I am thinking of getting the new iMac when it comes out in December however I am torn between the that and the what will be the old one due too the price reduction !

Anybody else thinking of upgrading ???

Oh b****r, just seen the other thread...touchy subject :)

Im waiting till the launch of the new range and then keeping an eye on forums and Apples refurb store. The specs for those are still great enough to handle nearly everything I need and dont NEED the new design one although it does look very tasty.

Im not too big on video editing so my spec just needs to have plenty of ram and large(ish) HDD.

Ive been ready to push the button on a BTO 27" for a couple of months now to replace my 24" machine.

Not happy to lose the disc drive as the whole point of an all in one is to have nothing on the desk, but I can add a blu ray / dvd writer and take more advantage of that screen size increase :)

I'll be looking to add my own ram and would go for the 2gb vram and probably the fusion drive too.

There don't seem to be many imacs coming up in the refurb store, but if a 3.4i7 with the 2gb vram comes up at a good price i'd probably go for that. The reason I held off was that I didn't want to pay full price for 12 month old spec....... money off through clearance might change that :naughty:

The new iMac looks good. Apple seem to want to make things thinner and smaller. Not sure why but it does come up with some really amazing designs. The fact they now laminate the screen to the front glass significantly reduces reflections.it was never a problem for me, but it will stop a lot of people complaining.. The Fusion drive is a good idea. My rMBP has and SSD and my iMac takes an age to boot by comparison.

Trying to find a reason to upgrade my 3 year old iMac but at the moment there doesn't seem to be a significant performance hike to justify the outlay.

Need to seriously look at GPU as the latest version of FCPX makes use of the GPU in rendering and I seem to be getting more short video's to produce. Faster rendering would be an advantage

This was exactly the spec I purchased, although secondhand. It came with 16Gb installed and flies through processing big raw files. I think I saved about £700 off the price paid on 14 June 2012.

Luckily my desk seems to be coping with the additional 3" of screen - but 27" looks far bigger than 24".

I have got imac 27 2011 model with 2 128gb SSD disk ( raid ) One of the fastest computer on this planet. :-))I did upgrade my self. The best is get one refurbished one from apple store and than do upgrade. The speed is amazing. Even the new imac can't beat this

One thing to look at with the new iMac is the ram option, as on the 21 version you can NOT add more ram to it and it only has a 5400 rpm hard drive, ram is user upgradable on the 27"

The lack of an optical drive means very little in the apple world, as it's a cloud based install system now, Mountain Lion is a download only upgrade at 4.6GB, as far as apple are concerned optical drives are old tech just like floppy drives.

Out of interest, is cs6 and lr4 available as digital download?

Or are we going to be forced by outside software to buy a drive anyway?

I am sure that Apple will be able to sell an optical media drive for the foreseeable future. Kind of like new cars now don't always come with a spare tyre - an option you can pay for if you plan to have punctures.

I'd love to do it, but too scared right now.

Both are available as a download from the Adobe site

I'm currently mulling over the purchase of the new 27 when it come out in dec, I'm jumping from a PC, never had a mac but both my wife and I have iPhones, iPads etc so I'm thinking why not go the full hog !!!

I currently use CS5 and LR3, I will be looking at still using CS5 but what other options do I have with regards to LR3 ?

I think your install cd has both mac and pc versions, then you can release the licence from one and use it on the other. When I went windows to mac, I had to upgrade and cross platform change my photoshop licence. Adobe do it, but they'll charge.

Your Lightroom 3 licence is transferable from PC to Mac. You should have both versions on the CD. Just load it ( You'll have to buy a reader unless you can find a download for LR3).

CS5 ,well Adobe won't cross platform an older version of Photoshop. What you will get is the option to upgrade to CS6 . at the upgrade price, but Adobe send you a full version of CS6 for Mac. Contact Adobe customer service, and they'll get you the details. All you need do is when you get you new CS6 id down load from the Adobe site , and use your Licence key to initiate your full version of CS6. However if you've purchased a CD/DVD drive you can simply install it from the disk from Adobe. Procedure with paperwork takes around 10 days

I'm aware of that, I was just thinking if there is anything else to replace LR ???

