New Star Trek series is on the way

The new show is called Star Trek Discovery.

STD eh. Someone really didn't think about that did they.

 :$ :D And early concept artwork of the ship itself, apparently an NCC 1031, bears a striking resemblance of a draft drawing of the Enterprise mooted for the "Phase Two" series a decade after the original series ended.

The "new" series never came about but the "spare" story line ended up being used in The Motion Picture.

And here's the concept CGI for "USS Discovery".

If that is the design of a ship in the new series then that is very poor imho.

I haven't read anything about the new series up to now, as I wanted to be surprised. However, it seems like "the show would take on a serialized format instead of an episodic one. The season would play out like a novel, with each episode representing a different chapter, instead of a certain amount of stand-alone episodes that can be watched out of order." Part of the attraction of Star Trek is that you can dip in and out and not feel you have missed too much of the overall story arc. That, and it being only on subscription channels means I won't be seeing it anytime soon after transmission. I also fear that unless they do something amazing, it will struggle to get beyond 1 or 2 series. I hope I am wrong and it is a success.

I've liked all the Star Trek series, some more than others. I'll watch most of them if they pop up on TV, but I wouldn't pay for them. I wouldn't pay for any TV.

Loved the Original, enjoyed TNG, DS9 was ok, Voyager was meh, Enterprise was awful!

Unlike Ian, I loved the film reboots and would be very happy if the new show continued in that vein.

100% agree. in fact for me the new films are more "like" the films should have been, with a little more WOW and less polystyrene...I did like the originals as a kid though.

I'd agree with Fabs up until Enterprise, I thought it was actually quite good. Voyager was the bottom of the barrel I thought, travelling for years towards home but continually meeting the same enemies.

Star Trek started with a wonderful expression of diversity in its cast. Our lead of the show is going to be subject of that same level of who’s the best actor and also what can we say about diversity on the show. We haven’t cast her yet, so we don’t know what level of diversity she will be, but that’s forefront in our minds.

That's all fine and very modern, but seems to have lost the essence of the original start trek "we come in peace and shoot to kill" which was a somewhat gung-ho boys romp, rather than a lesson in acceptance and diversity. It's not necessarily bad, but it's also diluting the originals character still further.

That format - individual episodes fitting into a wider arc - was very successful in Babylon 5.
And with many people now watching TV on demand or catch-up, missing an episode is not really an issue anymore.

Enterprise had the arcing back story, but from the little I have read, the new Star Trek series sounds like it will be different. Time will tell.

Not only has the new series been delayed by months, it ha also just lost its showrunner.

Those looking forward to Star Trek Discovery’s promised streaming debut in May will have to wait even longer. According to the The Hollywood Reporter, the premiere has been pushed back right as production is due to start and CBS finishes casting and script rewrites.

"This is an ambitious project; we will be flexible on a launch date if it's best for the show,” a CBS rep said in a statement. “We've said from the beginning it's more important to do this right than to do it fast. There is also added flexibility presenting on CBS All Access, which isn't beholden to seasonal premieres or launch windows."

premiere this month on CBS, but was pushed back to allow the producers to better “achieve a vision” fans of the franchise would appreciate. Since then, however, the series has been dogged by a slow casting process, as well as the departure of former showrunner Bryan Fuller.

Nevertheless, the series is still forging ahead. CBS Television today announced that Gotham and True Blood star James Frain has joined the cast as Sarek, the father of Spock. He’ll work alongside The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green, who was recently cast as the series lead, as well as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Michelle Yeoh, who will play a Starfleet captain.

Imagine if the wooden Jeffery Hunter went onto being a regular feature in the original series instead of William Shatner. I think it wouldn't even make it to a second series and the whole Star Trek saga could end up just being a small long since forgotten footnote in the world of Sci Fi.

Speaking as a long time trekker, that trailer looked more closer to Star Gate rather than Star Trek. Seems to be too much in the way of kick ass "pew pew" and little in the way of substance - but of course it is unfair of me to say that based on a 1.30 mins trailer. It's just that The Original Series and The Next Generation will always be remembered for their excellent story writing rather than special effects.

Har!

And TBH it doesn't look like traditional star trek at all, but instead owes a great deal to Marvel comics. Perhaps this is what the original ST writes & producers would have liked to create, but it wasn't what they actually gave us to watch. Time to come up with a new name for the franchise.

I don't think the new one seems like anything Mr Roddenberry had in mind.

Trekkie. Sorry, is there even a question about this?

I don't know why Star Trek has to keep going back in time. Why can't they go forward for a change? Or are they running out of ideas for new technology that could be used?

How can anyone not like Star Trek Voyager?!! I mean everyone loved 7 of 9 in her skin tight costumes!!

Captain Janeway with one expression - concerned. It used to annoy me that they travelled for months and years always towards home but kept meeting the same bad guys time after time.

Not sure on the new series yet from what I have read and the trailer. Will somehow ;) have to try and see a couple of episodes when it starts.

I liked Voyager. :)

My order of preference of Star Trek's are:
DS9
Voyager
TNG
The Original Series (so low because I have seen it so much over the years)
Enterprise (taken off before it really had a chance to develop imho)

Episodes 1 & 2 to be shown.
1. The Vulcan Hello
2. Battle at the Binary Stars
