In what context? Yes I can see them having some uses.

Locally I have noticed some advertising holdings and iirc a outlets of estate agents using them.

i've yet to see any shops advertising them and lots of people (experts) saying its going to fail big time i was more concerned with security?

iirc maplin sells them. In what way are you concerned about security?

You're maybe confusing nfc payments with nfc tags. a tag can be attached to anything and acts like a fancy barcode. I have a couple of nfc tag keyrings just for the hell of it. I do think that Q codes are probably as good for identifying stuff though.

I thought the tags were used to make payments as we'll ?

Same principle but not tags as you or I can buy. If you're askng do I think NFC payments are a good thing? then no I don't. It's basically a way for retailers to make extra profit by passing the cost of clearing payments on to you. Using a card to make payments the transaction is cleared down a phone line at the retailers expense, using NFC it's done via your mobile so it's you who pays that bill. The data is tiny of course and individually it won't cost much but to a big superstore that passes millions of customers a month the savings could be significant. They're also passing the job of payment security on to you in the same way and for the same reasons.

ahh so the retailer passes on the protection of your data to you and if any thing gets lost its not their fault/problem

I have nFC tags I use with my Galaxy S4. I have one in work, car and home that I 'swipe' which changes specific settings like bluetooth, wifi, volume, apps, etc. It's easier than doing it all manually.

I have a few tags for simply changing settings on my Lumia 1020, I put my phone in the same place when I get in the car so there's a tag that puts it in battery saving mode but puts Bluetooth on for my hands free.

When I walk into the office and put my phone in its cradle it sets my phone on a quiet setting with wifi off Bluetooth off etc

And I have a final one in my wallet (Which goes in the same pocket as my phone) that sets it to loud etc etc.

Really useful and once I got use to them I don't ever have to fiddle with the settings of my phone

may have to look closer in to this as for faffing around with my phone settings every time i get in car work etc is a pain

sounds complicated to me. But I am a bear of little brain. I assume that would work with a sony Xperia Z1...

I am going to get some at some point for changing phone settings.

I got some yesterday and I must say they are very easy to program and set up. Not sure what the wife will say about having them stuck around the house
