Yes
I've been doing some photo work for my employers these past few weeks, just a few 'mug shots' of management and the like. While I've been walking round the place with my tripod and bag of tricks in tow, I have lost count of the amount of times people have called out something like, 'watch out, here comes David Bailey'.

Is David Bailey the only photographer the average Joe knows of? It would seem that way.

Me? :p

There is the old "who do you think you are...David Bailey?" So I guess you are probably right!

There must be Lord Lichfield too. All those Pirelli calendars must have left their mark.

That's what I always get the David Bailey line

Yep, definitely Bailey but I bet most people couldn't name the models that made him famous.

Snowdon?

a couple of other british photographers I know of are Bert Hardy and Nigel Barker, but Bailey Lichfield and Snowdon always come to mind.
Also there is a young portrait photographer that I cannot for the life of me remember his name, tis driving me mad, photographed many a famous person.... any one got any clues?

people often think im Joe Cornish, He nicked my style dont you know..:bang:

Untill they see my pictures!! hahaha.. :gag:

Rankin?

Marie Helvin was my favourite and strange as it is, she has just done a shoot with Rankin.

She still looks absolutely gorgeous.

Gary Whittle ?

Seems to get more newsapaper coverage than most :D

Bob Carlos Clarke for me.

Ok I know he was Irish but one heck of a tog.

My fave quote is from Bailey though. When speaking at a photographic event someone asked him what lighting he used, expecting some recommendation for a mightily expensive product that would instantly transform his images.

"Available light" replied Bailey.

What? the poor chap replied on not getting the answer he expected.

"I mean any bloody light that's available!"

Classic.

Weird...

So I buy a 150mm Mamiya 6 lens from a John Angerson via ebay a good 18 months ago, said he was a pro tog but that information was filed somewhere around my left ear.
Anyway, I remember names, today I was picking up my negs from a lab in Leeds and they've been putting up some of the printwork they do in and around the work area and reception, in the corner was a fabulous 20x20 b/w head portrait of a tramp, a gallery print credited to......John Angerson....

so I looked him up

The guy is from Bristol, he lives in London, what's he doing shooting places where the homeless have sleptin Leeds, let alone leaving beautastic portraits lying about in random processing labs.

There are a lot of great Brit photographers about, so many that we can't keep up with their work unless we made it a full time job, its not surprising jo public don't know any but the most famous of photographers.
Couldn't find the portrait btw

So I guess then that we 'togs' can name many other photographers, I particualrly like the work from my name sake, Geoff Simpson (I have nothing to do with him, except for bumping into him one cold March day at the top of Stanage Edge in Derbyshire), it would seem that David Bailey IS the only name that the majority of people would mention if asked in the street for a famous photographers name.

Suppose its on of those ingrained British things, bit like you cant wash your car outside without some idiot passerby saying "oh, do you want to do mine next?".

David Bailey would be by far the most famous to the non togger, but with a TV snippet on channel 4 (I think) Rankin could be up there with the younger generation soon.

Going back to the OP's question. I think for non Togs David Bailey is a name most know due to his popularity in the 80's and 90's with his Olympus adds

David Bailey - Bathe It Daily (slang)

And yes the "Here comes David Bailey" or "Who do you think you are David Bailey" are commonly used by people as reference to amateur togs..

Surely the most published photographer and the most viewed is/was Beverley Goodway of Page 3 fame.

I still get the David Bailey comment from time to time

I never get one referring to Snowdon, Cornish, Adams, et al

You'd have to say getting him to do those Oly adds was a stroke of genius marketing then wouldn't you?

DD

John Hedgecoe for me... but only cos Im name-dropping as I used to be friends with his son!

To tell the truth the name that always springs to mind is David Bailey.

What about dear old Bryan Adams - was on one show last night and gave a little mention to his photography inbetween pushing his new album.

Yes... he has photographed the Queen! Not the group.. the real thing! :D

Remember that most non Togs would have no idea about Cartier Bresson,Adams,Saldago,Muybridge etc etc.Bailey is famous because of the Olympus adverts and his women,Lichfield because of his royal connections but as far as most other great photographers go to the average compact user in the street there are no other famous photographers

I get the David Bailey thing too, although it's only now that I've put his name into wikipedia.

Being more into landscapes the photographers I'd heard of before starting to read books/websites I'd heard of Ansel Adams and David Noton (mainly because my parents have one of his prints on the wall at home)

Suppose its on of those ingrained British things, bit like you cant wash your car outside without some idiot passerby saying "oh, do you want to do mine next?".

Spot on

and yep i always get the David Bailey thing to

I get the David Bailey thing too

Davina Bailey is what I get!

I am sure if you did a survey of photographers and joe public, who was the most famous British photographer they could think of David Bailey would come up tops.

I was suprised about Bryan Adams when he turned up in a magazine article recently. Really nice B&W work.

How about Adam Woodyatt (Ian Beale)
