Hey all
Im off to the big apple tomorrow and so thought I'd just come on here to grab some last minute tips from you guys.
Im taking the camera (D90), 10-20mm, 35mm and the 18-105mm that came with it.The tips Im after really are settings tips like what mode would you use (m, s, a, p etc), what white balance setting, what metering mode (spot etc), focus mode (single point, 3d etc) and in what situations would you use these in ? Ive been messing about with the camera alot recently and one problem I cant get my head around is that I was taking a shot of my brick wall in the garden, in the bottom half I had the wall (with a couple bushes at the side) and the top half was the sky.The histogram showed the sky as burnt out,so i under exposed by -0.7 and it was all good except for now the bottom of the photo was too dark. Any ideas ?
All this may be a big ask but I just want to make sure I dont make any major cock ups as its not the kind of place you get to go back to every week.
Thanks so much
Joe

New York:- Sky scrappers, glass, concrete, yellow cabs. People, blacks, brown, white, Hispanics, lots of hustle and bustle. Corner hot dog stalls, business suits, steam rising, coloured lights on bill boards, reflections. This is what I picture in my mind when I hear New York.

Auto white balance, auto everything in fact if you need to ask. Now isn't the time to experiment with what different settings do. Concentrate on looking around and taking shots. Zoom in and out, look up and down and just keep shooting. Aim to fill up your memory with just a few shots left for that world exclusive, million pound earner that happens just as you get back home to your front door!

I think I can say with some confidence that you haven't yet got to the point of considering a backup strategy for your photos? Never mind, probably too late now. So whatever you do, protect your memory cards with your life [or somebody else's]. Put plenty of shots on lots of different cards, and try to split up their locations so if you lose one batch you haven't lost them all.

And eat until you're sick. Then eat some more.

Cheers lads
the memory cards are staying well and truly safe. Ive been playing with me 35mm lately and really like it but I just know that when i take a pic with that lens Im going to be thinking I wonder if it will look better with the other lenses, I always think that and end up at 1 place for ages just swapping lenses, Do you ever do that ? Or shall I just stick with one lens and just swap to the wide angle for stuff like city scapes ? I suppose you just have to trust your judgement ?

I'd recommend shooting everything as RAW - it'll give you far more latitude to make adjustments later on. It'll obviously use more storage - pick up another memory card if you're short of space - they're as cheap as chips over there.

I'd recommend shopping, shopping and more shopping & also the sales which begin on Friday, apparently. I'm soooo jealous, I loved NY.

Have a fantastic time!!! :)

I was in NY earlier this year - - Love the place but watch out for pushy salesmen at the camera shops if you are carrying a camera --they even come onto the street as you look in the window and ask if they can help you ---
Mind you i am not the most patient of people - - but its just nice to look sometimes
Enjoy

Cheers Adrian I'll make sure Im in raw all the time, only way to go I suppose, especially as we dont get to go to a place like that very often to correct my mistakes, which im sure there will be lots of :)

If you like books, the Strand bookstore on Broadway.

If you like art, MOMA and the Met.

I basically wandered around large parts of Manhattan on foot for most of the time I was there, from Battery park up to Central park.
