Hello everyone,

My camera got stolen while on holiday in Barcerlona and had a lot of photos on which are all lost as they were not backed up which i am gutted about.

Luckly i took quite a few with my mobile which auto backups to google photos.

Is there any cameras which are as good as mobile to backup to google photos, as soon as it connects to wifi it will back them up?

I loved the Rx100 m2 for low light photography the only part i really did not like was not being able to turn the screen for selfies. Are there any good micro four thirds under £300 with a screen which you can flip towards yourself to line up the photo and attach a "selfie stick" to where you press the button and it will take the photo? Looking for the best quality images from a camera which can get in a big pocket and not take up much room. Any recommendations on best value for money ?

Also any recommendations on world wild insurance for cameras please? ( i wasnt insured against theft this time)

Thanks

b****r! Sorry to hear about that, its a great city but I have heard a lot of reports about theft from tourists there.
Cannot offer any advice on a selfie camera, the last thing I want in a photo is myself!

Sorry to hear that, really sucks.

The G7x has a screen you can flip to face forward, not sure about use with a selfie stick though.

+1 for snapbridge. Although I'm not sure they do it with smaller cameras, yet...

The samsung nx mini fits the bill. It has a 1" sensor like the sony but with a selfie flip screen and connects to your phone via nfc. They're discontinued but go used for under £200. In fact some go for not much more than £100. Its designed for people moving on from smartphones so it tries to have all the convenience of one such as touchscreen and i think you can get apps on there.

Sorry to hear about the camera [emoji20]

TBH for selfies the phone would be fine, but I'd replace the camera with something decent otherwise you'll regret not having decent holiday snaps.

I believe the RX100 mk3 might have a flip screen though, and you can use it on a self timer for further out selfie type shots.

A word of advice though, spread your images across multiple cards, even change them once every two days or so (or even everyday if you're on a shot break). That way if it's stolen or lost, you've only lost a small portion of your shots.

Flip over screen Cameras seem to be like Rocking hoss poo, had this dilemma for daughter for Blogging
Eventually found 2

Panasonic SZ10 and the TZ57, TZ57 was what we went with as other cheaper model was out of stock everywhere. Doubt it will work on selfie stick unless you set timer ?

The nx mini has a smile or wink trigger so will work on a stick. Or use the app and trigger from your phone if you prefer.

Seperate insurance for a compact camera seems like overkill. Can't you just get it added to your travel insurance?

Yeah for a compact I'd imagine you'd be covered. Most policies have a £500 limit for camera equipment unless you add it specifically.

Tbh I think I would spend the money on upgrading to an iphone 7 plus. That telephoto lens is compelling.

Sony Nex F3, again discontinued but plenty on the bay.

Not a patch on the RX100.

I'd imagine it's a lot closer than 'not a patch', like it or not.

No, it's not even close, trust me. I have the mk1 RX100, my gf has the iPhone 7. It really doesn't come close in DR, shadow detail, highlight detail, outright resolution and detail, noise control and overall IQ, let alone lens flexibility. I wouldn't have expected it to either. It's good for a camera phone but it's still just that, and there are better camera phones available if that's your thing.

I had both the RX100 and my iPhone 6 (and now the 6s, the 7 isn't really much better in the real world, don't believe the hype) while travelling and the RX100 put it to shame.

And for the price of the iPhone 7 plus (it's only the plus with the second, slightly tele lens and the fake bokeh) you can get a DSLR.

No way could the iPhone 7 achieve these shots, and my 6 didn't come close whilst I was there (only used it for the odd social media shot and to book hotels);

Barcelona and theft go hand in hand. Don't the Police do anything there! The number of stories I've heard and first hand experience of my friend with me being nearly robbed twice in three days. The problem isn't one of having wifi built in but if you want to backup RAW files and video. Most free wifi is pretty slow for huge files.

They really don't give a crap.

My gf phone has given the place the theifs are but will not go retrieve it because a judge will not give them a warrant for such a 'minor' crime

I thought it was covered but this is where our insurance screwed us over

*Has to be purchased new (was eBay used)
*We thought 'electrical items' on the policy covered it but to our own fault did not read through all the small print

Thanks for recommendation is this a 1 inch sensor like rx100. I have a look on Google any my understanding is it is not? '23.4 x 15.6 mm' am I looking at the right thing?

Thanks for your help

Your photos are inspiring truly brilliant!!

Did they come out the camera like this in Jpeg or have you post edited the raw?

Thanks for everyones support and recommendations, will get saving up for a new camera.

Any recommendations on separate camera insurance worldwide please?

Cheers topcat, these were shot raw and processed in Lightroom.

No it's full Apsc so much bigger and better than a 1 inch sensor.

I've had Nex and rx100 and rx10 so I'm not immune to the charms of the 1 inch but bigger is better in this game.

That said, Sony's 1" sensor is as good as some APSC sensors :)

I love the Sony 1 inch sensor and I'll be the first to admit even printed at A3 plus I struggle to tell the difference between my rx10 and A99 (full frame). Both cams since sold.

That is of course at base ISO. Pixel peeping.... Well let's just leave that there! Bigger sensor will always win out though when the going gets tough.

I would just use an iPhone 7 Plus or Samsung S7 Edge or the new Google Pixel instead of the compact camera. They are really truly outstanding these days.

Insurance wise, I'd highly recommend Hiscox and have it on your normal home insurance.

Are they as good as a one inch sensor though ?

It's a common misconception that a camera phone is anywhere near as good as a compact. As per my post above, the iPhone 7 doesn't come near the mk1 RX100, let alone the 2, 3, 4...

Also an iPhone 7 plus is what, £700??

Double post.

I don't tend to measure in paper specs. My core philosophies with photography are that the best camera is the one you have with you, emotion and story over sharpness and technically correct every single time.

I've just done 520 photos as a presentation for my father in laws funeral. Not a single person commented on how technically brilliant or sharp they are; in fact it was the warmth and emotions emitting with the favorites being nearly unanimously both old and current photos from film cameras. No idea what size the sensor is on that one either ;)

There is no right or wrong way, if you prever sensor sizes, pixel counts etc than that is fine. Not for me to judge or change anyone's mind, I'm merely relaying my opinion.

No one said otherwise.

I've just compared a good compact to a current phone camera relevant to the OP. The compact wins for everything, size, IQ, price, usability etc etc.

It's not about paper specs either, no one said that. Have a look at my RX100 mk1 pics further back in the thread. It's about real world shooting and how it can perform (relative to your first post).

And the OP wants something more than a camera phone.
