Hello everyone.

I am pleased to announce my new training course - "Getting The Most from Your Digital SLR - Portraits."

The first course was announced back in January and took place earlier this month. The course is designed to give attendees a thorough understanding of their Digital SLR and how to use the camera/lens to take great portraits.

The course starts with approximately 90 minutes in the classroom followed by a brief shooting demo and then two sessions of on-location portrait photography, with lunch in between. For the two shooting sessions we split into two groups and either myself or my assistant are with you to offer advice and guidance on both the technical and non-technical aspects of portrait photography.

There are two models with us for the day and they are there for you to hone your portraiture skills. I will have an assistant with me to help facilitate the day and to look after one group while I'm with the other. My assistant for the first course was our very own Damien Light (Slimbert).

After the success of the first course I have decided to offer it to all the members of Talk Photography. Although as it happens three members of TP actually attended that course.

The course takes place in Ely, Cambridgeshire and costs £45 per person with a maximum of 12 per course. It is aimed at beginners and amateurs alike and from the feedback I had from the first course everyone took plenty away and felt they had learnt a lot.

The next courses are on Friday 20th April and Saturday 28th April. The Friday course is half full but there are plenty of places available for the Saturday course.

If you have any questions or would like to take part please indicate below or email me directly at ryan@ryanjarvisphotography.co.uk. You can also find out more about the course on my Facebook page - just search Ryan Jarvis Photography.

Many thanks

Ryan

I attended this course earlier this month and have to say it was well worth the money, i come from a film background but new into photography, I already had a good understanding of the theory but was not getting the results I wanted.
Ryan and Damien were very approachable and knowledgable and had a way of getting the information across to all in the class of which there were varying levels of skills knowledge and equipment.
This was my first time shooting models which were both great I was unsure how to direct them at first but a little guidance from Ryan and Damien and I started to get a bit more confident but in fairness the models were experienced enough to know we were all new to this so suggested poses and really helped.

I am really writing this to recommend the course to anyone who is interested in portrait photography but needs a little help and guidance. If you are new to photography or even if you are not, there is something for everyone on this course. I have seen a big improvement in my portraits immediately and have genuinely started to feel excited about the prospects of taking more portraits and using what I learnt.

Ryan has also been available for help and advise even after the course and has given good honest feedback and advise on my shots.

Thanks again for a great course and all your help Ryan I look forward to attending more in the future.

Neil.

Can't agree more with what is written above, and I'm sure all the people on our course also think this.

Booked in on the next course. And hopefully will be a lot more to attend.

I attended Ryan's first course, a couple of weeks ago, and had a brilliant day. I've had some experience with studio and flash shoots, but have struggled using natural light with reflectors, for portraits. As this course was centred around just this subject, I thought it was worth having a go and the cost of the course for a days 'training', represented good value.

Ryan, with some input from Damien, gave an overview of basic camera settings i.e. Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO to start the day off. Then there was some information about depth of field etc. As the group was of mixed photographic ability, this session was pitched about right.

The rest of the day was then spent shooting two models on-location, which was an eye opener to me in itself. I learnt to shoot using the location, in a way in which I wouldn't have thought of before, with some good demonstrations from Ryan.

I came away from the day with more knowledge and, more importantly, more confidence in my ability to use natural light and reflectors. And when shown how to use them, you can see the difference.

I'd thoroughly recommend this course as being great value for money, interesting and also fun. Oh, and Ryan's a nice bloke too (and Damien of course).

Cliff

Just like to say that despite me being biased somewhat, this course is an absolute belter!!

Ryan did a great job keeping things simple for the absolute beginners in the group, while still making it very worthwhile for the more experienced members of the class.....a tricky thing to get right in my opinion!!

I can't imagine a course being better value for money than this one and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting learn/brush up on the basics, and also those looking to gain/increase their confidence working with models etc!! :D
