Quite scary to read about the Alps plane crash on my phone while sitting at the gate about to fly to NYC less than 2 hours after it happened :( then we were staying just 5 blocks from the site of the fire/collapse of the 3 buildings in NYC which happened 2 days later (with my 50th birthday in between). I've only been to America once before and that time we landed on the day of the Boston bombing. I blame my old man, though up to now he's only managed to effect the weather (one heatwave, one tornado, one massive downpour which completely flooded our campsite, one cyclone and another heatwave). Anyway, we had a brilliant time despite it only being sunny on the first day. I woke up the first morning still on UK time so it was 4am. I decided to see what was going on in the world and opened the curtains to see a raccoon staring at me from the window ledge (5 floors up in Little Italy, erm). We got lost quite a lot but I managed to persuade himself that riding the subway was as safe as the Tube and much better than walking to Central park ha ha (it was freezing cold). I didn't have time to do everything and missed out Grand Central Station, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, most of Central Park and Wall St. Still, we loved it there, much cleaner than London, long straight streets and the Americans are unbelievably polite. I've put a couple of snaps on Flickr but the skies were grey so I didn't get the pics I wanted. In fact I took less than 300 pics over the 5 days - I can easily take that many on a 3 hour trip to the zoo

would love to hear your stories about NYC visits, I actually loved it there :)

I went a few months back. I wasn't too excited about going, but loved it. Hearing so much Spanish being spoken was a lovely surprise.

My daughter's been there a few times. Probably her favourite city in the US, although she's fond of San Francisco too.

Paragraphs were lost in the luggage on the trip though :D

New York is on my list of places to go, mostly for the history of Street Photography.
So how long did you go for?
Any reason you stayed in Little Italy?
Did you plan your time there, must see places, or just play it by ear?
What would you say is a must see?

I've never been, but you're not the only one to have an eventful trip there.

A work colleague went a few years back for a couple of days' break . . . It turned into a much longer break than she was expecting when she got caught up with all the grounded flights from the Icelandic volcano ash-cloud
I think she ended up with an extra week which was great to finish all the sight-seeing that she couldn't originally cram in, but not so good because she'd only budgeted for a few days spending money and had very limited clothing with her!

I like to travel cheap so I picked a very cheap hotel in Little Italy which was a converted tenement although they used or kept original features so it was quaint and olde worlde - very nice choice too, lovely friendly staff whose names you got to know and had a real conversation with them. Not like the snooty reception you get in big chains.

As Rich says, the place grows on you. It wasn't my first choice for a birthday trip but it was so cheap I couldn't 'not' go. I prefer to go to places that are unusual or that have ancient historical interest, which NYC has to some extent, but I didn't expect to love the place as much as I did :)

I had a long list of places I wanted to see, mainly because I see stuff on TV or in films and think 'I want to go there'. And I love bridges so the Brooklyn Bridge has long been a draw. My old man isn't into photography at all so usually when we go places he moans at me for stopping to take pics all of the time. He gets bored hanging about, bless im. But as this was my birthday trip he said I could treat it like a photography holiday - go where I want - see what I want - and spend as long as I want doing photos. He even came with me to B&H (he was amazed at the place).

There was so much that we missed out that I think we will be going back, especially as my daughter wants to go too now.

Sarah a girl at work was caught out by the ash-cloud too, except she was in Vegas where's she'd just got married, so she had a longer honeymoon than planned :)

lol, not like me - I am still recovering from the flight (is my excuse) :p

Photography wise and straight off the top of my head, I can think of Joel Meyerowitz,Bruce Gilden, Mary Ellen Mark, Elliot Erwitt, Jeff Mermelstein, Boogie and Martha Cooper, Berenice Abbott, Weegee...
Then you've the Museum of fine art, Museum of Modern Art , the International Cenre of photography, in fact so many galleries: http://www.timeout.com/newyork/art/best-photography-galleries-galleries

Trying to see NYC in one visit is always going to be an epic fail.

Its a fantastic place and we are going back again soon, but you didn't mention the must see...... B&H Photo. If only to see the conveyor belts and baskets running around above the floors. :)

Was always on my to do list, not sorry I went but doubt if I will return again.

The trip to Brooklyn, complete with a Brooklyn guide, was the most boring trip I have ever experienced and was 2.5 hours of my life I will never get back!

:)

nope Ian, I did go there (of course) and got me a new bag and tripod, yay

I was taken to New York for my 40th by my wife last month. @Sturismo we arrived on the day of that building explosion / fire that you mentioned!

It's a fantastic place, this trip was my 4th time in NY but my wife and kids had never been before. Managed to fit in a lot of sight seeing & shopping including a trip to B&H photo as well as the New York Motor Show :)
