next on the shopping list an i7 (build log - LOADS-O-PICS)

They'll have it calculating the meaning of life soon...it'd probably be quicker if they'd just read A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy!

high ISO 5Dmk2 RAW files are killing my machine.

that is all.

lol

You'll notice a difference, I have the i7 950 Quad core HT, it's awesome

yeah, might be a while coming yet. dont really have the budget for it without selling off the old bits and i cant be without a desktop for too long.. :geek: (that and the missus wants a holiday)

looks like i'll be stumping up about 200 for new processor, mobo, ram, case and hsf once the old lot has gone. luckily the psu, hd's and gfx can be reused.

not too bad then, what form factor board are you after, ATX or m-ATX?

The reason I ask this, is because Dabs.com are doing package deals at the moment on an i7 CPU, Mobo and RAM.

:)

Tell me about it. Not only did I build this http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=289799 due to 5D2 files (BTW, I benchmarked it the other day with CPU benchmark.net's tool and came in at 11130 which is faster than any stock processor ;)), I've just bought an XPS15 with quad core i7-2630QM in for precisely the same reason... ;)

i7-2xxx is de rigueur these days ;) :D

send me one random raw from 5d2 and I will give it a go on my phenom ;)
last time I was using 5d2 I had e8400 and had no problems with them ...
have you tried using photoshop on ssd ? ( dont remember if u have ssd - but I bet you do ;)

need to get new ssd for myself as now am running on old HD that had old windows installed on it earlier and new one was just installed on same drive and most of the times it drivs me crazy how slow it is ;D

Which Phenom is it? The highest scoring one here: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html is coming in around 6000...

Been there, done that. Not anywhere as fast as an i7-2600k @ 4.3GHz ;)

its not even there lol
its a old good 965BE.
not saying its as good as this i7 but I dont believe in those benchmarks anyway

Neil. Beg/borrow/steal the £500 for an i7-2600k, decent mobo and memory. You won't regret it ;)

I would never in my life spend so much money on cpu, mobo and ram....

just not worth it...for what...one sec improvement ?

not unless I would wim couple mil on lotto

Moving from E8400 at 3GHz to i7-2600K at 4.3 has taken the standard Retouch Artists photoshop benchmark (available: http://clubofone.com/speedtest/) from 28 seconds to less than 10 for me. A near 3x performance improvement is a little more than one sec improvement - especially when I gain that with everything else I do ;)

Oh... and note some of the Retouch Artists benchmark is a serial process, so that multiplier isn't what is achievable for other things. When I'm recoding HD video (I timeshift the Freesat HD channels quite often) I'm seeing 5-6x the performance over the E8400 (which is in line with the benchmark results). That means a two-pass recode of Saturday nights 4 and a bit hours of Glastonbury took 5 hours to process rather than over a day. Or in other words it's moved it from "I can't be bothered to do it" to "I've written a script that does it automatically"....

I admit I'm not the average user though ;) :D

okay current spec is:

Intel Q9550 2.83 / Alpenföhn Panorama 'Low Profile' CPU Cooler
Zotac 9300 ITX Board
Geil Black Dragon 8Gb (2x 4Gb) DDR2-800
OCZ Vertex 60Gb
Samsung F1 1Tb
XFX HD 4650 1GB
LG BD-RE & DVD±RW (external presently)
Lian Li Q07
BeQuiet 480w BN121

high ISO 5Dmk2 files are ripping the arse out of the processor in LR.

yeah, got a few big jobs coming up so might have to wait for that but looking at the 2600k, H61 m-ATX board (not sure on chipsets these days, is the H61 any good?), an "armful" of DDR3 :D. currently that comes to £450 on scan without case and HSF.

looking around i recon i can get about £230 ish maybe a little more for the bits i cant reuse (proc, board, mem, hsf, case).

When I bought, there were two chipsets available H67/P67. With the H67 you couldn't overclock the processor. Only the P67 was able to overclock. Not sure on the H61, but definitely worth checking (especially as you get a 15+% boost for just setting a number in the BIOS).

Also, the m-ATX boards tend to only allow 2 RAM slots, so that may be an issue if you want to go more than 8G in the near future.

ah right, i'll have to read up. the gigbyte board i was looking at was 4 ram slots allowing a max of 16gb

Hehe... You're following the 3 day rule:

  • Day 1: I wonder if buying xxx would improve...
  • Day 2: I'm convinced buying xxx would improve...
  • Day 3: I've bought xxx as it will improve.... Now when will it be delivered?

Happens to me all the time

gah, motherboard, cpu and memory are delivered tomorrow. the case and hsf next week.

:|
Teehee... What mobo/chipset did you go for in the end and how much memory?

stuck with the H61, did some reading and there didnt seem to be much if any downside to it. the older ones didnt support 6gb sata and usb3 but the one ive picked does. the board i went for (mainly for budget) does run 4 sticks of 1333 in 1066 speed though but i cant see that being a problem, if it is then i'll just have to return it or change it later.

Intel Core i7 2600K
Gigabyte GA-HA65M-UD3H-B3
16GB (4x4GB) Corsair DDR3 XMS3

(cue the people saying 16gb is a waste of money)

ooh my case order has gone to pick....

come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow, come on arrive tomorrow...

Can you overclock the H61?

Which board/version?

BTW: I don't ever get above 8G mem used, but the other 8 is always in standby (i.e. cached memory just not actively in use).

yeah definately an H61 and the manual definately has a section on bios option for CPU and memory clocking..

to be honest not overly worried about overclocking at the moment, if it does then great if it doesnt then its something that can be looked at later when budget allows.

So this is what I'm upgrading from - OCUK Build Log - an Intel Q9550 based ITX box.

I am going to reuse the PSU, Hard Drives and Graphics card. So the final spec for now will be:

Intel Core i7 2600K / Akasa Venom AK-CCX-4002HP
Gigabyte GA-HA65M-UD3H-B3
16GB (4x4GB) Corsair DDR3 XMS3
OCZ Vertex 60Gb
Samsung F1 1Tb
XFX HD 4650 1GB
LG BD-RE & DVD±RW
Lian Li PC-V354B Black
BeQuiet 480w BN121

Typically while the processor, board and memory all turned up yesterday the case and processor cooler wont arrive until Monday/Tuesday.

Anyway, for now have a box shot..

Looking forward to your first impressions when you have it built. Have a feeling you'll like the (more than) doubling of performance ;)

Whilst you have your old machine still there, run the Retouch Artists benchmark (http://clubofone.com/speedtest/) and we'll see what it's like on the new one....

i hope so :D

is that the test that does:

Open the Radial Blur dialogue (filters > blur > radial blur) and set:
Amount = 100
Blur Method = Spin
Quality = Best

but in an action?

No, it's more than that (lots of copy layers, couple of blurs, saturation etc...). Download it and run it - it's a 2 minute process (plus actual processing time...)

Expect to be ~11 on the I7 ;)

couldnt sit and look at the boxes any longer so clipped a few bits together..

now all i need is a case and hsf :|

I know the feeling all too well Neil

Its looking good, what case have you ordered?
