Ok, my brand new toys have arrived and I've taken them out of the box and had a first play and proved they work. However, experience says that it takes an age to get to know the ins and outs of new kit.

So, apart from the straightforward point of getting out and using it, has anyone got any tips on how to really get to know a new lens?

(My new toy is the 70-200 f/4 IS :) , plus a 1.4X, but I suspect the answer is pretty generic whatever the lens?)

Think you've said it yourself ...

the straightforward point of getting out and using it

Just go out and play, take pictures of anything at all (all focal ranges), get used to it and learn how it behaves before using for something important. Most of all enjoy it :)

:agree: Just try everything for yourself - try IS on & off for sports, try the different IS modes, etc. Make sure you have no evident focus issues firstly so as you don't mistake a problem with the lens as user error, etc.
Good luck

The 70-200 f4 is a good lens in normal/lowish light. Give it some good light and you will see the L lens wow factor ;)

If you put the lens on a tripod at all, make sure the IS is turned off!!

I ahd the non-IS version of this and was blown away by the detail (was my first L) and sharpness. the 1.4 will hardly affect it but depending on the body you use the AF may slow down - prefocus manually where you can.

But, as th eothers have said, get out there and play!

As said.. get out there and enjoy

IS is good, but is not a complete solution in all cases, this is a good point to learn.
You can't beat a tripod/beanbag/solid thing in many cases.
