I would love canon to release a compact with the same sensor, focus and iso of the original 5d with a 50mm 1.4.. No gimmicks no video just a great quality image..with today's technology how hard could it be??
It seems to me that Sony's product planners have definitively identified the person switching from a point and shoot to something with interchangeable lenses as their target market. With the NEX they have eschewed much in the way of manual controls and opted for a dumbed down user interface in an attempt to make the mysteries of camera use that much easier to understand.
It's my opinion that in this they have failed. The green Intelligent Auto setting that Sony has on their other cameras is really all that a beginner needs to be able to stay out of trouble and take decent pictures. The NEX-5 has this as well, but then proceeds to cripple the rest of the camera's user interface with roadblocks and complications, just the thing to turn off the budding photographer because in fact it makes climbing the learning curve tougher rather than easier.
There's a saying – If it ain't broke don't fix it – and in the case of Sony's NEX user interface design I'm afraid that it rings all too true.
Correct this and I believe that Sony has a very strong competitor to the rest. Leave it alone and I believe that the NEX series will be ignored by anyone other than those attracted by the pretty cosmetics and the Sony name.
Yes i read the thing you posted and know about the lack of dedicated buttons and going through menus, but i've also read about with it using the aps-c sensor so it has better quality photos and high iso preformance which makes me that bit more interested in getting it as end of the day surely better quality image is the main thing wanted from a camera.Did you read the thing I posted? Sounds like it's great if you just want to use it in auto but a nightmare to try and do anything else.
I do like the GF1 and the PEN just i wouldn't get same for my money £520 would get me a GF1 and 14-45mm and then image quality isn't suppose be as good as the aps-c sensor :shrug:Thanks for the info i'll have to go out and check it out myself maybe it'll change my mind on getting oneA P have their review of the NEX-5 in this weeks issue and they have given it a lower score than any of the rivals GF1 etc.
But then what do they know?
I'm guessing that they know who spends a lot on advertising with them and it is not Sony?A P have their review of the NEX-5 in this weeks issue and they have given it a lower score than any of the rivals GF1 etc.

True but they are alot smaller and lighter than carrying the likes of a 5D around which defintely wouldn't fit in my coat pocketWhen you stick a lens on these cameras ( gf1, ep-1 etc ) , they aren't really small and their marketable appeal quickly vanishes.

True , but a Nikon D40 / 60 etc is small and light and will outgun these cameras 9 times out of 10.
Or even a Olympus Pen with its built in IS and a 20mm f1.7Forget this Sony. Buy the GF1 with 20mm f1.7.

I have a NEX-3 still pre-ordered with twin lens kit ...but doesn't get released till end of the month
I do like having the tilt screen that NEX series have i used to own a G1 and found the swivel screen ok for the random photo at a very low angle or other height related angles.
Glad see you seem happy with the NEX-5 Teshi![]()
You will be too. Just remember the menu is bounds different from a DSLR setup so takes some getting use to. Wait till you try out ISO 12,800. Very freeking impressed with that.
