Ok, my brand new toys have arrived and I've taken them out of the box and had a first play and proved they work. However, experience says that it takes an age to get to know the ins and outs of new kit.
So, apart from the straightforward point of getting out and using it, has anyone got any tips on how to really get to know a new lens?
(My new toy is the 70-200 f/4 IS
, plus a 1.4X, but I suspect the answer is pretty generic whatever the lens?)

Just try everything for yourself - try IS on & off for sports, try the different IS modes, etc. Make sure you have no evident focus issues firstly so as you don't mistake a problem with the lens as user error, etc.
