It's basically a way for retailers to make extra profit by passing the cost of clearing payments on to you. Using a card to make payments the transaction is cleared down a phone line at the retailers expense, using NFC it's done via your mobile so it's you who pays that bill. The data is tiny of course and individually it won't cost much but to a big superstore that passes millions of customers a month the savings could be significant. They're also passing the job of payment security on to you in the same way and for the same reasons.
