My Nikon D810 Review

Will - did you buy an MB-D12?

If you did, does it flex slightly against the D810 body (when lining up the shot on a tripod)?
It shouldn't. The screw itself is firm and tightens assuringly. There is a metal pin as well as the electronic socket/connection which need to be align. Once looked down, there should be no movement at all. Hope this helps.

Not that I've noticed. Are you sure you have it screwed on correctly and not cross threaded at all ? I imagine not.

I sold the D700/MB-D10 ages ago - but yes, the grip was always screwed on correctly (the thread pitch is too coarse to cross-thread easily)

Anyway, to test yours for flexing:
  • Put the MB-D12 on the D810 and tighten the attachment wheel as much as you can without breaking it.
  • Attach tripod plate to MB-D12 and mount the combo on your tripod - lock the head fully.
  • Grip the D810 body with right hand (without touching the MB-D12 at all) and check for slight forward twisting (i.e. tilt) between the two.

Both my D7000 and D700 have a small wobble using genuine grips. The D7000 is worse. I just figured it was the nature of using an accessory grip.

..... I just figured it was the nature of using an accessory grip.

I think so too - but I just wondered if Nikon has improved the attachment somehow, hence the question to Will.

NB. I'm not sure if Will has a Nikon MB-D12 or a third party version (I can't tell from his pic).

MB-D12 on D800 has a slight bit of play... nature of the beast.

My 3rd party one is absolutely rock solid :)

D810 +MB-D12 still has slight play.
Because the tightening is gear driven I don't think it's designed to lock down 100% tight. Without direct access to the screw (i.e. allen key) the potential for it jamming up and getting stuck would be higher.

Depends how hard you're yanking on it I suppose. I'm not trying to really haul on it, no.. but I can hold the camera by the grip with a 24-70 2.8 on it, and give it a wobble and it's solid. If I need to put force into it, then I think we're being a little bit too fussy aren't we? :) It is a separate device held on with one screw after all.

There's certainly no wobble under any conceivable usage scenario that I can devise.

The reason I mentioned it is that it makes things difficult when going from handheld to tripod without taking the grip off - i.e. trying to line up a shot accurately with one of these attached.

It doesn't matter so much for handheld-only use.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the delay in the delivery of the d810 to suppliers (firmware update?) - still waiting for my 3rd (after sending #2 back), been told by Jessops that they were due a delivery on the 11th but that has been put back to an unknown date and Nikon aren't saying when that will be.

Thermal issue doesn't bother me, but is a pretty big fail if it affects 100% of the camera's.

or it could something as simple as the recent bad weather, who knows. WEX, Park Cameras and Jessops have been awaiting stock for a while, Calumet still seem to have some though.
I suspect they built up a stockpile before release to get them in peoples hands (and prevent people flipping them for a profit). Now that's sold out it's taking time for stuff to come over on the boat.
