Quite scary to read about the Alps plane crash on my phone while sitting at the gate about to fly to NYC less than 2 hours after it happened
then we were staying just 5 blocks from the site of the fire/collapse of the 3 buildings in NYC which happened 2 days later (with my 50th birthday in between). I've only been to America once before and that time we landed on the day of the Boston bombing. I blame my old man, though up to now he's only managed to effect the weather (one heatwave, one tornado, one massive downpour which completely flooded our campsite, one cyclone and another heatwave). Anyway, we had a brilliant time despite it only being sunny on the first day. I woke up the first morning still on UK time so it was 4am. I decided to see what was going on in the world and opened the curtains to see a raccoon staring at me from the window ledge (5 floors up in Little Italy, erm). We got lost quite a lot but I managed to persuade himself that riding the subway was as safe as the Tube and much better than walking to Central park ha ha (it was freezing cold). I didn't have time to do everything and missed out Grand Central Station, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, most of Central Park and Wall St. Still, we loved it there, much cleaner than London, long straight streets and the Americans are unbelievably polite. I've put a couple of snaps on Flickr but the skies were grey so I didn't get the pics I wanted. In fact I took less than 300 pics over the 5 days - I can easily take that many on a 3 hour trip to the zoo
would love to hear your stories about NYC visits, I actually loved it there
