New York

Well I'm back safe and sound. I had a few scares while there: My card was declined in an American Eagle store, so I went to try an ATM - nothing! Had to ring my bank here, which was middle of the night over here, luckily their security services are 24hr - sorted it in minutes. They had put a block on my card because there was "unusual activity from the states" on my card. I had told them I was going, but didn't give exact dates, apparently. There's one tip; make sure your bank know you are going - or same could happen you.

2nd scare, lost my passport!! last day there. I only discovered it too after last minute deciding to pop into B&H, went about buying a wide angle lens, asked for ID... passport gone from where I'd left it [in my inside jacket pocket]

B&H were excellent, they rang every store I could remember having been in, but got no joy. When I got back to the hotel [in a fluster] - the concierge tried the stores again, turned out someone had handed it in to Macy's lost & found - phew!

I never lose anything, I'm very careful with wallets/passport/anything important. It was this simple; I'd taken off the jacket in that store because they had the heating blasting, I hung it on my camera back - and somehow the passport managed to fall out. Since you need to have ID everywhere you go, it's so easily done. Be aware of this for NYC especially. Anytime you use your Visa card they will ask for ID, so you can't just put the passport in the hotel room safe, gotta carry it about.

Other than that, great trip, I hope when I go through my 3 folders of RAWs that I find some good images :) I dumped off to the laptop 3 times in 5 days, seemed to be enough. I wouldn't worry about carrying your gear around, the city feels safer than some towns over here. I never felt at risk once. And most times I had the D800 with 24-70 swinging by my hip on the black rapid.

Finally managing to review some photos after getting home yesterday, 900 shots in total.

What a fantastic city absolutely loved it, the people were nice, food was lovely and the sights were outstanding.

B&H is an experiance, what a place!

Kit was ideal but I didnt use the flash, on 1 or 2 occasions I could have done with something in the 85-100mm range but thats me being fussy, what I really could have done with though was better camera in low light, 5D3 is on next years shopping list.

Only downer of the trip for me was the weather, woke up on day 3 to rain and fog which stayed for pretty much the rest of the 5 days meaning I missed out on some shots I'd have liked, fortunately we did top of the rock, Statten island ferry, 9/11 memorial on days 1 & 2.

Awesome photos those! Mine are not going to be at where near as good. :-( I'm still away for another week though before I get home to look at them.

Those are some crackers JRJ, it's interesting to see our differing perspectives on the same city :)

I just checked in here after upping a few of my humble shots to Flickr: We got nice weather for the first 2 days, but then came the rain, and fog: Made for some spookier pics than I intended though.

Thank you, yours are great look forward to seeing some more, I think our two posts show what photography in general is all about, a person's perspective on the world.

Did you use a tripod up the Rock? We arrived and our hotel room wasnt ready so took a walk and ended up doing the top of the Rock couldnt have timed it better for sunset, then remembered my mini tripod was in my suitcase at the hotel! damn it!

Didnt get a chance to walk the Brooklyn bridge, really wanted a shot of the bridge and skyline behind but the weather was crap, seconds after uploading some shots Raymond Lin posted on his facebook page a cracking version of the shot I was after! Oh well guess I've got an excuse to go back

I had the gorrilapod, but could only really use it on the window sill inside, did the job. But lots of reflections to clear up. Most shots I got up there were hand held though. I pushed the lens through the gaps in the glass outside and held the cam up against both sides. You could get away with up to a second exposure this way so long as nobody pushed off you.

We missed out on the bridge too, it was raining and there was a thick fog when we got out to the financial district. The taxi ride took an hour! stop, start, stop ... was just too hungry to care once we got there so went to shack shack. Met Katie Holmes and her kid in there ... plus huge minder ... didn't manage a sneaky pic, I'm not much of a pap though :D

Just arrived home and going through my photos now. Don't think I will bother after viewing these! Just don't know where the difference lies.

Oh yeah, got a pick of that nut case, the Naked cowboy, too -

I don't think that is the original one.

The original one has a tattoo on his right arm, and skinnier.

You may be right, but if you look closely the one I shot has a tat on that arm, it's just turned away in that pose. Also, He's not getting any younger. It would be a daring copy no? To directly copy him, and this was on a bloody cold evening too!

If you look at his facebook page they are all on there but the one I shot is the original one and one where he got tagged most on. I guess he has "fill in" on his days off?

Could well be, it is NYC after all! And we met tonnes of rip-offs and crazies in just 5 days there :D I did think to myself when I seen him "He's put on weight, and I thought he'd be taller!" - as I've seen images of the real guy before.