I use Aperture 3. Available through the app shop.

I used to think Aperture was a decent alternative, until I had to use it last week. I am left disgusted with the lack of many obvious features of all sorts.

Capture One Pro might be something to try as it's the one that gets praise but not one I tested.

Anything else falls very long way behind LR4

Now that is interesting. Like what?

Chris

Many things. For a start I was struggling to see what was RAW or JPEG.

Now for the more serious part: no grad filters, no proper shadow recovery, noise reduction is pants, no perspective correction and so on

download LR trial and see the new possibilities

So what you are saying is that because you don't know how to use it, it's bad? For what it is worth, I like it and it does most of what I need. It is also significantly cheaper than LR4 and a natural extension to iPhoto.

The noise reduction is not the top of the class, but it not totally rubbish at all, for perspective correction and lens correction then the PTLens plugin it perfect, and there are plugins for everything else too.

As said above it's all about learning to use it, and breaking the belief that the only way is the Adobe way.

Without a cd/dvd drive I wouldn't buy one. I still want to copy music from my new bought cds into itunes. Itunes screws up too much to let me trust keeping the one and only copy of music within it.

I've been working with MacBook retinas over the last few weeks, been driving me up the wall having no optical.

Don't think I'll bother. May as well spend a fraction of the money and get an ipad!

NO CD/DVD DRIVE !!!!!!

WTF, that's no good too me, I was not aware of this, how are you meant to use other cd/DVD programmes ????

Copy to USB or you can share the drive in another machine, or buy an external drive..

External drive...off to the apple site to check prices....back from apple store....£65 for the USB SuperDrive !

Bloody rip off

It is, but you can get a DVD writer with blu ray playback capability for under 40 quid.

You can get external drive for £20, so not a deal breaker in my mind, and I guess Apple will retort that many people moaned when floppy drives stopped being put in machines as standard.

It's more the lack of design - you have this wonderfully sleek machine on your desktop but can't even put a CD/DVD in it (let alone a BluRay - but that's another discussion ;)).

I guess it's just another way of making paying for content through iTunes more attractive....

Not really. Almost all software is going download route

I'm aware. But people have something called legacy you know.... and some people just prefer silver disks to having to bootstrap a machine with a USB stick.

I think people will end up with a DVD drive as well (whether it is Apple or not) and it just grates that you have something so sleek, but have to have an external unit to do things. It's not like you can't make slim DVD drives....

Have to agree, spend all that money on a nicely designed bit of kit and then have a el budgeto cd drive hanging off it..

Also agree about legacy, I've spend most of this week ripping our mac software disks. It's not as much of an issue for us as we have tonnes of networked storage but its a two fingers up from apple to legacy users in my opinion. It's also bloody inconvenient when you have 4 retinas to set up for Monday.

Why apple don't spec in a slimline bluray theses days is beyond me, they're supposed to be leaders in media hardware and they're not even up to date on the format.

Is the loss of a DVD drive that much of a deal breaker? Most of the CD/DVDs I used to write were for short term use and now pretty much replaced with flash drives.

For the minimal ripping I do a cheap Bluray player/DVD writer would do and if it bothered me that much, I'd put it in the draw after use. That said, I waited to hear what the new iMac was, then bought an '11 model so Bluray apart, not going to bother me for ages.

Which is the straw that breaks the camels back?

I think Apple are going the way that a PC is an appliance. To me, a PC is about flexibility - it costs too much to be an appliance - I want the ability to do things with it that I hadn't thought about when I bought it and they are just further removing that ability IMHO.

Still, it will get people to buy the next greatest thing when it comes out in 6 months time....

Convenience > design/portability

Bit like the lack of native Ethernet in the retina but that's another thread :)

In my opinion.

Retina has no wired ethernet???

Samsung's chrome book thingies are looking ever more appealing....If I want some thing limited I don't intend paying £1k plus for it. I'll pay £300 and be annoyed on a budget instead ;)
