Most famous photographer in the UK?

Yep, definitely Bailey but I bet most people couldn't name the models that made him famous.
His ex wife....Marie Helvin.
I remember seeing a picture of her wrapped in newspaper, taken from one of his books.

Who was the sports 'togger who went on to picture ed on one of the Sundays?
I'm sure it was Eamon ????

yes i get this in work also when talking to one of my friends about photography.

"Eh up its the baileys"

I like Brett Harkness stuff too. Technically he's really good but his composition intrigues me. It's very loose and fluid, breaks all the rules but somehow works.

I saw a photo of Graham Le Saux on the BBC Football website last week 'togging at Chelsea vs Burnley...

Eammon Mccabe changed sport as he made photographers think about the human side of sport and capture dejection as well as delight. He is superb.

John French did all the stuff David Bailey did 10 years prior - Bailey was his young assistant and took a lot of what French did with him.

Pete Carr is a tidy HDR photographer to be fair. One of the best out there.

Dave Rodgers is a Getty old boy and is a great rugby photographer and still the go to guy for top spec Rugby.

Gary Bray is an ex fleet street snapper who has inspired me and taught me a lot over the years though an unkown jobber really.

And in perspective still very new to the game...

Yeah, only eight years running their own business, just kids really:D

Seriously though, the thing that I like about Brett is his fluidity. He shoots Weddings, but only 20 a year. He shoots travel because it inspires him and he sells that too, he shoots architecture and won top UK tog this year for that.

How many togs do you know who call pull off top wedding tog, top class travel tog and prize winning architectural tog?

Yes he's not had 20 years in the industry but for someone who came from taking pics on a cruise ship, the boy aint half done bad!

Yeah I concur, but compared to the listings he is newish if you catch my drift. To be fair too he has had a lot of magazine exposure which all working photographers must crave. Luck is on his side, but chance favours the prepared and yep, he is good at what he does.

Anyone heard of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe? Quite like his work as I know Whitby pretty well.
IIRC he used to write for Amateur Photographer magazine when he was alive.

Lets not forget Patrick Lichfield

In terms of the average joe I think you are right it is very limited to Bavid Baily and Lord Litchfield, but that's only to be expected these guys were the big names in the 70's and 80's.

However, for me there is only 1 man who has my ultimate respect when it comes to photography and that is William Henry Fox Talbot an English gentleman who ultimately invented the negative / positive process photography and without him Adams, Bresson, Litchfield, Bailey et al would have been stumped.

The one that usually gets forgotten from that period is Terry Donovan and he was probably top of the "pack".
Pete.
