weekly Nat's Photo52 *2012* Week 51 Negative added 25 Dec

I'm playing catch up this week due to not coming up with anything I was happy with for Shiny and won't post the one I have come up with last night 'til I've gone through everyone elses.

Shiny - Nice shot, good use of depth of field, good composition and well exposed.
I like it.

Okay folks, I'm a few days late with my entry for last week.

Week 12 - Magical by C Fredriksson, on Flickr
4 sec (tripod) f/7.1 60mm ISO 200

Week 12 - Magical.

I know this is similar to last week's entry for Shiny but this actually means something to me. One of the most magical things I can think of is a truly great story; one that pulls you in completely and makes you forget about here and now. LOTR is a very good example. I am currently re-reading it for the 3rd time.

The dark reflection/shadow (I believe it's the lens) in the ring bothers me but I have no idea how to lose it.

Edit: new version uploaded 30 Mar 2012 (less of a shadow/reflection)

You've picked up exactly on the one thing that's really bothering me about this shot, ie that dark section of the ring :(

I would think that a white reflector to bounce some light onto the ring would sort it, though you'd need to play about a bit with it to get it right.

Other than that I like the shot, good composition and depth of field and on theme.

Hi Nathalie

love the red in your Magical image....the small spot of black on the ring doesn't bother me...had to look several times to even see it ....ring with it's fab engraving fits the image & totally agree with your thoughts on how a good book draw's you in & immerses you in the tale....nice work

Possibly needs a very very slight rotation to the left ?

I like this one. I agree with Paul about the dark spot but I'm with Lynne in that the it doesn't distract me too much. I like the off centre positioning of the ring.

Nice image Nathalie, the depth of field is just right.I like the vivid gold and red colours. Definitely magical !

Thanks for commenting :)

I've been up to my eyeballs in work the last two weeks but I'm now looking forward to a week off. The plan is to catch up and have Industry, Vice and Entrance done by Friday.

Week 14 - Entrance by C Fredriksson, on Flickr

I photographed a few different entrances to buildings, both old and modern, but I did not like any of them (including this). Basically, it's a door. There's nothing remotely interesting about it. Because I don't want to fall even further behind and risk dropping out, I'm submitting this. If a re-shoot card is ever pulled, this and Secure are the top two candidates.

Edit: New crop uploaded 9 April

Hi Nathalie can you edit the title of your thread, i think the reason you haven't had any response to your post's is that it looks like you've dropped out :):)

anyway on to the photos

Vice yes i can see that, i think maybe the DOV is a little too shallow on this i would have liked to have seen more of the muffin in focus, it looks from here as you've tried to focus between the cup and the bun, and you've achieved that as the cup and the case are sharp, but the coffee and the bun aren't (if that makes sense)

Entrance sometimes you've just got to go for the obvious, the b/w works really well, minor niggle, theres more space on the left than right and i think to work really well it ought to be central in the frame

I always update the thread title as soon as I've posted new photos. You were just a little too quick, that's all. As for the feedback, I was late with Magical and haven't been commenting much on other peoples' photos lately so I'm not expecting a huge amount of comments on mine! I will try and catch up, though.

Its early i hadn't noticed you'd only posted today:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Vice, great idea and on theme but I think you've focussed on the front of the cup rather than the chocolate topping of the drink which would have been better. Well lit though.

Entrance, lovely old door and liking the black and white which helps focus on the detail and texture of the door.
My only critique is that the light when you took it was bright as the shadow at the top of the door's distracting which then makes me focus up there and then realise that you've cropped the top of the arch off too.

I agree - it needs more DOF!

minor niggle, theres more space on the left than right and i think to work really well it ought to be central in the frame
I've uploaded a new version, with the door central.

I was shooting at too shallow DOF really - a bit more and it wouldn't have been a problem. Something to keep in mind for next time.
Entrance, lovely old door and liking the black and white which helps focus on the detail and texture of the door.

I've uploaded a new crop, with more space at the top. As for the light and the shadows, I know what you mean and it's annoying but I wasn't in a position to hang around and wait for either cloud cover or the sun to move enough in the sky. It is what it is: a snapshot!

Vice - like the setup, would just include the whole cup, the front lip is cropped and maybe just expand a little in the bottom left hand corner. Just to get a smidge more muffin in. Nice colours and focus.

