Well I'm back safe and sound. I had a few scares while there: My card was declined in an American Eagle store, so I went to try an ATM - nothing! Had to ring my bank here, which was middle of the night over here, luckily their security services are 24hr - sorted it in minutes. They had put a block on my card because there was "unusual activity from the states" on my card. I had told them I was going, but didn't give exact dates, apparently. There's one tip; make sure your bank know you are going - or same could happen you.
2nd scare, lost my passport!! last day there. I only discovered it too after last minute deciding to pop into B&H, went about buying a wide angle lens, asked for ID... passport gone from where I'd left it [in my inside jacket pocket]
B&H were excellent, they rang every store I could remember having been in, but got no joy. When I got back to the hotel [in a fluster] - the concierge tried the stores again, turned out someone had handed it in to Macy's lost & found - phew!
I never lose anything, I'm very careful with wallets/passport/anything important. It was this simple; I'd taken off the jacket in that store because they had the heating blasting, I hung it on my camera back - and somehow the passport managed to fall out. Since you need to have ID everywhere you go, it's so easily done. Be aware of this for NYC especially. Anytime you use your Visa card they will ask for ID, so you can't just put the passport in the hotel room safe, gotta carry it about.
Other than that, great trip, I hope when I go through my 3 folders of RAWs that I find some good images
I dumped off to the laptop 3 times in 5 days, seemed to be enough. I wouldn't worry about carrying your gear around, the city feels safer than some towns over here. I never felt at risk once. And most times I had the D800 with 24-70 swinging by my hip on the black rapid.
