Week 12 Magical

IMG_3869bs.jpg

Hi Mike, The rainbow photo is lovely and bang on theme - rainbows are so magical!!

I like your sundial shot - its a great abstract photo but think the rainbow hits the theme more!!

Lynne, Sarah, Gramps and Peter. Many thanks for the comments of encouragement.

Thanks especially Peter for the 'well seen'. That is one of the things that this challenge is really helping me with - looking for, and finding pictures when and where you don't expect.

Mmm, I think I prefer number one as I the lighting is much better (what did you do? I'm rubbish with portraits) although maybe just a little more bottle needs to be visible!

Now could I be wrong in thinking that's a cheeky dust bunny in number one on her right cheek?

Vice

No 1 - You look like your on top of the subject, a little oppressive perhaps ?. Think she would be looking up at you if you were that close. In addition, her pupils don't look constricted so the image isn't believable for me.

No 2- Like the focus on the bottle, she is looking at you with contempt, one eye closed, the other half open suggests drunkenness. Looks like she is about to tell you where to go. I think this is the better image as it looks more realistic. Bang on theme for 'Vice' nice work

Nick

i prefer number one the fact she is looking away from the camera helps its as if she is hiding the fact she is drinking.

On another note how on earth did you capture that rainbow :D xx

Marsha, lighting was a real problem - I was in the garden with the sun disappearing behind the house. Used a reflector picking up what sun there was.

Capturing the rainbow involved running along the beach to put myself in the right position - so that it looked like the rainbow emerging from the rock.

magical is well, um, magical  good job you can run fast! as for vice I prefer 2 as she's OOF and the bottle is more prominent - good shots for both though

In #1 the bottle is really 'in the way' so it's #2 for me

Number 1 for me as the lighting and the focus on the drinker makes it while allowing you to make out the fact it's a bottle of grouse.

I would say though it's a little tight at the bottom and if the bottle was more in the orientation of the second shot it would be even better.

Thanks everybody for all the useful comments. More or less an equal split in preferences for #1 and #2. I still can't make up my mind, but purely on the basis that #2 looks better when printed, I am going with that one. I'm printing all my 52s pics as I go along on 4x6 paper and intend to bind them into a little flipbook kind of thing at the end of the year.
This week was really interesting for me. I learned a huge amount. I have never used a model before. (The girls were friends not 'models' but you know what I mean.) Nor had I ever used a reflector. Was really challenging, trying to sort out the spot for the photos with suitable background, get the lighting right, worry about exposure and focus and DOF and then on top of all that try to direct the model. Anyway we are still friends and will try again if a suitable topic crops up. Next time I will have a much better idea of what I am doing.

Just catching up here.

Magical: love this one nice vibrant colour with the rainbow just in the right position with a good foreground interest with a little light too.

Vice: I think I will have to go with no2 here as the bottle is the vice and that’s the focus point but I do find the leg a bit annoying thou,

No1 is the better shot but the wrong point of focus.

My "Entrance" submission photo is a couple of posts above.

It is of the bridge over the Thames at Marlow.
It is kind of the entrance to the town, as can be better seen in the shot below which I have included just for background info.
I knew I wanted to try and shoot this scene, and I knew it would need early morning light.
So when the forecast for today was for a clear night and a bright and frosty morning, there was no excuse for lying in bed...

Nothing to do with entrance, but the pic below was a bonus shot for me as I walked back over the bridge.
Thought I would share...

Title is "Two ducks"

Your entrance shot is for me disadvantaged by the metalwork this side of the bridge pillar. It should be a nice lead-in to the bridge but IMO it's too obtrusive - I would love to see what could be acheived by using the entrance as a frame.
Your 2nd looks a bit dark on my screen but has all the potential of being a really cracking image ... maybe crop the bottom up to the post line and add some fill light ... I would give it some time in Photoshop to bring a bit more out of it.

Gramps, thanks for the kind words about 'Two ducks'. But that was just a gratuitous posting really. Just wanted to share.

I think your comments regarding my 'entrance' refer to my info shot not the actual submission - which is post 265?? I have tried to clarify the info post.

Good shot and bang on theme, I like the framing and use of the depth of field to lead the eye straight into the frame, I don't know though if it could have been even better with someone in the frame about to go through the entrance though? Or even a car driving into it?

Hi Mike. I like the composition of number one with the eye being led through the bridge by the steel work.

I like the lighting and lovely blue sky in number two but not sure of the composition! Maybe a closer shot using the arch framing to lead you in with the church (whatever that building is) in a the back ground!

I love 'two little ducks' I clearly need to visit Marlow again sometime armed with my camera!!!

Thanks Paul. Actually I commented to my wife when looking at the photos, "If I had been a 'proper' photographer I would have waited for a cyclist to come over the bridge, but I don't have the patience." I have one shot from a different viewpoint with a cyclist and it definitely adds to it.

Hi Mike

of the 3 images posted for Entrance I much prefer your last one.....great framing to get both arch's in ( 2 entrance's for the price of one ! ) & fab symetry with the lights & railings....love it  Dunno why but I wanna see the bike going away from you................there's always one awkard so n so & it's usually me

Soft.....the teddie image ...like the blur through the windows , like his position & everyone knows teddies are soooo soft  Personnaly the cake doesn't add to it....maybe if it was in focus as well or not there at all

2nd Image......a selfie ? think it says soft but not really doing much for me...nothin wrong with it..... lighting , position , catch light in the eye all work well....maybe the cushion needs to look softer ?...or maybe use the teddie :)

Yup this entrance shot is the winner for me, like Lynne says the symmetry is excellent. It's a shame the council didn't think about photography when they stuck that traffic flow arrow on the left side of the bridge:bonk:

Soft - I agree with Lynne (again) about number one, I think it would look better without the cake in it. I love the lighting and the DOF:clap:

Yay for the selfie, but yes cuddling the teddy might look 'softer'! Did you take it yourself on a tripod or get someone else to shoot it? It's sharp throughout with nice catchlights in your eyes.

Lynne I suggested in Mandy's thread that we should maybe start a 52'ers selfie thread so we can 'see' who we're actually talking too! As there is a photo on there of Mandy and Nick (Blank_canvas) from when they met up!

Hello Mike,

I really like 'Entrance' (last edit) it works. Great composition and viewpoint.

'Soft' - The teddy shot lighting is sublime, I really like the way it falls on the fabric. The exposure is nicely balanced for the outside to so not only is it technically good its very pleasing. I think this would make a good stock image.

Soft 2 - Technically very good and can't fault it, definitely soft but it doesn't work for me, not sure why, it's just one of those when I'm not sure.

Fixed - If only it was so simple in real life!

Many thanks for all the comments.
I have revised my 'Entrance' and selected my 'Soft'.
Truth is the model's heart and soul wasn't really into cuddling a cushion - so the bear wins.