Entrance - nice door, there are some really nice entrances around the place begging to be photographed and I think you have found one of them. Nice shot

Week 15 - Soft by C Fredriksson, on Flickr
1/200sec f4.0 60mm ISO200

One of the ideas I had for this week's theme. I have another that I want to try, but it depends on the weather (mainly the winds) and there's no guarantee I'll get it done before Saturday, so for now this will be my entry. I do actually quite like it. The shallow DOF was intentional, but I suspect it won't be to everyone's taste. I did not think monochrome when I shot it (it's a white rose) - I just happened to like it better like this.

HI Nathalie

what a lovely idea for the theme & very soft indeed , the mono suits it well & like the angle so for that  I'd go so far as too say it's the sort of image that would suit a canvas & be sold in that well known swedish home store :)

DOF I think will be marmite....for me I'd prefer slightly more , maybe just enough to get the centre in focus & leave the outer petals oof .Still , no highlights , some nice soft shadows where they should be

Vice....like your thinking & the set up....DOF , for me , needs to be slightly greater...more of the coffee & scrummy looking chocolate bun in focus :)

Entrance....I like this....simple , B&W works well , like that it's offset slightly & that the door seems very slightly ajar....yup , nice image girlie

Fantastic shot best by far this week :clap:

Beautiful, simply beautiful!

Got to say the rose picture is excellent a very simple image but really hard to pull off. It is nicely composed.

Hello....

OK, what have we got....

Magical...liking it. Liking Tolkien  Great composition, nice low angle. Just looks a tad orange to me :thinking:

Coffee and caffeine are personal "addictions" of mine....

Tell me about it :D

Like it..again. Nice and close. For me, though, I'm not keen on the over exposed top section and the DOF is too shallow.

Entrance. Nice. I've done a few of them. Again you got in close and composed well. I'd like to see more contrast and I'm not keen on the shadows.

Soft, I have to say...this is my favourite for Soft...:clap: Composition is spot on DOF has produced great softness as has the lighting. B&W was great choice. Big well done for the one. Do me a favoure...get it printed, placed in a nice frame and....send it to me....:D or get it on your wall

Cheers.

It is more than a tad orange! In reality, the ring is actually titanium and it looks nothing like gold (grey, basically). I wanted it to look like gold, though, and because of the lighting used, it came out looking like - or at least very close to - this. I did a little bit of tweaking in PP.

I agree with you about the DOF. Overexposure -- according to camera raw there are no clipped highlights, but the lighting is slightly uneven and there are areas that are brighter than the rest. The photo was taken by the window with natural light only.

Agreed -- shadows are not good.

Thank you very much, Andy! :notworthy:

Week 16 - Pride by C Fredriksson, on Flickr
1/200sec f1.8 50mm ISO800

One of the things I am proud of: my two cats. This is one of them; Oskar, a male Norwegian Forest cat.

I feel I've done a lot of monochrome lately, but it's not really been by choice... The blanket to the left/bottom of the frame is a very vibrant orange and I felt it was too distracting in colour. With the cats, it's a case of getting what I can, when I can, because like with most cats, they choose to only speak Human when it suits them and they rarely take directions!

Next week I'd like to:

*go full colour
*not use the 50mm
*explore ideas that require much more DOF
*photograph something I don't normally shoot, or
*try a new technique

I feel a lot of the stuff I do is similar... Obviously, because I'm photographing the cats every week anyway for my other Photo52 project, using one of them as the subject for this week's TP theme doesn't help in that respect.

Hi Nathalie, i missed your soft, but its already been said, its just lovely

Pride yes i can relate to this one, and he's a nice boy, great focus on the eye, always difficult with the little darlings, but you've nailed it

Vice - Fantastic Shot... love a good coffee myself too - Your shot makes me want a descent cup !!!!

Entrance - Again a nice image, really like the textures in the right hand rocks

Soft - The softness adds to the soft aspect of the rose in my opinion.. a real nice image

Pride - A lovely looking cat indeed

Nathalie... sorry, trying to catch up...

Vice, works really well, and as a personal vice is bang on theme... i think the DOF works to highlight your main vice in the shot.

Entrance... I love old doors, so this works great for me, and mono suits perfectly

Soft... Very soft and dreamy... the exposure looks spot on, and it works for me

Pride... A lovely looking cat, and the shot is just about purrfect for the theme, cats seem to look prideful a lot of the time. Spot on.

Pride - certainly not easy to get a shot of the critters for sure :D

Nicely exposed and I like the depth of field used and you got the eyes nicely in focus. I can see why you did B&W and it works but it does make me want to see him in colour, but then theres the blanket like you said.

Super looking Cat, I prefer the colour version I think.

Have to say i like the colour version too lovely cat
