New Star Trek series is on the way

Mmm, just watched the first two episodes. You can see they have spent some money on it. Don't want to say too much for those that haven't had a chance to see it yet, but Klingons, why! :eek: :rolleyes: You may see why I have reacted in that way. I won't say anymore. :whistle:

Overall I liked it, and judging from the preview of what is coming in the series at the end of the 2nd episode, it won't be like any other Star Trek series that has gone before.
 
Can’t say it made me go “wow”, but I’ll keep on watching it and see how it develops.
 
Just watched the first two episodes and this could be really good
 
The scenery and atmosphere is great. They have taken the mandatory alien "head bumps" to a new level.
But the unprofessional comments all the time make the crew seem like a bunch of bitching jerks.

I watched it earlier today Jason Isaacs' captain looks like he could be an interesting character. Which is more than can be said for Burnham's room mate, surely the most annoying person in the universe. I reckon she's Star Fleet's secret weapon - just beam her onto a Klingon vessel and they'll be begging for mercy within minutes.
 
Hmmm, not the way I expected it to go but I like it so far.
 
Each new episode feels less like Star Trek so far, but the series is intriguing, so it will be interesting to see where it goes.
 
The Klingons are driving me nuts. I think their fake teeth are getting in the way of them trying to speak too much. Any Klingon scene just drags on and on and on .

The way they look overall is irritating me, but I know what you mean. :mad: :rolleyes: Third different 'look' to the Klingons. The change from the original series to the next generation was sorted have hinted at as something the Klingon's don't talk about. These new Klingons act in a totally different way too, and seem like a whole new disconnected race.

I do not I like the way the new ship travels and appears in different places. I have a feeling that would have been mentioned at some point over the decades and different shows. I think I can see why they may not continue with that method of propulsion, but we'll wait and see. :thinking: And it doesn't really make sense even taking into account the normal suspension of disbelief that one has to buy into with Sci Fi sometimes.

It has been interesting so far, but unless it gets more 'Star Trekky' I can not see it running for many series. Just mho of course. ;) I hope I am wrong.
 
I think, the "section 31" idea is spot on. Would allow things to happen, without having to stick strictly, to the previous know Star Trek universe.
 
I'm enjoying it so far, i also recommend a new series called The Orville it's very Star Trekesque, with a bit of humour thrown in.
 
Wasn't impressed with episode 4. Someone who should have known better doing something very stupid and getting killed. A navigation system straight out of Frank Herbert's Dune novels. The old Discovery/Enterprise is the only ship in the quadrant that can carry out a mission cliche. And that annoying ginger person still hasn't been killed off yet!
On the other hand it did give us the classic line "My ganglion remain unconvinced."

Yes. The crew are constantly being incompetent in this series.

And the crew bitchin' goes on. Even the Klingons are bitchin' now too! 50% of the dialogue is bitchin'. So some people obviously want that sort of thing.

But actually, that "annoying ginger person" is the only breath of fresh air in the show.

Yes, there doesn't seem to be many happy people up to now. I think that may be setting the story up before it calms down a bit. I know there are a couple of actors I have seen that don't become regulars until about episode 6 onwards according to IMDB. I was looking because I had seen pictures of actors in the promotion who I hadn't seen yet. 'Clem Fandango' from Toast of London is in it. That may mean nothing to most people. ;) :LOL:

The "annoying ginger person" was less annoying in the last episode, but at least she has more of a personality. Most of the other characters are set to grumpy/angry. :rolleyes:
 
Slowly warming to Star Trek Discovery after having binge watched it on Netflix. A bit of an acquired taste but Kirk and Picard will always be my true "fathers". But yes, the crew seem to have a terrible attitude towards each other but hopefully that'll wear thin in time.
 
I think the crew's attitude is meant to be more lifelike, in real life people rip the **** out of each other. Previous series have never really let the crew be human, their relationships were always two dimensional.

If you want to see some dysfunctional crew you should watch a few episodes of The Orville ;)

The thing is that this is set about 100 years after Enterprise, where the characters pretty much treated each other decently onboard. That serving aboard a star ship could have got worse, when the Federation as an entity, and the number of star ships would have increased, is hard to believe. :thinking:

I'm not sure how more 'dimensionable' these characters are so far too. Just grumpy and moody up to now. ;) :rolleyes:

Early days though. :)

redhed17 I meant the actors acting like normal people in a work situation. In 'RL' people crack jokes, are sarcastic, get upset at stupid stuff and a host of other things, previous series of SF have not shown the crew to be 'human' in this way. I find it refreshing.

You could say that about most TV, not just SciFi. It is I would imagine it is hard to write in a naturalistic way.

I think Voyager had a bit more depth to the characters, maybe not the day to day 'banter' but characters were not always happy, and at one point the Captain seemed to be suffering from depression. Another was self harming. Obviously it just touched on these types of things, but good that they went there to give the characters more depth.

I don't have Sky either, but watched the first episode of The Orville last night. :whistle: ;) I think that is more like real life, in that case, in space. That is meant to be a bit of a comedy SciFi, but Seth MacFarlane creates more normal dialogue, and more humorous situations imho. Sometimes he goes a bit OTT, but it seems to be working for him. :)

I know it's nerdy, but holograms, no, not 10 years before the original series. :( :rolleyes:

Just about enjoying it so far, despite the weird character directions / motivations / behaviour, but I'm not sure it's Star Trek. :thinking:

Harry Mudd was a fail I think, the whole stuck in a time loop thing was done and done in earlier series and they didn't do it at all well this time. I didn't enjoy this weeks episode.
 
This week's episode was exciting!! Damn shame we have to wait till next year for the next one.
 
Sulu wasn't a gay character, in fact we didn't even know the actor who played him was gay for many years.

Why not? The F word has been around for centuries, and I'm sure attitudes to homosexuality will be rather different by the era in which ST is set.

Why wouldn't there be gay characters, in a show, that is depicting the lives of a multitude of characters? Can't understand why you would want the fact, that not all people are heterosexual, hidden from family members.
