I've just compared a good compact to a current phone camera relevant to the OP. The compact wins for everything, size, IQ, price, usability etc etc.
It's not about paper specs either, no one said that. Have a look at my RX100 mk1 pics further back in the thread. It's about real world shooting and how it can perform (relative to your first post).
And the OP wants something more than a camera phone.
And yes the current crop of phones can perform really really well as well. If one is in the market for one anyway then cost wise it will actuall work out much cheaper.
Sure it's not for everyone but too me, I just don't bother with a compact as it is still something extra to carry and thus may as well either not and use one of those three excellent phones or carry a larger interchange system. But hey it's just my opinion no need to agree with it, doesn't make it wrong though
