next on the shopping list an i7 (build log - LOADS-O-PICS)

Yay! Looking forward to the build tonight ;)

stripped the old box down yesterday, cleaned and dusted the desk where it is going too... ready to go. needs to be sorted and glitch free for friday, got a 3 day event to cover.

having a slight panic attack that the HSF isnt going to fit.. (ipod classic for size reference)

it better clear the PSU....

Oooh.. Gonna be a squeeze. Certainly not going to fit under the PSU (160mm + 10mm for board/mount + 86mm for PSU is bigger than the 245mm width of the case). You might get away with it rotated 90 deg so it fits alongside the PSU with the fan set to pull air into the heatsink from above (and expell it through the 140mm fan above that). It's going to be tight

yeah thats what i was thinking.

i always struggle to spec HSF on size as you never really know what dimensions you can work to. i wish manufacturers would state this in their case specs.

Isn't it built yet? :p

although im sat here looking at the backplate of my old alpehfohn and it looks like itll fit..

edit - i knew there was a reason i loved my alpenfohn cooler... rev a (out of the old desktop) cooler with a rev b (from the htpc, which came with a 1155/6 backplate) fitting kit :D

it was too big to clear the psu.

got it sorted now though.. nearly done :)

Ahh I see, annoying when that happens or when you install a cooler thats too tall and you can't close the side up grrr

good to hear you have it sorted

Booger.. Hate it when you have to figure out why it's not posting :( (happened to me once that it was the mobo that if you tightened down all the screws, it wouldn't post.... ) Enjoy the beauty sleep - you need it :p :D

yeah, i thought it might be the psu not up to the job first off but ive done a few psu calculators online and they reckon a 300W could handle this hardware.

at least i have all night tomorrow to get it running now its built.

might try and squeeze some pics up before i have to hit the hay..

mmmm not posting....

1. remove MB from chassis, check standoffs and run it on the bench, if still no joy.

2. remove all memory and try the sticks one by one

3. Clear CMOS with jumper to reset BIOS values / check BIOS battery

4. long shot but try re-seating the CPU

This is what I would do in this situation.

Enjoy your beauty sleep, look forward to seeing some pics

tonights episode..

The V354 is, like all Lian Li's I've owned, a really nice looking and well built case.

It's always nice to be given free fans, and loads of room for hard drives (unless you want to ditch the lower cage for a long GFX card).

Even though there are a couple of 2.5" mounts a the bottom of the case I preferred to put mine in the HD cage with a Scythe adapter I had kicking around.

Both drives mounted up in the upper cage.

Not really sure how much cable they expect you to need though..

I did like the adjustable backplate of the Venom, pretty handy and it's certainly well built like its reviews suggest.

However by this point I'm thinking "hmm this ain't gonna fit.."

And no, not even close.. lol

At which point I had a bit of a ureka moment. While the Panorama cooler I had in the old desktop was a Rev A so only had 775 socket mounts, the Panorama I have in the HTPC is a Rev B which came with 1155 and 1156 mounts.. did a quick check for alignment..

Chuck the fan on it..

Clipped the GPU in and started the cabling. One thing with these SFF cases is the lack of cable runs.

PSU sits in really neatly on its padded little stand.

I put the side back on, put the power in and then it failed to POST.

Will pick this up tomorrow..

sussed it.

motherboard doesnt like 4 sticks of the corsair 16gb kit. only boots with 2 installed at a time in 1 and 3 or 2 and 4.

:|

Thats a pain, glad you sussed it, assuming the memory is not faulty, is their a BIOS update for your board to support 4 sticks at a time?

edit removed last bit, I read the post wrong :bonk:

A lot of MB's don't play nicely with 4 sticks of RAM, though i think 8Gb should be plenty

Looks good.

I just bought a OCZ SSD drive last week. 60gb for my Windows 7 and program files. It really has made a difference to my system.

LOL... I see you held it in mind as an important thing to run ;) How does it "feel" though? Fast as you expected? Impressed? Disappointed?

Well as a comparison to the old system lol

To be honest my testing got side tracked so will have a proper look tomorrow. But yeah it feels faster as a first impression, I guess the proof will be when I'm going through a billion photos from the 3 day comp this weekend and see if I get any stutters.

Oh yes.. Welcome to the i7 club ;) :D

Did they not give you a nice little sticker with your i7? :D

I've been following Neil's build as I was contemplating upgrading my PC, which is a self-build in an Antec Fusion HTPC case, about 4 years old. Just for fun, I ran the Photoshop speedtest from the link in the post by Andy (arad85) and now I've stopped contemplating and am going to order the bits to do a re-build, as a Speedtest result of 59 seconds hurts!!

So I think I'll start a new thread soon to showcase my build.

did some load temperature testing tonight..

rough idle temps, i did have a couple things open at the time so +/- a degree maybe

Idle temps by neilgates, on Flickr

loaded at 100% for 20 mins temps levelled out

Loaded temps by neilgates, on Flickr

max of 77c on the cores, not too bad concidering the arctic silver has a bed in period of 200 hours or something so they should drop yet.

'Tis warm today. Mine normally idles at around 30 deg, max 70ish. Tonight, it's idling at between 33 and 37 deg and maxing at 77.

@Cliff... yup... time for an upgrade ;)

its been on all day so i'll turn it off tonight to let things cool down and the thermal compound to cycle. but if its anything like the last build it should drop a degree or two in a week or two.

I had to edit post #2 :rules:

I do like that case. I had one like that a few years ago but it was a cheapo one in cream which kept cutting my hands when I was sticking stuff in it!

This is the bit I miss with most of my kit being Apple ie building my own and modifying it. I like liquid cooling and getting the computer to be virtually silent.

I am toying with the idea of replacing my main Windows PC now that it is being used in the workshop for Eagle, Arduino, C, AVR studio etc etc

it is a really nice case, my only gripe with SFF cases is the lack of space to work in them and the lack of cable management. but lian li do always seem to put out some great cases.. i had the PC-Q07 for the last desktop, got the PC-C37 for the HTPC and now the PC-V354 and theyve all been without fault.
