Sony has launched the new NEX3 & NEX5 with a NEX7 to follow. It is tiny! but has a APS-C sensor. Looks an impressive bit of kit but for me it pretty fugly!

What do you think and what have you heard about it's image quality?

High ISO performance looks impressive but the lenses apart from the prime are huge, it lacks proper controls/dials, and its FUGLY!!!

Looks odd with such a large lens on it, probably quite hard to keep it steady zoomed out

Had it been around when I bought my GF1 in March I may have considered it if it's size with the prime lens is the same or smaller than the GF1 + 20. The lack of instant access controls would have probably steered me towards the GF1 though.

pointless, far too big for a compact, might as well go the full hog and get a DSLR

IMV, pretty stupid the way the lenses are deeper than the body. Looks nasty to hold. Far better with a compact DSLR (d5k) and lens, much more manageable and better tool IMV

Amazing, a rear lens cap that can take pictures! There's a full review on the Imaging-Resource website. IQ is supposed to be very good, better than some entry-level DSLRs, as is video performance, but the lack of a proper viewfinder is a turn-off for me, even an electronic one would be better than nothing.

Err!
YES!

I think they will sell loads to top-end compact users and those that buy entry-level DSLRs, but probably shouldn't.

Im very tempted to get one myself i don't mind its looks tbh  I've been looking at the deals at Jessops quite abit http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/77673/Show.html?cm_re=RECENTLY-_-110510-_-RecentlyViewed

I have a 5D MkII which i've no complaints about yet at times i like a smaller and more compact camera to take out, i have a Fuji P&S aswell which i rarely touch though its ok for a P&S.
I want something better yet quite compact and the Nex-3 looks good based on its image quality and high iso images i've seen, plus for what you get it looks ok value wise to me

I would have prefered more control rather than the menu based selections and a viewfinder but i suppose they could always bring out a EVF add on later and id be ok with live view till then :suspect:
another preview of the Nex http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/news/462113/in-depth-sony-nex-system-preview.html

Anyone worrid about the looks (enough to start a thread), probably needs to spend more time looking through cameras, not at them tbh!

It seems to be aimed at the P&S market where size matters.

I'd rather more bits to fiddly with, but this is aimed at the P&S / iPhone generation I think.

I would love canon to release a compact with the same sensor, focus and iso of the original 5d with a 50mm 1.4.. No gimmicks no video just a great quality image..with today's technology how hard could it be??

I dunno, I know looks shouldn't matter, but I am kind of in love with my GF1.

I think having a camera that you 'connect with' is good, or something, er....

It would be dead easy, but not very popular. This style of camera has a long way to go before full frame users are likely to accept it, though that's more prejudice rather than technology.

Leica M9? Nobody buys that either.

For people saying the lenses are huge.... they aren't.... it's just the body is so small it makes the lens look big! ;) I wouldn't buy one purely because it doesn't have a hot shoe though :D

ohh !!! I want one. as there is no mirror, this could be alternative for Leica, I assume that it will be quiet and that helps a lot in street documentary photography etc.

It seems to me that Sony's product planners have definitively identified the person switching from a point and shoot to something with interchangeable lenses as their target market. With the NEX they have eschewed much in the way of manual controls and opted for a dumbed down user interface in an attempt to make the mysteries of camera use that much easier to understand.

It's my opinion that in this they have failed. The green Intelligent Auto setting that Sony has on their other cameras is really all that a beginner needs to be able to stay out of trouble and take decent pictures. The NEX-5 has this as well, but then proceeds to cripple the rest of the camera's user interface with roadblocks and complications, just the thing to turn off the budding photographer because in fact it makes climbing the learning curve tougher rather than easier.

There's a saying – If it ain't broke don't fix it – and in the case of Sony's NEX user interface design I'm afraid that it rings all too true.

Correct this and I believe that Sony has a very strong competitor to the rest. Leave it alone and I believe that the NEX series will be ignored by anyone other than those attracted by the pretty cosmetics and the Sony name.

Did you read the thing I posted? Sounds like it's great if you just want to use it in auto but a nightmare to try and do anything else.

A P have their review of the NEX-5 in this weeks issue and they have given it a lower score than any of the rivals GF1 etc.

