MWAY speed limit may go up

Oh and don't brake in corners unless you understand the forces acting on the tyres.
I just quoted that in case it was missed earlier, since it's probably the single most important thing anyone has posted on this topic..

Oh and not that it's on the road at the moment, but I have a set of Nankangs for the Imp. They aren't terribly inspiring in grip terms and I can understand where the nickname comes from, so I adjust my cornering speed to suit (like anyone vaguely aware of their vehicle's dynamics would). The thing in their favour is that Nankang still make the 10" and 12" sizes, which most manufacturers don't.

I overtook it the next bend at 60 safely in much lesser car. How ironic.

You overtake on bends. Hmmm....

Feel free to knock ESP as much as you like.

No one's knocking it. We're knocking you, because you seem to think it's essential for braking and accelerating in bends in every day driving, and feel that cars without it are not safe. You do realise that like other markets, car manufacturers have to constantly re-invent the wheel to entice buyers to purchase their wares don't you? It's a nice safety device to have for inexperienced drivers in emergency situations, and I'm quite sure it saves lives, but in every day, normal driving conditions it's utterly unnecessary. Like ABS... it's there for emergencies... you don't use it every day. I can't recall the last time I ever saw, felt, or heard the ABS engage on either of my cars while on a public road. ABS, traction control, stability control... all of these things play no role in normal, every-day, well planned driving. They are there to assist the driver in extreme circumstances, like slamming on mid-bend in an emergency... NOT to play any role in normal driving. Even with these driver aids switched on (probably no choice these days) they will be sitting there idle almost all the time. If you are actually USING these things in normal every day driving, then you're driving like a cock.

The roads are obviously all perfectly dry, perfectly surfaced and you are a robot that never makes even the tiniest mistake. Of course it isn't needed then.

Even on a wet road, on a bend.. if you're at risk of sliding out of control when you need to apply the brakes, then A) You're going too fast for the conditions, and B) as a result of that, you're breaking quite hard. Even my Micra with skinny little, cheap tyres, there's plenty of traction to brake on a bend. If I had to slam on in a bend in the wet it may get a bit hairy, but THAT'S why cars have driver aids... NOT to enable you to drive faster. If you feel having computers monitoring your tractions levels and taking control absolves you of having to drive sensibly, and more worryingly, allow you to drive faster, then you're a liability.

You know nothing about driving.

And guess what - my last post in OOF. Honest.

Missing you already.

Say I have X hours after work. Google maps say X - 1 h. But pensioners make it X + 1h. Clever, innit?

Oh... welcome back.

Since when is "RANT" section of photography forum considered "motoring advice"? Pistonheads or Honest John would be far more appropriate for something serious?

It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with my posts. The fact is all the fun on the road is being irreversibly destroyed by pensioners and greedy misguided politicians. Actually 40 everywhere is sort of fun, considering how dangerous it is in places... I've just tried it tonight - never been that scared since the clio days. Tomorrow's morning commute shall be more hogging - it is my new hobby now. If I get rearended by a racer boy I get to buy my SUV the next day and claim for whiplash.

Do you really think I don't know that? However nobody told me that in driving lessons; I guess they don't anymore. Nobody seems to know that as it seems everybody brakes inside the corners and then nearly come off the bends. Eg. Brand new C-class in front off me nearly left the road at 36mph in a bend and I overtook it the next bend at 60 safely in much lesser car. How ironic.

You moan about congested roads, do you really expect to be able to make much more progress in a big SUV? I'd say complete opposite. You'll be wishing if you had a smaller car you could have got through that gap.
You consider the roads to be dangerous, I agree, they are where you are, if you are overtaking cars on bends.
Don't spend all your whiplash compensation on your SUV will you? You'll be needing the extra money for the next 5yrs for the loading on your insurance as you've been involved in an accident. :)

That's one of the first things you learn when learning to drive. The answer to the question "what causes skidding" is not wet roads, ice, etc. as many give as their first answer but it is excessive braking, acceleration and steering.

