Deionised water should also do the trick, not as pure as distilled but cheaper.

A lot of my own D&P was done in Dorset where the water made Weegies look like soft southern bassas! We used distilled water which was "appropriated" from the science labs by the teacher who was in charge of the darkroom - he was the chemistry teacher and the labs did the distillation on site so cost was much reduced. Maybe Yv might know someone in the motor trade who could source bulk car battery top up water for her?
