Hi

this is my website with a few photos of my hobbie on it what do you think

clickly

people have brought a few.

Anyone else like any

I'd have thouight pictures of people sailing their boats (rather than just the boats) would sell?

I thought site is bit cheap looking and text looks fuzzy & is distracting. images take few secs to load & i'm on 24 meg broadband. Maybe make copywrite mark clear as in some photos its again, distracting.

I like some of photos but they dont shout out buy me.

I fail to understand why, when one owns a domain, does a business continue to use a hotmail address...? Why don't you use your domain name as email...?

how do you do it, i am new to webistes and photography so more help the better.

Well, it depends on your webhosting account. Who do you host with...?

it is only a free website, fotopic

how much does it cost to get a professionally done one with my own domain name.

***what do you think of some of the photos, please have a look***

Pics are good - but I wouldn't of had this on the opening page - sounds a bit amateurish (just my opinion)

"Hi

FIRST OF ALL MORE PHOTOS ARE STILL BEING UPLOADED FROM THE WEEKEND AND IF YOUR BOAT WAS OUT IN THE SOLENT DURING THE WEEKEND NEAR COWES HAMBLE OR PORTSMOUTH IT IS QUITE LIKELY I HAVE A PHOTO"

Personally I would have opened up with something like
PICTURES ARE BEING ADDED DAILY, IF YOU CAN’T SEE WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR PLEASE CONTACT ME

but not first of all .... :shake:

just me though

many thanks i willd o that. it sounds much better.

This is the type of help i need and like, many thanks and i look forward to any more comments.

There's a few questions embedded in those sentences... here's some info.

1 - Domain Name: try www.namecheap.com - have a search to see if the domain you want is available. Prices are around $9 per year for a dot com domain name.

2 - Web Hosting Account: You need to obtain some web space in order to host your account, or if it's just a photo gallery you want, you could alternatively subscribe to a hosting service provider. My site for example is with Zenfolio - they will host all your images, and allow you to get a gallery web site up and running in minutes. You can also add images any time you want to, create new galleries, protect certain galleries with passwords etc - all very easily. You may also want to look into Smugmug - another gallery host. If you choose Zenfolio, then contact me and I can provide you with a referral code which will get you something off the price.

3 - Professional site: Having your own www site designed is an expensive business, and you can expect to pay peanuts and get total crap, or pay good money and get a decent original and unique site. Good money equals anything from several hundred pounds through to thousands.

How's that...?

can you make your own easily and the domain name, if i but it for 2 years after the two years does the price go up or who owns it.

Yes, you can make your own easily enough, though to write your own gallery script is specialist stuff - especially when there's a load of open Source apps doing it for free already. Take a look at coppermine, 4images, etc.

You need to re-register the domain name after whatever period you initially purchase for.

if i do re register will the price go rocketing

if i do re register will the price go rocketing
Nope... you will pay the same price. However, if you know a domain name you can get you will keep... then purchase it for several years.

I have many domains with namecheap, and whenever one is about to expire, I receive an email 60 days prior, and then get charged the same price to renew.

Just don't let them expire as some domain shark WILL re-register it if you don't, especially if it is a domain that was being well used.

so did you say there are free places to get a good looking website produced

No.... there's no free places to get a good website produced.

There are free gallery scripts such as gallery, 4images, coppermine - but these will all need a webhosting account.

It sounds to me like your best bet is to purchase your own domain name from namecheap, then subscribe to Zenfolio for $39 per year - I can get you an further $5 off that. So, for $$42.88 you could have your own gallery www site, with your own domain name, for a year. Zenfolio doesn't have restrictions on the number of images you can upload, and you can have a www site set up and running with a choice of templates in minutes.

So it seems to me that at this moment, this is the best way forward for you. Shout if you want that promotion referral code.

By the way.... nothing in life is free...:)

Hi thanks

but with zenfolio can you produce a resonably professional looking website.

even if it is just from templates.

I want one to look like many of the people personal photographic sites which looks really good

OK, that's it... I get you... you're suggesting that my site looks unprofessional eh...:)

That aside - c'mon, do you really think the professional looking www sites that belong to members around these parts were done for free!!?? They all cost money, decent money.

I am trying my best to give you the best advice I can here, as I said in post 20 here, Zenfolio is your best bet.

Ok thank, but the question i am asking is do i created it myself using templates and things. Do you need to be able to use HTML

many thanks

Music Man

No, if you went with Zenfolio, you don't need any knowledge of HTML. They use a template system, and you choose which template you want to use for your site. You can even set up different templates for use on your site within different galleries if you want to. So, if you have a set of pics re babies, then you can select the kiddie template for that particular collection.

Why not try out their free trial... you can see for yourself then.

ok thanks i think i may do that

zenfolio looks good, and what does everyone think of me getting it as does my website look a bit cheap

should i buy a domain name for 1 year or two?

I dont know if mines amateurish or professional looking but I set it up from scratch 10 days ago, name registration for two years cost just shy of £6 with 123-reg.co.uk and hosting is via directhostinguk.com costs me just over £3 per month. Gallery software was free but takes some fiddling. So it can be done without having to spend masses of money.

Hi

it looks good, are you trying to sell your images. Did you use templates to set it up or did you have to use HTML

There are plenty of company's that use templates to design websites. They're all customisable to some extent.

Zenfolio

Clikpic

Photium (the one I use)

Failing that, Jalbum is a great web-gallery generating program that's free and has many, many professional looking templates. Then it's just a matter of uploading to your hosts!

In respect to your site though,

Don't put any big jpegs on the site as people can rip them off! Nothing bigger than about 200k and 800px on the biggest side!

Frames always look terrible

if you're not confident with the wording get somebody who is to do it. Keep it simple and you wont go far wrong.

Try and stay away from adverts, or at least keep them discrete. They just clutter up the place!

hth?

Hi gandhi

i love your sea side landscapes where were they taken. Yours looks really god. How much does it cost you?

i wish i could do some photos as good as yours

Hi

Thanks :) I will try to sell my images eventually (thats assuming anyone wants to buy them lol) but I need to get the galleries properly sorted out first and clean up a good few images, I'll also roll a paypal system in. I didn't use a template the body of the site its built from scratch using HTML and PHP, neither is hugely difficult if your just doing the basics. The albums are generated by Jalbumn then tweaked a little. As Gandhi notes avoid frames they look awful.

You need a new watermark for your images dude.

do i need watermarks, for my images. Most of them do.

I'd create one with Photoshop and include it on all of the images you place on the web.

i do have watermarks on my images,

ARE THERE ANY THAT DO NOT HAVE THEM

I dont have them on my site at the moment although I have been swithering as to whether or not to add them. I have a personal dislike for them to be honest so I've avoided them up to this point, based on the thinking that if anyone wants a 800px image then good luck trying to do anything with it other than producing a poor small, low quality print.

Unfortunately though, that's enough to often avoid clients placing potential orders.