The fact that so many people.. people utterly convinced they know how to drive, do not know this, scares me.

As my husband used to say " It's the other b****r on the road you have to watch out for "

ever come across a wee river stream on the road or an unexpected pothole? There are plenty here. In theory that is enough to cause skidding if you weren't going in a straight line.

I couldn't care less about some bloody gap :) on the road. I want luxury, comfort and sheer brute force to scare micras away. I also need tons of boot space so I am afraid this is not up for discussion.

Non fault claims make very little difference to insurance premium. I am very grateful to an 85 year old pensioner for the chance to find out first hand 4 years ago.

You overtake on bends. Hmmm....

If visibility is good - why not?

Yawn....

If they weren't convinced, they would be scared to drive. This would make them even more dangerous. Do you want that?

Like I said... useful in unexpected, and extreme circumstances. You seem to be trying to tell us it's essential to drive normally, and also essential to avoid congestion. Clearly the ravings of someone who knows nothing about driving.

Yeah... a German auto-barge... dead scary mate.

I drive a Nissan Micra 95% of the time... I must have a MASSIVE penis :) .
Mine's long and red (y)
(so's the car :D )

...........The slowest point is the point of turn in to the corner and then a constant and then increasing throttle accelerates the car through the corner in a balanced and controlled way. That has always been safe driving.
But "booting it out" and "opposite lock" is much more fun :D
(I'm talking RWD here for the yung'uns)

That just suggests you don't know the road and you are travelling too fast and not reading the road ahead. Again your inexperience about anything motoring related astounds, yet you still like to think you know better.
Over the last 5yrs, I've had two reasonably quick performance models of family cars, both have had ESP and both get driven enthusiastically yet safely, in all that time the ESP has only ever come into play twice.
Perhaps it's a good thing there are so many pensioners slowing you down, it will be making the roads that little bit safer from you.

..

To be honest you sound like the typical agressive idiot in a big car that tailgates me in my yaris when i stick to the speed limit

And guess what - my last post in OOF. Honest. It is quite obviously a complete waste of time I should spend in a more productive ways like hogging the roads and writing this direct to council / government.

So, is it just me, or does this mean something different in daugirdasland?

Why. It's ace. I'm so glad I started it.

Ace? Have I stepped through a secret tear in the fabric of time back to 1983? :cautious:

I'm going for a drive in a school zone. Hopefully I'll learn something like tackling speed bumps at a faster speed

I've just realised you're just trying to get a response!
I'm slow on the uptake today !
my excuse is I'm on nights
Where's that ignore button:D

Your definition of enthusiastically obviously differs from mine:D

Don't its too much fun. I love this thread.

If you are properly serious, you and I might even get on :D

Just don't get caught...dibble, no scratch that, the polis don't like speeding, commited driving. Even if you are overtaking pensioners in Micras round a bend on good year tyres.
I've been caught a few times in my more enthusiastic past, but I just took it on the chin:p

That was good fun. Now off to practicing doughnuts in the hospital car park :)

All your stupid driver aids will probably prevent you from doing that. Buy a proper car :)

Your definition of enthusiastically obviously differs from mine:D

It's very easy to drive fast and enthusiastically without having to break the speed limit, break traction, or be a nuisance to other road users and still drive safely.

The tons of boot space, that wouldn't be somwhere to store all your quality motoring woes advice and ideals, would it? That poor head of yours must be getting overloaded.

I lost 5 perfect sunsets to 20 plenty scone hunters in the last 2 weeks. And my only (non-fault) accident was also caused by pensioner. And they get away doing 40 in 30 or school zones. Nothing personal... just dead annoying.

Leave earlier. Or head out in the mornings for morning golden hour, the roads are quiet then.

Agreed. I prefer sunrises to sunsets. Much lower chance of finding other people around.

it is more uplifting too. There's something special about the start of a new day, rather than the end of an old one. Not only is there less people, but you are fresh, and whilst the dread of work hangs over you, you've used the best part of the day to do something special. Plus, I know the locations the he likes. They are the best in the AM golden hour.
