Having just upgraded to an EOS 10D from a Powershot compact, I'm in need of some advice for an external flashgun.

I'm mostly going to be using it in low light building interiors and underground bunkers/tunnels. The largest areas I foresee are in the Maginot Line forts (http://www.bunkertours.co.uk/the_maginot_line_metrich.htm) and the submarine base at Balaklava (http://www.weirdomatic.com/secret-submarine-base.html).

So far, the ones I have seen are the Canon 430EX and 550EX, Jessops 360AFDS, Nissin 466, 620 and 622, Metz MZ54, Sigma EF 500 and EF530 DG Super, Yong Nuo YN-460 and YN-465. At the moment, I'm leaning towards the Jessops model. I am new to this, but for my uses, I really don't see much of a difference between the Canon and Jessops models, apart from 7/19 meters less range and possible compatibility problems. I have no need for wireless or master/slave at this point in time.

Any help received would be great.

Thanks
Mike

I can thoroughly recommend the Canon 580 and 430 speedlites (580 is my preferred), but it is possible with your requirements you can do with cheaper options. Sorry I don't have any experience with any of the others.

I had the 10D a few years ago together with the Canon EX580 and it worked really well.

I have the YN 465. I only got it on Thursday, but so far, I am finding it straight forward to use.

I generally take wildlife or landscape photos, as well as family snaps, so I have no need for a flash on the whole. However, I need one for this summer, but couldn't justify spending £££ on one, so bought this. I wanted it for fill flash for portraits this summer, so far it seems to do exactly what I wanted it to. Plus for the price, I will not be upset if it spends all its time living in my bag.

It is the only flash I have used, so I can't offer any proper advice I am afraid.

Do you have a specific budget in mind?

My provisional budget is £120 as that was how much a second hand 430EX is going for at a local shop. I just can't justify that much if one of the cheaper ones is half that and does basically the same things that I want it for.
