About bloody time!!!

According to the BBC "Motorway tailgaters and middle-lane hoggers are to face quick justice with on-the-spot penalties under new measures announced by the government."

Middle lane hogging has got to be one of the most annoying and selfish things going! It's about time someone cracked down on it.

Now if only they'd address wearing socks with sandals.
 
hmmmm this could effect me if i'm not careful. I do like a middle lane during a long journey.

It sounds OK and I have no time for middle lane hoggers or people using non handsfree mobiles whilst driving either.

But at what point do the police become judge, jury and executioner? That's what courts are for.

The punishment will be limited to a fine. No talk about killing the guilty ones yet.

Are you serious? Or just lucky enough to not do that many miles?

I hate MLM and think this couldn't come soon enough.
 
what about fast lane hoggers are they to be fined also or is it only the middle lane?
 
I guess you'll be fined for hogging that one too!
 
It's about time this happened, I think most middle lane hoggers lack the confidence to drive at speed in other lanes, possibly because they're closer to crash barriers and trees. Maybe they like the comfort zone of having an extra lane each side of them incase of errors. Or they just dont understand how the lane system works.

If they don't have the confidence to drive at speed, or dont understand how the lanes should be used, they should not be on the motorway at all.

No different to a speeding ticket; you can accept it or if you wish challenge in court. If a person accepts their guilt why take the matter to court?

as a self confessed middle lane hogger. I can confirm it's none of the above

It's simply laziness. :shrug:

nothing more, nothing less. If I'm not feeling lazy then I'll quite happily drive at speed and change lanes and go close to crash barriers and trees etc.

They don't, they issue a fixed penalty, it's not a conviction!

Do you not know what a fixed penalty is? The whole point is to keep minor offences OUT of the court system so the courts are free to deal with more serious offences. Due process still applies.

Surely laziness is the worst one of all, if you're too lazy to check your mirrors, indicate, look over your shoulder and turn the steering wheel a few degrees to one side then what else are you too lazy to do in a 1 ton+ high speed wrecking ball? :shake:

That's the prime definition of inconsiderate driving, and this is what the new fixed penalties are for.

There's no excuse for using an overtaking lane (which is what lane 2 is) if you aren't actually overtaking anything.

Laziness is just a 'cool' way of saying "I'm better than you and normal rules dont apply to me"

Start of a slippery slope isnt it, first middle lane hoggers fined, then fast lane hoggers, when we're all on the inside lane, we'll be fined for hogging that as well.

I hate lane hoggers, it is dangerous and bad driving. However, in the real world will this be enforced properly. Many people still use phones, and speed?

Also, we all lane hog at times, while I hate those that do, and 99% of the time will be in the right lane, there are occasions when you may lose full concentration for a minute. Another tax???

But anything to stop the idiots trundling along in the middle or third lane is a good idea.

Hang on, you say you hate lane hogging, saying its bad and dangerous yet criticise the powers that be for trying to enforce it, suggesting its a tax?

But police can only do so much.
 
I think the fines should be much higher so they're an actual deterrence rather than a nuisance. A £60 is annoying but not a huge game changer to most, £500 on the other hand...

I think I was told the fine for speeding in california was $500+ depending on your speed. Similar fines for no seat belt or using your phone.

That way you don't need a shed load of officers to enforce minor fines, just the worry of getting such a large fine should deter most.
 
don't worry i won't defend middle lane hogging at all. I realise it's not considerate driving, im just admitting that I find myself doing it at times and it's purely down to laziness. It's so easy to just stay in one lane.

I guess this new law will make me a better driver though and stop being lazy
 
A fine relative to your income would make more sense although prob a nightmare for administration. Some millionaire knob head in his audi R2 on the phone prob find £500 a mere inconvenience.

What is middle lane hogging? Is it driving slowly in the middle lane or just purely staying in the middle lane?

I tend to drive mainly in the middle lane as the left lane is normally packed with lorries doing 50mph. I'd be more than happy driving in the left lane if it was clear to drive normally in.

Finland does that, the head of Nokia was fined €116,000 (around £70,000 at the time) for doing 75kph (46mph) on his motorcycle in a 50kph (31mph) zone.