But then what do they know?;)

Yes i read the thing you posted and know about the lack of dedicated buttons and going through menus, but i've also read about with it using the aps-c sensor so it has better quality photos and high iso preformance which makes me that bit more interested in getting it as end of the day surely better quality image is the main thing wanted from a camera.

Plus being only £520 for the camera with a 18-55mm lens and 16mm also sways me more on the idea of buying  I do like the GF1 and the PEN just i wouldn't get same for my money £520 would get me a GF1 and 14-45mm and then image quality isn't suppose be as good as the aps-c sensor

Thanks for the info i'll have to go out and check it out myself maybe it'll change my mind on getting one ;) is this the right issue just i cant see the Nex mentioned there ? http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/magazine/current.php
also what did they give it a lower score based on ? im assuming need too use menus so much rather than dedicated buttons taking part of lower score :|

I'm guessing that they know who spends a lot on advertising with them and it is not Sony?

As it goes I like the idea and, as I have pontificated on other threads recently, you can bet that as the need to win a dSLR megapixel race recedes the manus are looking at new ways to make money from digital imaging. The interchangeable lens camera is the one that will be developed as the market for volume production of cheap compacts have been effectively lost to phones. Hopefully a 'better than dSLR' will evolve from the competition - and the NEX might be seen as a small step on that way.

When you stick a lens on these cameras ( gf1, ep-1 etc ) , they aren't really small and their marketable appeal quickly vanishes.
True but they are alot smaller and lighter than carrying the likes of a 5D around which defintely wouldn't fit in my coat pocket

The bigger sensor will only really make a difference in low light conditions - and being able to adjust the camera how you want it quickly is surely much more important.

True , but a Nikon D40 / 60 etc is small and light and will outgun these cameras 9 times out of 10.

What does that actually mean?

Mine is here. :)

uber yummy! It packs more punch in person that it does from reviews. I could so use this everyday rather than a 1D mkII!

Bit of a process figuring out the new menu system but IQ and simplicity is just wow.

What everyone needs is a GF1 with 20mm f1.7.

The only thing this camera needs is a built in OVF. It'd then be a perfect modern rangefinder and quality 35mm replacement. Even without an OVF it's still an outstanding camera.

Forget this Sony. Buy the GF1 with 20mm f1.7.

I did consider this one, as well as the Olympus EP1 before I decided on the GF1.. but though the swiveling screen does have its merits, I do not want a camera with a touch screen, especially not if it does not have a viewfinder - touching the screen to use it while having to look at the screen to take the picture just seems like an odd way of doing things.

And indeed - the look of it - the lens having a larger diameter than the height of the body doesn't sit well with me either. It's as if the lens is too big for the body, as if they somehow screwed a 70mm lens on a 46mm thread.

That said, I have not actually tried the camera, so my arguments for not choosing this might be blown out of the water if I had, but that's a thought I prefer not to let linger.

Instead I'll use that time to play with my GF1 :D

Still, when that's all said, I think it's good more manufacturers are coming out with micro four-thirds - competition paves the road to true innovation :)

Or even a Olympus Pen with its built in IS and a 20mm f1.7 ;)
I have a NEX-3 still pre-ordered with twin lens kit ...but doesn't get released till end of the month
I do like having the tilt screen that NEX series have i used to own a G1 and found the swivel screen ok for the random photo at a very low angle or other height related angles.

Glad see you seem happy with the NEX-5 Teshi

You will be too. Just remember the menu is bounds different from a DSLR setup so takes some getting use to. Wait till you try out ISO 12,800. Very freeking impressed with that.

Keep an eye out here

Im going to throw up NEX related photography/videos etc in there as a sample gallery.

Sorry to thread crash but as a new, and very happy, NEX5 owner I just wondered what people were using for a case seeing as Sony dont have theirs ready to ship yet.

V happy with the camera personally .. I'll put my hands up and say that whilst I love taking photos I really cannot be bothered to lug about a DSLR all of the time. I had a D80 & 18-200mm combo and it was just too bulky so I ended up leaving it at home most of the time. The new NEX comes everywhere :)

Cheers!
M

Glad you like your NEX5. I have the GF1 for when i don't want to lug the DSLR about so i'm covered.

I did toy with the idea of getting a NEX3 and still ma still get one at some point as they look fun and image quality looks very good.
