 17-40 and 5DII :D

Thanks Jill - I'm not surprised you remember the surname as I seem to remember you getting it straight away at the meet!

Thank you very much for your kind words - hopefully I'll keep the standard up over the remaining 50 weeks :D

Incidentally, the inspiration for the photo - which I really love - was http://www.flickr.com/photos/simongladwin/3113368853/

Was toying with getting a 14-40 soon or carry on saving for a 16-35.

Wonderful second week shot and nice to see that you put the effort in to get out there and shoot. I've got this week off, but last week was a nightmare getting time.

Worth the effort indeed.

Ian.

I'm very happy with the 17-40 - cost me all of £390 second hand. For that price I couldn't justify even thinking about a 16-35 (plus I can't see a reason where I'd want f2.8 on a landscape )

:)

Can we keep this thread on topic and stop giving this attention seeker free bumps. :D:D:D

Hi Nick, I've just got round to reading your thread - nothing personal that it's taken me so long.

Week 1: Well done on getting such a nice 'clean' shot. The curves are in all the right places  and I love the vibrant colour of the 'wine'. I can't add anything to the earlier comments - except I do like the drip!

Week 2: This is gorgeous. It might not be what you were expected, but it was most definitely worth getting up so early for. I love the colours, the tranquility and the uncluttered look. A cracking shot. :)

I'll definitely be looking out for your Week 3. :)

Jean

I hadn't really registerd the reference to your surname in your opening post, but now I'm really intrigued!

Hah - it's not that intriguing. The surname is Tsiatinis, it's Cypriot and there's only about 10 of us in the world as far as I know :D
Jill (Bruja) managed to pronounce it as soon as she saw it on my nametag at the convention - most others struggle for ages. The amount of variations we've had... Tsunami, Tzadziki, Cystitis

Shush you :p

Hi Jean :)
Thanks for popping by! Appreciate your comments. As for week 3 - I've got something in mind, hopefully I'll get time to do it this weekend as I've just come home from work ill! Either way - it'll either work and look really good, or it will be very 'meh'... We shall see!

Ok - here's my Week 3 - Chopped attempt.

4298071386_21152e6bc7_o.jpg

Whilst this was my original intention, it didn't quite pan out how I wanted. Originally I was going to go to a local woods, and do the whole head on a treestump, body in the foliage thing - however the rain was absolutely incessant recently and I've had an absolutely stinking cold meaning I've really not wanted to get out :(

But - today I'm feeling a bit better, so I hauled myself out of the house to get a shot. Instead of the woods, I chose a local location, about 2 minutes walk from my house. It's quite a fitting image for the area really, as Barwell has been in the news quite recently for a little spate of murders and death

I know the head doesn't look as good as it should - the clothes I was wearing didn't show enough neck to make the 'cut' good enough :(

Hopefully we'll get a reshoot week, and I'll try this one again :D

Been waiting for this since you said you had a plan.

This is definately CHOPPED/SHOPPED, great idea well executed with high PP skills(much higher than mine anyway)

Get well soon....... WEEK 4 TOMORROW

Great PP'ing. I especially like what you've done with the colour. Gives it more interest in an area that looks like the colours could easily be grey and washed out :)

Really like the gritty processing on your 'Chopped' shot, has a very ominous feel to it but I'm not so keen on the head for some reason, it seems out of place ... perhaps just the way it is sitting.. not sure what exactly it is though sorry. Damn fine pic though.

Tommy.
