Mysteries of our time no 2 - Crisps

NOPE!
You have warped it, You have taken the original and tried you best to make it fit your agenda.......You! and Mr Lineker are pawns of the oppressor! And the other winging one wasnt crying for that other brand, he was crying for Golden Wonder.....

FACT!

The crying add was very funny though

:bat:

Did any of you crispy connoisseurs ever shrink your empty packets in the oven?
Walkers et al have been doing that for years without the aid of an oven ;)

IIRC they've shrunk from an ounce (~28g) to 25g. Not a huge shrinkage but enough. Of course, most of us have grown by a larger amount (in terms of percentage!) than the packets have shrunk. ;)

You know I did a google, and I can't find the decrease in packet size through the years,
it must be there somewhere, but I can't find it.
( Gauntlet duly thrown )

I'm old enough to remember when they were oz and I'm damned sure they were never one oz :(

I can remember when we went decimal and they went from 2d to 2p overnight. I blame the architects of the change over rather than the supervisors of the event!

Really? o_O There's no inherent reason why decimalization should lead to price increases. It was just profiteering shopkeepers. :bat:

Adam Smith had something to say about this... :)

I don't think they put enough lettuce flavouring in prawn cocktail crisps.

Not to mention they've never met a prawn in their life!
My brother used to think there was someone at the end of the production line who wiped a prawn's arse briefly across every crisp :ROFLMAO:

...are you sure it wasnt a prawn coc...nevermind :coat:

I think *they* thought we were stupid and couldn't covert back,
Its amazing the amount of stuff that went up "accidentally" and them of course they dropped the 1/2p and rounded up, not down. ;)

You sure sir? If something was £1.99 1/2p I bet it wasnt rounded to £2. Similarly if "they" ever drop coppers and just have 5p as the smallest, Will it go from £1.99 to £2 or to £1.95, my moneys on the £1.95 , £4.95, £9.95 etc.

if "they" ever drop coppers and just have 5p as the smallest,
That was the excuse for getting rid of the 1/2p "it was too small" ;)
Look at the size of the 5p that'll be on the hit list next !

I take the point about £1.99.5p though.
but 4.5 pwould surely become 5p

Canada did away with pennies in 2012 officially...stopped minting them.
Still legal tender but eventually they'll just "fizzle" out :-)
Once they reach a bank they're handed back to the mint and melted down.

It was exactly the same when the Euro came in. In Germany prices quickly doubled. 1 Euro = 2 DM. What used to cost 1 DM was suddenly 1 Euro. It seemed to go all the way up the chain. With shopkeepers suffering from it as well.

Shouldn't that be Llantrisant?
Quite possibly.
It was from memory and I'm not getting any younger.

Is Llanberis where you walk from to go up Snowdon? (Yr Wyddfa for the Cymraeg)

Just spotted a packet of crisps on the top shelf, it's a green packet hmm lets see now, Cheese and Onion :)

Ah..... Crisps! I fondly remember Chipmunk Oxo crisps which which disappeared from the market many years ago, and I believe might have been a local brand. As something of a connoisseur of crisps (and I've got the waistline to prove it) I have been disappointed with the whole Golden Wonder/Walkers ranges which lacked flavour and, it must be said, quantity - the bags' contents seemed to be getting less and less. Lately I have been impressed with the Real Crisp Company's Cheese & Onion flavour (green packet, incidentally) and Roast Ox flavour which seem to be slightly thicker cut and more strongly flavoured than the mainstream brands. Other recommended brands would include Royster's original, Kettle Chips Sea Salt & Balsamic Vinegar and an honorary mention should go to Guinness Rich Beef Chilli crisps.

Dammit..... starting to feel peckish now.....

Didn't one company used to make Bovril flavoured crisps?
(Going back a bit here mind....)

Chips? How can they call crisps chips? Haven't they seen chips?

TBH, I only know because I noticed them mentioned the other day while looking something else up (did Walkers taking over Smiths lead to them becoming such a big name?)
I also noticed that Golden Wonder did a limited OXO flavour too.

Yep that's the one ;)
(and Llantrisant is where the Royal Mint is . . . we had a school trip there once)

Mmmmmmm yes I remember those too!
Whatever happened to them?

But are they as good as the Chipmunk ones used to be?

Prefer GW to walkers, especially the salt and vinegar, got a thing about tomato sauce flavour, but my favourite is branigans roast beef and mustard

The Chipmunks packaging looks familiar, but I can't say the brand featured heavily in my younger years .... perhaps a little before my time ;)
