Hi all,
I'm trying to use a Netgear router (dg834g v5) as a simple switch. From what i can make out the dhcp has to be turned off so it doesn't assign IP addresses to items on the Network. So..I have an ethernet cable coming from my BT homehub into the Netgear router (lan 1) then another going from the netgear (lan 2) to my pc.My problem is accessing the Netgear to make the changes I cannot for the life of me find the IP address of the Netgear!!

Does any of this make sense- what I'm trying to acheive is more ethernet sockets near my main pc for other things-thought it would be simple!!

Help please! Steve

defaults normally include:

192.168.0.1
192.168.1.1
192.168.0.254
192.168.1.254

however if your homehub is on a different subnet you may not be able to access it without manually assigning your pc an IP on the correct range.

Thanks Neil,

Have tried all thos IPs- the 254 one is my homehub. I need to get into the Netgear one but no matter where I connect it to it does not show up! Plus I dont think Im explaining it very well!

If its still got dhcp enabled then just connect your pc to the netgear (disconnect the home hub) you should get an ip from that. Look at the gateway ip in network settings, that'll be the netgear.

Just connect your PC to the Netgear and make sure neither are connected to the HomeHub (including via wireless).

Then open a command prompt by clicking start and then typing cmd and enter.

Next type ipconfig /all and press enter.

The address of the gateway will be the IP address of the Netgear. Enter this into your browser to get to the web configuration page of the Netgear.

Try unplugging the netgear from the bt hub then try 192.168.0.1. I have a number of netgear and they have always been 192.169.0.1.

Sorry a bit slow... :-(

Thanks for all the replies -at my mums for a roast now so will try all those later and repot back!!
Thanks again Steve

The reason you can't access it at the moment is because your homehub has dhcp enabled and that has given the netgear an ip address from within whatever range it set up to do (probably similar to your pc's ip address with a different last number). If you log into the homehub you should see the netgear and the ip address that's been given to it.

You want to set the homehub to give the netgear a static ip address or it could change periodically.

If the netgear is set up as a dhcp server it won't pick one up from the home hub. Routers always default to having a static ip.

I have tried logging into the homehub ans it lists everything except the Netgear-so Neils post makes sense.
God its frustrating! The roast is good tho!

Do a factory reset on the router and then Google the standard IP address for it. Connect to the router directly and you should have no problem getting log into the router.

another alternative... use something like AngryIP scanner. It will scan your network for IP addresses and it should return the netgear's address, however, if it is on a different subnet, you will have to connect to it directly first.
