hi all
I have been using sony dsc-h1x which has 20x zoom, I also have a sony a200 with voitlander 70mm-300mm f5.6 the pics from this camera have at zoom got too much noise to remove in pp, I can pan and follow birds in flight especially buzzards that we have watched breed and grow over the past 4 years and the many deer around us ,my problem is they are just out of reach of the point and shoot and the a200, I have lost so many shots due to the camera focus hunting on the a200 and the point and shoot gets the pic but again too grainy, so I am getting my next set-up, looking at canon 7d with canon L lens, but I need pointed to the right set up for birds in flight and distance of about a football field, I also take a lot of the dogs on their walks, so am I looking at the right camera first of all, i should have in the region of £2-2.5 thousand but for this it must be spot on to justify the money as I will not have this kind of money again, image quality is something of a distant dream for us as I have very few pics that I can be proud of, some of the work on this forum is astounding, i am setting up a flickr account and will post some of my better pics for any comments,
so equipment ?? body/ lens I am just learning about iso speed apertures etc
thanks
john

A lot of people recommend the 400mm for bird photography. There are two versions, but the 2.8 is probably out of reach of most people's pocket.

, I also have a sony a200 with voitlander 70mm-300mm f5.6

That lens isn't listed on the dyxum lens database, which has pretty much every alpha mount lens ever produced, so it must be an unusual one.

FWIW the A2xx/A3xx are very much entry level models and have AF performance to match ;).

sorry it is voigtlander telomar 100-300mm vmv macro 1:5.6-6.7 lens i guessed the last post,

jimi, i had a converter 1,7 i think it was on the dsc h5 which was good but it stopped you from close up images as you had to select telefoto from a menu, so i didnt bother with the hx1 camera, I do like the hx1 it is a good all rounder, but i want better shots now,
been looking at cameras, 7d but what about the 1d or 5d which are the best for wildlife, will be looking at a good lens to go with it, so many suttle differences only an owner will know the downfalls of each model

With that kind of budget you should be ok :) If you wanted to stay with sony then an A580 with the sony g glass 70-400mm would be pretty good or the sigma 50-500. Otherwise Canon 7d but with a decent stabilised long lens you'd probably blow your budget.... 7d seems to have the fastest AF and being a crop body you get better reach. I think the 5d and 1d are both FF. Not sure though.

That voigtlander lens is pretty slow. Try your a200 with a longer sony or any of the sigma long primes. The latter might be the best route for long reach as you should still be able to add a teleconverter and have AF. If you're always at 300mm then a longer prime might suit as you can always crop and it would be better quality than a zoom going up to that range.

Im not going to waste any more money on the sony, I want to get a better set-up and then learn on that, it is so difficult to know which way to go, I wont have this amount of cash available for set-up again so I have to get it right this time hence my dilema, I am pretty set on 7d camera body, unless anyone knows a better choice at that money, and am looking at 70-200 is L USM mk2 with 2x conv or 28-300 f3.5 usm L I dont know yet, I just need to get all rounders but IQ is important as I havent had much at zoom up to now, I put a link to my flickr all were taken with sony HX1 or sony a200 with zoom but I cannot tell which is which but the IQ speaks for itself, not good

Against the 7d there's only really the Nikon d7000 in your budget. You could go the D700 route but getting glass fast enough and long enough would probably blow the budget again.

I'd only get the shorter canon lens if you can still have AF with a 2x. Otherwise the longer one will be better and you might be able to stick on a 1.4 teleconverter and have AF and go even longer.
